X-wing ships compared to modern aircraft.

By Flyingbrick, in X-Wing

The TIE-Advanced is a lot like the Stealth Fighter - an overpriced, underperforming next-generation ship with a missile slot.

What are you guys living in the 90's? This thread about modern aircraft.

A-Wing: F-16 Agile, fast but fragile interceptor and missile carrier.

Y-Wing: F-15 Tough, multi-role workhorse with both Fighter and Bomber capacity.

X-Wing: F/A-18 Carrier workhorse and mainstay of the Rebel Fleet.

B-Wing: This one's tough. F/A-18E Super Hornet fits the bill though, being a larger and more heavily armed X-Wing replacement.

Z-95: A-6 Intruder The Navy still flies this relic.

E-Wing: F-35 Multi-role advanced fighter which is absurdly overpriced and needs expensive upgrades to be useful.

TIE/LN - Chengdu J-7 If anyone could swarm aircraft, they'd swarm with these.

TIE/ADV - SU-27, aging 'advanced fighter' that was still a bit of a lemon

TIE/IN - MiG-29 All round superb interceptor and mainstay craft.

TIE/D SU-35 Advanced version of the Su-27, but expensive and rare.

TIE-Phantom - F-22 Raptor. Stealth capacity and so advanced that a single F-22 can destroy entire squadrons of lesser planes.

Just thought of this one but not sure if anything fits here for x-wing but what ship would you think the Harrier might compare too?

The problem with comparing to modern aircraft, is because SW cinematography is based off of WW2 dogfights, and the same goes for ships in SW, e.g. the Y-wing was based off of the SBD-Dauntless. But here goes my opinion on them.

Y-wing: A-10

Phantom: F-117 or any other stealth based fighter

X-wing: F-16

A-wing: F-15 or other air superiority fighter

B-wing: F-35 (meant to replace the A-10, but integration is gonna take a while)

Bomber: B-52

Shuttle: Learjet, or some other luxury transport

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Y-wing as an A-10 interesting but nice choice, to bad it doesn't have the vulcan cannon.

I wish we still had the A-10... :(

We do, it is in use until 2028.

I think they extended ther service life recently for the A-10 as mentioned just now until 2028. That thing proves that simple is better in certain scenarios. It is one of the best aircraft ,in my opinion from the cold war era.

I wouldn't consider most variations of the Gold Platted Sparrow spitter to be tough, the landing gear breaks so easily =] And as for the Zombie 22, the same can be said about and modern fighter, "that they can destroy entire squadrons of lesser planes."

My problem with the Zombie is that until recently maybe, is that its skin melts off in the rain, its internal components are not protected enough in that some of the wing supports can deteriorate, because of material issues the crews and pilots for the jet were passing out, they said it was a computer issue but that wouldn't cause the ground crew to have health issue too, it has to many moving parts I feel, the internal components were made by a third party and they unintentionally made parts that can not be interchangeable with other F-22s, lastly thrust vectoring isnt the end all be all feature a aircraft can have, it causes to much energy loss in my opinion, the F-22 has had the most losses in aircraft out of all current craft used in the United States Military. Also its computer couldn't handle having the h.m.t.s. integrated with it, it is also only effectively stealthed if it is heading towards you and even then if you got a radar guided real-time camera, like what was used on some F-14s, then even if your return looks like its the size of a little bird the camera at around 52 knots will see your locked onto a F-22.

As for the TIE Interceptor, IM gonna have to go with the F-14 D, arguable the greatest Air Superiority, Interceptor, multirole aircraft built. Although the proposed versions that NG wanted to make would have been even better like the ASF-14. Its still got the longest ranged radar for a aircraft, and it still has the most powerful and long ranged missiles used on a aircraft =] And ther Persians are just scarey because of all the new hardware they are being fitted with including a helmet mounted targeting systems.

The story boards were from WW2 films but what we see in the film is inspired by modern, mainly the use of targeting computers in dog fights and interceptions, although ROTJ is so fair the influenced by modern aircraft when it comes to actions and avionics.

Now I never heard the Y-Wing was based on a divebomber, that seems kinda strange to me since it would be more like a Avenger Torp Bomber, in my opinion. Did it say it was based on a dive-bomber in a documentary or a sw behind the scenes artical? Believe it or not the only dive bomber IM aware of in SW is the Scimitar bombers.

I would argue the F/A18 is more widely used than the F16 across different services. I would say:

Y wing - F4

B wing - F14

X wing - F/A18

A wing - F16

E wing - F22 or F35

Z95 - A10 (for size and age really)

And helicopters?! Now those things are just cool. H60 is a Yt1300, baby :).

I agree and disagree at the same time. While the Navy and Marine Corps both use the F/A-18 Hornet (and Super Hornet), the F-16 is much more ubiquitous, filling almost all roles in the Air Force, it's Reserve, and National Guard components. It is a solid performer filling both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles and is a much more common sight of the demonstrated power of the Air Force. It's direct replacement was supposed to be the F-35, which is garbage. So I kinda tweaked your list, even though yours is still accurate.

Y-wing - F-4E (it has guns though the payload is still important).

B-wing - A-10C (the massive firepower and payload dispense freedom with a BRRRT)

X-wing - F-16C/ F/A-18E (similar roles, performance, and ubiquity)

A-wing - F-22A ( high agility, over costed, superiority fighter)

E-wing - F-35 ( High cost, agility, and it's predecessor still will outperform it)

HWK-290 - E/A-6B ( tons of support functions, zero dogfighter skills)

Z-95 - F-5 ( cheap, efficient, and rarely gets the credit it deserves)

Of course all of this is just opinion, but I tried to match some fluff too.

Y-wing as an A-10 interesting but nice choice, to bad it doesn't have the vulcan cannon.

The USAF WANTS to retire the A-10...Congress has NOT approved that request, so the A-10 is still active in service.

I can't remember where I picked up that tidbit about the Y-wing, but I do remember hearing/reading that it was based on the SBD-Dauntless (which makes sense, both are bombers that still perform well against fighters, and both have turrets).

Actually the Y-Wing was conceived as a multi-role fighter during the Clone Wars (Cold War?), and it was the premier space superiority fighter then for a while. It's just slow compared to current gen but still packs a payload, i.e. Strike Eagle.

Say what you want about the landing gear it's the only fighter to land with a wing missing. It's one tough plane!

http://theaviationist.com/2014/09/15/f-15-lands-with-one-wing/

Have you ever played Echo vs X number of sub-PS 6/8 small ships? They can never touch you. I was thinking more of Red Flag 2007, where the F-22 scored 244-2 kills to deaths. That's what flying against an F-22 was like when it first came out (I'm sure the Phantom has its share maintenance and health issues.) Raptor OP USAF Nerf PLS

TIE Defender is F-22 Raptor?

Firespray is clearly the A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Ok sorry but for now i am necroing this thread for the new waves. lol

Mist Hunter: EA-6B

Ghost: B-17

Kihraxz: F-105?

Kihraxz interesting idea . Very possible.

Can't think of a modern correlation but...

YT-1300 - B-17 Flying Fortress. Tons of destructive power, large crew, vulnerable to concentrated fire, but usually took down several enemy fighters with its ability to fire in all directions and often still made it home after taking ridiculous amounts of damage.
