Piloting (Space) skill and Space Combat question

By Ehedei, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi,

In page 116 Piloting (Space) skill's description:

During a space conflict, pilots may often jockey for position to determine which shields face the enemy and which weapons may be brought to bear. When opponents attemp to negate these efforts, the winner is identified through an opposed Piloting (Space) check.

How does this work in combat? What kind of action is? Is this action the same as the Gain the Advantage action?

Thanks.

Gain the Advantage was my thought, too. But I thought that was against a set difficulty?

It's not GtA, but it's a related thing.

GtA is an action against a set difficulty+modifiers based on the target's speed. It's restricted to ships Sil1-4 and with a Speed of 4 or more. Success ignore Evasive Maneuvers, and allows you to pick the defensive zone you want your shots to land in. Additionally out-GtAing each other is possible with ever increasing difficulties, ensuring that eventually one pilot will be able to maintain the advantage.

The opposed check thing on Pg 116 is opposed+modifiers, so the difficulty for this action will usually be higher, at least to start. There are no restrictions though, so craft Sil 5+ and/or Speed 3 or less can take this action (with GM approval as with all things). The only benefit you get is for landing shots in the zone of your choice (though the GM can also apply other benefits like what the enemy can use to shot back with, ect. That's what advantages are for.) so you don't get to ignore evasive maneuvers like with GtA. Additionally there's no option to out-oppose each other like with GtA, the difficulty will always be opposed+modifiers.

Edit: Also since this isn't GtA, if another craft has GedtA on you, you can't use this to cancel that out.

Make sense now?

On a recent Order 66, I think they clarified that it's basically just referring to the Gain the Advantage action.

But that if you wanted to use it in other circumstances, that's your prerogative as well.

I'm behind on O66s so that's possible... If that is the case then that's kinda strange...

Thanks

Looking for more information I found this in Destiny and Force beta:

In page 84 Piloting (Space) skill's description:

During a space conflict, pilots may jockey for position to determine which shields face the enemy and which weapons may be brought to bear. When opponents attempt to negate these efforts and the ships are too large, slow, or cumbersome to benefit from certain specific vehicle maneuvers or actions, the winner can be determined via an opposed Piloting (Space) check.

The description is clearer now. I think.
P.S: I know is a different game and a beta, but is the same system.

OK, I feel really dumb for not remembering that...

See my post at http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/124793-home-rule-action-for-space-combat-pilot-only/#entry1300107. There’s a lot of stuff going on for space combat, and the most important bits are really the maneuvers that the pilot would be doing — they’re the setup for everything else that is done on the ship.

BeasturR also has a really good post at http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/124928-space-combat-cheat-sheet-with-modified-speed-effects/#entry1300585 where he lays out all the space combat rules in a tight and well-organized PDF file.
