Skill Sliders: The Complete Reasoning Guide (or: why do raising one skills lowers the other, thematically)

By Guest, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Speed/Sneak: This is probably the easiest. You can't run and still be quiet and stealthy at the same time.

Speed/Evade: If you'll try to hide while running, you will most probably be unsuccessful.

Fight/Will: It's difficult to be convincing when you're aggresive.

Combat/Horror: If you want to damage a monster more effectively, you need to get closer to it. However, the closer you are, the more frightening the monster seems.

Lore/Luck: When you think deeply, it's easy to not pay attention to your surroundings and, if do try your best to pay attention to your surroundings, thinking clearly is hard.

Spell/Luck: It's difficult to concentrate on both spellcasting and your surroundings at the same time.

You are welcome to discuss with my reasonings. Agree? disagree?

This is pretty much the logic I use when justifying it to new players.

And Luck as awareness is new to me, but it does make sense in the encounters and gate cards it is used in.

Yeah, I pretty much always considered luck as awareness. Things like lantern, warning mirror etc.

Makes sense, I think

I disagree about fight/will. Sometimes being aggressive is a very good way to convince someone. Maybe look at it as the more agressive you are the less mentally relaxed you are likely to be. In other words, you are more able to focus or remain calm when you're not paying too much attention to shooting an elder thing in the eyes. Not everybody's Duncan Mclowed(SP?). :) Converse if you're all about fighting you're not going to as easily stay calm and cool against the monster's alien mind/form. Most people don't go 'zerk in a fight.

I never thought about Luck as being awareness. I just thought of it as literally how lucky you are. I justified this slider pairing by saying that the more knowledgeable one is about the Mythos, the less likely one tended to be ;)

I guess this is one way to think about it, but stuff like lantern, warning mirror and a lot of encounters makes it look like awareness.

True. So does the Listen skill.
