X-wing ships compared to modern aircraft.

By Flyingbrick, in X-Wing

Don't know if this has ever been talked about before here or not, but will toss it out for thought.

Was just wondering to what modern fighters worldwide would you equate to each of the ships in x-wing? Aka a-wing = f-16 or the y-wing = F-4 or so on.

The F-16 is really more in line with the X-wing, honestly. Not the A-Wing. Reason being, that multi-role mission profile and the fact that it's... Well, everywhere in the US Military. And I do mean everywhere.

I agree but was just using it as an example, but thank you for pointing this out. :)

Would you like to edit that?

I think more like WWII fighters. My reasoning is apart from their secondary weapons, the Proton torpedos, they fire fixed foward weapons at close range.

Not that it was back when it happened but the romantic/majestic air battles of WWII are more exiciting than the fire and forget over the horizon battles of today.

Hence why GL looked to WWII for the space battles for the fairy tale feel.
I don't think you'd get the same feeling from a X-Wing pilot staring at a screen clicking a button and a missile fires off into the distance taking out a target or said target dropping some kind of decoy device.

Having said that.....

TIE Bomber = Stuka

X-Wing = Spitfire

Y-Wing = Hurricane

TIE Fighter = ME 109

TIE Interceptor = ME 262

A-Wing = P51

B-Wing = IL2

Having dodged your original question here are my modern fighters

X-Wing = F/A 18C

Y-Wing = F4

B-Wing = F14

A-Wing = F16

TIE Fighter = Mig 21

TIE Interceptor = Su27

TIE Bomber = Su25

I did use the F-16 compared to the a-wing due to how in my own opinion they both were interceptors but if i am wrong please let me know.

Filthy Pierre maybe i should have changed my title, i do thing the ww2 comparison would very much be a better one.

Well I would say the Falcon is like a EB-52 Megafortress and the Outrider would be an EB-1 Vampire

Tie Bombers would be close to either regular B-52 Stratofortress lots of ordnance not a very good dogfighter and relatively unmaneuverable

F-15s would probably be the Interceptor/A-wings, Y-wings would be close to F-15E

oh my god i f*cked up

Gundog you could be right, i never really thought of the y-wing compared to the F-15 as opposed to the old F-4 phantoms but you may have a point.

I would be interested in what you all thought of maybe the tie defender, interceptor and phantoms.

One game yesterday had a B-Wing vs a TIE Interceptor and I compared it to an F-4 vs a MiG-29

If I had to label the ships...I would go as follows:

Y-Wing - A-10

X-Wing - F-15

A-Wing - F-106

B-Wing - F-4

Z-95 - F-5/Mirage III

E-Wing - F/A-18 or F-16

TIE/LN - MiG-21

TIE/SA - Su-24

TIE/IN - MiG-29

TIE/D - Su-27

TIE/Adv x1 - Tornado ADV/Mirage 2000

TIE Avenger - Rafale/Typhoon

TIE Phantom - F-22

Y-wing as an A-10 interesting but nice choice, to bad it doesn't have the vulcan cannon.

The Tie/Adv. i could see as Tornado ADV

Tie Phantom - F-22 nice one.

COUGH TIE ADVANCED NEEDS TO BE MULTIROLE. COUGH.

You know i have to agree the tie advanced does need some love. As a kid it was one of the ships i did own from the movies with the falcon and xwing so this does date me just a little. ;)

really, the problem is that it has no available customization. all it can do is add different missiles. what about something that could customize it further into a role.

its already good as a tanky cheap fighter. it fits in a spot that no other ship does. at the 21 point range. (though should be 17, would be great there too)

I do agree with you. I would like to think when they came up with the stats for this ship things would have developed to a point where it would have been better at this point than it is. For now i see the Tie advanced as something of a black sheep squad ship.

But the TIEbomber also fills that role relatively nicely for 5points less

Shame the advanced long range abilities don't come into the game, that's it's main difference from the other TIEs having a hyperdrive.

I wasn't thinking of the Y-Wing as an A-10 because of the gun but because both have a variety of weapons that are pretty much dedicated to destroying stuff...and they can both take on enemy fighters in a pinch, but it is not their forte. And both are pretty hardy vehicles.

F-15: X-Wing

F-14: Y-Wing

A-4: A-Wing

A-10: B-Wing

F-111: HWK-290

F-16: E-Wing

F-5: Z-95

I'll do Imperials/Russians later.

If anything the Z-95 Headhunter would be the Vietnam era F-4 phantom and the Tie/ln Tie Fighter would be Mig-17 Fresco.

The original payload for F-4s were all A2A missiles as top oficials in the pentagon thought due to the speed of jets guns were obsolete when compared to A2A missiles. The Mig-17 on the other hand had no missiles and their only armaments were their three 23mm cannon. (sounds allot like Headhunter vs Tie Fighter aka missiles vs guns)

However NVA aces learned that their slower fighters were more maneuverable and turned tighter than the F-4s and with that they can close in beyond the missile capabilities and engage them with guns.

It wasn't till later that NATO strategist realized that guns were still a viable weapon in fighter dogfights

The E-Wing is the F-35. Stupid advanced but for every advancement it has some awful problem.

Thanks Marienalver for your insite. You do good historical incite i haven't thought about.

The issue I have with making the Z-95 an F-4 is that F-4s have crap for agility, which was why I likened the Z-95 to the F-5, which was a much lighter and more agile craft, lightly armed, but decent in the right conditions.

I can see the TIE/LN as an older MiG-17/19 type fighter. Lightly armed, mass produced, agile, and in the right hands deadly.
