I have a 36x36 playmat but my table is 32 wide. I have read that some people have used yard sticks to support the edges. Im woundering how many people have used and what spacing

Maybe go to the hardware store and get a 37x37 board - doesn't have to be real thick, just thick enough to provide support. When not using it store it somewhere outof the way.

This, just get an sheet of 3mm or 6mm board to cover your overhang. When not in use, store it behind a cupboard/bookcase/etc.
Like others have set, most hardware stores will sell sheets of 36"x36" hardboard. They are a material like wooden clipboards. They work great. You can even buy some 3M Hook and Look tabs to put on your mat and board to keep them from slipping.

This idea seriously just saved me from spending like $50 dollars I didnt have to. Thank you.
MDF or pressboard is what you want. If you are in the US, then I recommend Home Depot. Theirs always was a little sturdier than Lowes. It's about $5 or so for a section.
I've also seen someone cut his into slates that he put on the bottom of his mat. This way, he was able to roll it up for storage.
What I ended up doing was getting a 48x48 sheet of plywood and a couple pieces of 2x2's. I used the 2x2's to form a box on the bottom of the plywood so the card table fits inside it. I'm probably not describing it very well, but basically the plywood sits on top of the card table and the 2x2's go around the edge of the card table to keep it from moving around thereby making it very stable. I then wrapped the whole thing in black felt... the bottom felted to protect the top of the card table. This provides enough space for the 36x36 playmat and a spot right in front of each player for ship cards and space on the left and right for movement templates, damage deck, dice, and a drink.
When not in use, it takes up a little more space than a folded card table, but not a whole lot.
yup...spend $20 at Home Depot for a good solid sheet of 4 X 8 and have them cut it in half.

I did this, then cut it into 2 3'x3's, and 2 1'x3'. I just painted a star field onto the hardboard.
Now I can put it down on a table and have any of these sizes:
3x3
3x4
3x5
3x6
4x6
Which works out well for the Huge ship scenarios.
