Increasing stat values

By Uvatha, in Talisman Rules Questions

Interesting thing came up today, when a player gains a +1 to their Fate Value or +1 to their Life Value do they gain a Fate-Life for the +1 increase.

That would mean if they lost the Value increase they would lose the extra 1 counter too right?

Now you never lose Destinies and thats ok, but some cards from woodlands are not Destinies and they add to your stat values. Is it just me or do players feel that your constantly trying to remember what value you have. I think +1 counters could be added to sit on a character card so players can quickly remember what value they have.

No, that's true for Strength and Craft, but not for fate and life.

It's only the printed value that gets increased, you don't take any counters. If you apply the change to your printed Strength or Craft, you obviously have the total Strength and Craft increased by 1 point (and higher values to use for Warhorse, Psionic Blast, Energise, etc); the same change to fate or life printed values only varies the maximum quota.

The maximum quotas (fate and life values) are only a reference for healing and fate replenishment, but you can always go above those values during the game. A change in the fate or life value doesn't mean you have to lose any fate or life counters.

I am glad you posted this, we had similar issues and much debate (in our game on Sunday). In the end we voted this:

Life and fate values increase starting value but you do not get the increased number until replenished or healed.

Strength and Craft immediately gain a bonus, and the value now allows the use in the Warhorse and other effects.

The loss of a Life value cannot kill a player, nor lose a life except when the lost value is greater than the starting value.

Can I have rule page numbers referring to this please.

Do you need a rule that states "when you increase your life or fate value, you don't take a counter"?

You aren't taking counters in any case, because it's just the printed value that's changing: Strength and Craft values increase your total Strength and Craft (because they are the total of printed value + counters + Str/Cft derived from Objects and Followers); life and fate values express the number of lives/fate you start the game with and the maximum life that can be healed or maximum fate that can be replenished. These are the rules that we have (page 4-7 of the rulebook).

You may ask for extra official clarifications if you need them, but not for rules that aren't required.

Aren't required :) . So in other words it doesn't say anything about it in the rules.. You know you could of just said that!

Personally I don't mind one way or the other it just came up in a game but i'm glad you don't gain fate or life through increase in their values.

Yeah, as the Warlock said, the Life/Fate value is pretty much just a reference for healing lives/replenishing fate, and are pretty much meaningless in any other situation, as the total amount of lives one has and fate one has is not bound to the values on the character card.
