Proton Rockets

By Rividius, in X-Wing

I was thinking about the new proton rockets and TIE Bombers recently.

Major Rhymer with stealth device, VI and 2x Proton rockets comes out at 36 points.

That's 2x 5 dice attacks at range 1-2 until you get hit, and it doesn't break the bank.

Obviously he needs some support, ideally a way to get target locks or just a second action because he's not taking munitions failsafe. Maybe Lone Wolf would be better than VI.

But in principle is it workable?

Um, bombers are only agility 2 so you only get 4 dice on each attack. Since this is only a gain of a single dice if you manage a range 1 shot i'd say no probably not

Very interesting idea! I think the thread needs a more telling title than just Proton Rockets.

I think this would definitely be viable if there was a Biggs for imperials. He's unfortunately a bit of a glass cannon, and is still easy to hit even with 3 evade dice. The enemy definitely has to shoot him first however, so he can take the pressure off some other glass cannon friends. Just an idea.

He was putting stealth device on them to bump the agility to 3.

uhh. not worth it.

i see that, but the chances of you getting to range one without taking a hit are really quite low i'd say.

There is a Shuttle that works similar to Biggs, but it's only target locks.. so.. similar, but not exactly.. but an interesting option. add a couple more bombers for your swarm .. it could be fun.

Maybe.. but getting it at range 2 is nice, also, depending on the opponent, he might have initiative and get first shot.

There are possibilities, but probably not a tourney list. Would ahve to see it over time to see if it could do some damage.

been looking at bombers a lot lately now you have made me thin of this

That's why I put VI on him initially. You can reasonably get into range 2 and fire first with a high PS ship.

It's definitely a weakness but let's look at Advanced Proton torpedoes as a substitute. Cost is the same as 1 PR + the stealth field, requires a TL that you spend to fire it, is a 5 dice attack, same range and flips 3 blanks to eyes. To get the most out of it you need a TL and a focus or those eyes may as well be misses.

The PR, only requires a focus and it doesn't force you to spend it. I think it's the better option.

Like I said, he needs support, and if it gets people thinking of new and interesting lists, that can only be good. :)

I thought it was based on your original agility, so stealth device wouldn't increase the proton rocket roll?

Nope; it's just your Agility, with a cap at 3. Stealth Device increases the number of dice you get, and so does the Countermeasures modification that comes with the YT-2400.

Stealth Device increases your agility VALUE temporarily, so it would give you the extra die from Proton Rockets until your were hot by a attack. Similar to Hull Upgrade, which increases your Hull Value, which can make you immune to the stress from Flechette Torpedoes if you increase it past four.

The only thing that you can use as a sort of Biggs could be lambda's Kagi. That only would work against rebels...

What about a ship with draw thier fire? If the only hit left is a crit it could take it to let you keep stealth device right?

I am not a fan personally, but Rhymer would be the one to pull this off as he extends the R1 to R1-2. The Tie Adv is a better Procket delivery system and is more useful after the ordnance has been fired.

Negative, when DTF redirects the crit, it does NOT redirect the attack, even if the defender suffers no damage, because for DTF to activate, the defender has already been hit by the attack.

Something like this is a lot of fun though:

ALL THE ROCKETS

Scimitar Squadron Pilot (16)
Proton Rockets (3)

If the enemy spreads their fire to damage each one, then that's gravy.

Just checked the card. Unfortuneate that it's worded that way.

I would try fit in Jendon with ST-321 and maybe Jonus with Draw their fire to soak up crits for him. Put a bomb or something on Jonus.

Bombers with proton rockets, stealth device and ability to fire at range 1-2. A very interesting idea! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming!!!
