Shae

By erccmmo, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Ok heres a pretty specific question for ya...

Shae's card says the following

Challenges: kneel to choose and kneel a character controlled by a player with more power than you

Does that mean during a challenge I can kneel her to kneel a character? or just during the challenges phase in general?

i.e. I declare attackers other guy with more power declares defenders... I kneel shae and kneel one of his defenders?

or does she need to be knelt BEFORE an actual challenge begins?

needless to say im confused any help is welcome!

Well, a couple of things here.

The bold word before an effect always refers to the phase the effect can be triggered in. So a "Challenges:" effect like Shae can be used any time during the Challenge phase, not just during a Challenge. For example, before any challenges are declared, you might want to use her to kneel out your opponent's best character (assuming he has more power than you).

You can also declare attackers against an opponent with more power, then use her to kneel one of his characters. Note, however, that you must do this before defenders are declared if you want that character to be unable to defend. In this game, there is no space between "I'm going to use these characters to defend" and "these characters knelt and defending" for you to do stuff and stop your opponent from using the indicated characters.

You can kneel her at either point before challenges, after you declare attackers, after he declares defenders, or in between challenges.

The thing is kneeling a character after he has already been declared as a defender is usually going to be pointless because kneeling him is part of the declaring him as a defender. The ability is best used prior to a character being declared as a defender so they are no longer eligble to defend. There are a couple of exceptions to this being the best time (such as using it to lockdown a character after it's last chance to auto stand for Vigilant or Vengeful, or in multiplayer when you want to mess with other people's ability to attack or defend) but they tend to be exceptions.

AAAH I see... thanks much!
