The warrior's knife

By Alenikov, in Talisman

Apologies if this is common knowledge, I did search...

I've had the game for a few weeks and was taking a look at the warrior miniature after packing up after a game. It's always looked a bit odd to me. I realise the guy is supposed to be in a dynamic fighting posture, but there's something about his expression, the pose, the way it looks like he's trying to stab himself in the stomach with that knife. To me it looks more like he's having a medical episode than fighting off bad guys... but anyway. I compared it to the artwork on the character card, which looks more normal, but there's still something odd, the knife looks kind of twisted... errrr... hang on... he's not holding a knife. What I thought was a knife blade is actually a belt, and the hilt is actually the top of his scabbard.

Maybe it's just me and the person who did the miniature that got this wrong, but it's a great optical illusion. That plus his ability to use two weapons means it just makes sense that he should have two weapons in the artwork - but he doesn't!

Well, I found it entertaining...

YES!!!!

I've thought about writing about this a bunch of times but never got around to it. When you look close at the drawing you see that hes not holding a knife ..he's holding (?) his belt!

I'm guessing things turned out wrong when the art was drawn/edited.

Amazing catch. Well done!

Never noticed this.... :o

HA! funny.

I've noticed this myself for a while now. I, too, thought that he was holding a knife when I first saw the illustration, but then I realised that he didn't, and it bugs me that the one who sculpted the miniature didn't realise this too. Or perhaps they did, but they thought that it would be better to illustrate his ability to "dual wield" by making him hold a dagger.

I'm guessing the art ends up in photoshop sooner or later. In PS adjustments and parts of an image are often handled in "layers", I speculate that the left arm layer was accidentally left under the torso layer..

And yeah, apparently I couldn't hold myself from eventually posting about it but it was at bgg.

I always thought the pose comes from blocking rather than attacking. We've discussed this in our gaming group as well and can't add much to the this discussion apart from another observation. The warrior miniature and other chars, like the assassin, are posing with knives which doesn't exist in the base game at all. That's another 'why' question we've been asking ourselves.

It was a mistake on the part of the sculpter, but it looked cool so was left. The original art was just for cardboard standees in the Black Industries edition, and then FFG had sculpts made from the art.
