Under a Black Sun video/podcasts

By Gaiduku, in Game Masters

Hi all,

I'm completely new to RPGs and me and some friends thought we'd give this one ago - specifically the free Under a Black Sun free adventure.

I've read through most of it now and I have a decent understanding of what is going on but it seems to be written assuming some prior RPG experience. From what I gather the beginner boxes are much better for newbs like myself but I'd still quite like to give GMing the Under a Black Sun adventure a go.

I've had a quick scan of youtube and stuff looking for a video of podcast of someone running this adventure but to no avail. Do you more initiated folks know of such a recording? This would really help me plan my first GMing experience!

Thanks

I am not aware of any live play recordings of Under a Black Sun .

But if you're looking for live play examples from some really good GMs, the Order 66 Podcast did a live play game in their first couple episodes. And it's Black Sun-flavored. Chris is a great GM, so that might at least get you on the right track.

Also Potelbat YALP has some live recordings as well. Episodes 7-10 are the Age of Rebellion Beginner Game, and the current series (still running) is a sort of blend of EotE and AoR.

The Youtube user "Whycalibur" had a series of videos of his group playing EotE, with Under a Black Sun being featured in the later half.

EDIT: Now that I'm off my phone, I found a link to the first video and playlist .

Thanks for the help so far and I'll definitely listen to the stuff you've recommended.

I think, concerning Under a Black Sun, I'm just going to wing it and see what happens. I do have a couple of questions so far about running the adventure that didn't seem very clear from the rules.

1) Concerning the initial chase scene do you guys treat this basically as a combat encounter? It sorta seems like a combat encounter but obviously, because the characters are in an uncontrolled speeder they can't really move in the same way. Would you recommend treating it as a combat encounter just without the option for movement manoeuvres (until someone manages to regain control of the vehicle)

2) Is it a general rule of thumb that PCs spend advantages and the GM spends threat? The rules go into a lot of detail of how you can spend it in combat but not so much outside of combat. For example if they get a Triumph whilst taking control of the speeder in the first encounter who decides what this....means. Me (the GM) or the player who rolled the triumph?
