Droid Player Character or Group NPC?

By briansz, in Game Masters

Recently, a player of mine decided the game was not for them. Fair enough, but, it leaves a big void where a healer character once was. I was thinking I would write her out of the story, and bring a medical droid in. Unfortunately, it creates a little dilemma.

I want to create a surgical droid as a player character (minus the obligation and backstory), but taking on the Colonist/Doctor tree really makes no sense. There is no need for certain skills like Charm, Deception, Negotiation, and Streetwise for a droid purely made for medical reasons.

Should I go about this another way, such as making it more of an NPC with certain skills, or create a custom career class for the droid with its own skills to choose from? Has anyone else had to this sort of issue? How did you resolve it?

Yeah just make it a "Nemesis"-level NPC. Give it the skills, talents, and other abilities that you need. Make sure it fills the void, but also that it doesn't take the spotlight away from the PCs. Make them appreciate and even need the NPC, and it can lead to some really rich roleplaying.

Better for you to have a tiny statblock than a huge character sheet.

Going with an NPC medical droid like the one from the AoR CRB and giving it a personality and a separate Strain threshold would do the trick, I think. Maybe give it one or two Mini-Meds from Far Horizons as support.

You don't want to overdo it too much, otherwise the PCs might come to rely on it for more than just patching them up.

The trick for a recurring NPC, IMO, is for them to have a recognizable niche.

An example I had from Saga Edition, that I thought I did really well, was a Yuzzem brawler named Dek. Dek did two things really well: he was strong, and he was the group's medic. Everyone else in the party was low Strength and had no medical expertise, but Dek (who was orphaned as a youngling and raised by pacifistic Ithorians) filled those rolls extremely well. He patched people up, lifted heavy stuff, and also subdued the occasional enemy with his massive grapple modifer :)

I was wondering if there was a listing for a medical droid in any of the books.

Not having any on hand is there such a listing because back in WEG I recall there was one I think based on the medical droid seen in ESB and with adversary cards due to be released would it be listed amoung them if it is in either book?

Look 3 posts up .

a) You could use the Medic tree from AOR.

b) My wife actually plays a 2-1B droid using the Colonist/Doctor spec. A droid could have a certain Charm to their personality, etc. However, as others have said, a small stat-block might suit you better.

c) Either way you go, don't make it too good at healing, unless you want the PCs to be reckless in combat.

There are a number of medical droids listed at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/adversaries/adversaries/ . You just have to decide which one you want to go with.

The Two-One-Bee droid at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/adversaries/adversary/1598/ is probably the most classic model, but there are also others. There is another variant of the Two-One-Bee at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/adversaries/adversary/805/ . And then a different model of medical droid at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/adversaries/adversary/1378/ .

And then there’s the mini medtech droid at http://swrpg.viluppo.net/adversaries/adversary/1465/ which could be used to assist some of the ones above.

I think I made the mistake of the group Astromech droid and creating him as a new character. instead i should have started the droid the one in the back of the CRB, but allow him to gain experience and talents as the game progresses just like the players.

But buying a droid allows for someone to "mind the ship" while the players go on the adventure. Also allows for some comedy relief.

Instead of the droid, I'd have gone with an Ithorian doctor -- a kind-hearted, idiosyncratic physician who likes to tell totally bizzare stories about life on the herd ships. When he sings in the refresher, the ship's hull turns into a didgeridoo. Also, a guy you'd never, ever let leave the ship in all but the friendlies ports o'call because that would be like letting a child wander into traffic...

I think you should go with the friendly nemesis route.

Have him be a small stat block and basically a piece of gear for the PCs. Don't give him XP but let the PCs buy upgrades for him.

Yeah XP is not really usable for an NPC. But it's okay IMO if he gets the occasional talent or skill ranks increase. It's good if NPCs grow, change, and adapt with your heroes. Makes them feel more real. Both good guys and bad guys :)
