Would the Vong make a good fourth faction?

By Torresse, in X-Wing

BUT the overal event or elements of it probably are.

Well lets see... The vong war takes place 25-29 ABY, and Episode 7 takes place around 30 years after Endor. We know enough about Eps 7 to assume the vong aren't part of it. We know Chewie is a alive as well. So best possible case, or worse depending on your pov, is the vong could be mentioned in passing. But given what we know about Eps 7 it seems more likely they're simply non-canon now.

If episode 7 doesn't mention them, or show any effects of them. Then those books are no longer canon in any way. Same for every clone and rebirth of Sidious that isn't mentioned, if he isn't the bad guy, and there's nothing mentioned about him. Or even more conclusively it's stated that the Battle of Endor was the end of him. All those books that featured him are no longer canon.

There's no way to handwave away the main bad guy actually being and staying dead.

Some characters may be be exceptions... Say for example Thrawn, even if he's not mentioned directly you could maybe make an argument he's still there somewhere. But for something like the Vong Invasion, if that's not directly mentioned someway, then it didn't happen, because that had too much of impact to leave no trace.

The Yuzon Vong made me stop reading EU material. Literally. One of them came into my house while I was reading a book with them in it, slapped it out of my hand. apologized for being such a pile of crap, and then shot himself in the head with a blaster pistol. It was weird.

Well you dont have to worry about that because elements you dont like from NJO maybe gone.

Everything you like has been made into 2ndary canon, its canon unless specifically contradicted. What it was kinda before was, "canon only if shown to be through other mediums."

So if its X-Wing you love or Scoundrels, or so on, you dont have to worry if its not refrenced in anything new because thats just how 2ndary canon works. Thats besides the fact one of the writters wrote "every thing in legends is still canon as long as its not contradicted and even then its only the fine detales that are not canon." Then you got another writter saying "they will add detales in new stories to hand wave/ keep there older stuff canon.

There is alot of major events that take place in the SW universe and they are hardly all refrenced in every other major story arc, so you shouldnt be concerned if something you like isnt refrenced. Even the movies dont refrence every major event in the other movies. Just something to think about when / if you get back to your older fav stuff.

Revanchist, I concur.

I LOVE the Vong race and their stories.

I would enjoy playing as their ships. Many people who play this game tend to hate ANYTHING that is EU because they deem themselves as "purists" or whatever but that is their prerogative.

I agree that there aren't enough ship types to make up an entire faction, on the scale that the two main ones are now BUT if they were introduced as a small faction for scenario or pick up play (EVEN dogfight tournament play, the players would just have fewer ships to choose from), I think they would work well. FFG does a good job of balancing out aspects of their game so I have faith they could make the ship cohesion to each other and a few other things just fine.

personal thoughts.

The Vong are stupid, and that has nothing to do with not liking the EU; I like the EU ships and am happy to see more of them. The problem is "bad guy X has super immune-to-everything power and needs to be defeated by the macguffin" is a storyline you shouldn't be using if you are over 12 years old. It's just bad, bad writing. Same reason the "suncrusher" is ridiculous.

Not that I'm disagreeing on the Sun Crusher, but: Bad guy Empire has a super immune-to-everything Death Star and has to be defeated by the Force.

It's like you haven't even seen the movies.

I have, don't worry.

Suncrusher, ugh....

Kevin J. Anderson has got to be one of the worst writers I have ever read. I wish old Ben could Mind Trick me into forgetting...

Definitely agree with you.
