Using Upgrades

By Cupid Stunt, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can I choose not to use an upgrade?

For example: Enhanced Scopes. Can I choose to activate at my normal PS or at PS 0 each turn?

If the card says you "may" do something then you can choose. In the case of Enhanced Scopes you must allways use it's abillity, there is no may in there.

But be aware that some of the existing upgrades that were mandatory in the past, have been recently errataed to include the word "may", thus, making them optional. You can find such changes in the FAQ.

The last FAQ I can find was done in Jul '14 but as far as I know, Enhanced Scopes is a recent upgrade. The thought behind my reasoning is if Luke can turn off his Targeting Computer, why can't I turn off my Enhanced Scopes?

Luke does not 'turn off' his targeting computer. For his action you may choose to aquire a TL, focus, or pass your action. Enhanced Scopes states that you treat your pilot ability as 'zero' during the activation phase.

Try not to use fluff reasoning to justify game reasoning, because the two don't gel well. The simple answer is if the card uses the word "may", it's optional, otherwise you're stuck with it.

Was talking about the Targeting Computer in the movie ;)

Yeah, I figured you were. There's a lot of fluff from the movies and books that just doesn't seem to make sense when it comes to the game. As an avid fan of the movies, I can pick holes in the rules that don't make sense, but at the end of the day, I'm an avid gamer, and it's the game that counts. I try not to look at a rule and think "but in the movie..." because it's just not relevant to the game. FFG have taken a little creative license here and there, but that's fine because the game still plays well. It's not like they put Han in an X-Wing. Or squeezed Chewie into an A-Wing.

If you take Enhanced Scopes, you will always be moving first. Doesn't mean you get to shoot last, though. That still depends on your pilot skill. The ability to move first can sometimes be extremely handy, so it's not entirely a bad thing.

Yeah, plays really well, but I believe that you can now squeeze Chewie into a B Wing now, thanks to the Rebel Aces set.

Didn't think Enhanced Scopes would be optional, but a man can wish :)

Actually, I've just checked Chewie's card and you can't :(

Why not?

B-Wing, E2, Chewie crew card.

Thought Chewie was a pilot, not crew. Didn't realise he could be both.

There is a separate Chewbacca crew card. You can however only field one Chewie (same goes for Han, Luke and Vader crew cards too)

You may have to shrink him down to the size of an Ewok first! ;)

There can be only one Lieutenant Kettch.

afaik, you can only have 1 of any named pilot.

Yes. But certain named pilots also have a crew upgrade card of the same name.

In the immortal words. There can be only one!

Rulebook page 19:

Unless a card ability uses the word “may” or has the “action:” or “attack:” headers, then the ability is mandatory and must be followed.

afaik, you can only have 1 of any named pilot.

To be more accurate, you can only have 1 unique character in your squad. It can be a pilot or a crew member. But they can't be in two places at the same time, so "there can be only one". Along with ship titles, we've got some Elite Pilot Talents that are unique also.

To be more accurate, you can only have 1 of a GIVEN unique character in your squad.

Fixed that. You can have more than 1 unique character, they just have to be DIFFERENT named characters.

I stand slightly corrected, sir. ;)

Uniques that have multiple cards are...

Han Pilot or Crew

Chewie Pilot or Crew

Lando Pilot or Crew

Vader Pilot or Crew

Luke Pilot or Crew

R2D2 Astromech or Crew

Dash Pilot or Crew

Ors Pilot or Crew

Kyle Pilot or Crew

Thats all I can think of.

If you look at Enhanced scopes it is almost (but not quite) like Advanced sensors, where as it is used in preventing your ships from getting blocked by academy/rookie pilots thus denying your action. Where as advanced sensors cost 3 (a moderate upgrade cost) enhanced scopes only cost 1 (a very cheap upgrade cost).

There are other things that separate it from Adv sensors and where it can be used better that the 3 point upgrade (ie Lambda Shuttle with Anti-Pursuit Lasers) however with the point cost being so low, forcing you to move first is part of the bargain you have made with that upgrade.

Leebo is a pilot and crew as well, I think.
