Scum and Villainy Podcast Episode 8

By Kelvan, in X-Wing

The best buddy for dash should be something that draws fire away from dash if possible

Hm, a bigger glass cannon? Rebels don't really have any right now. The X-wing is the biggest glass cannon for the Rebels.

I like Leebo + Wingman + Tactical Jammer + Gunner, because if you attack Dash through Leebo, he gets 3 defense dice. That's an indirect way of encouraging you to kill Leebo instead, it makes Dash slightly less of a glass cannon. In fact, I will have to run those numbers later. :)

doesn't have to be a glass cannon. But if the idea is to get Dash to late game getting them to shoot at something else early helps.

I want to fly 58pt Dash so badly but I can't give up 44 point Corran Horn. Corran Horn (35)Veteran Instincts (1)Fire-Control System (2)R7 Astromech (2)Engine Upgrade (4)Dash Rendar (36)Push the Limit (3)Heavy Laser Cannon (7)Nien Nunb (1)Engine Upgrade (4)Outrider (5)Total: 100View in Yet Another Squad Builder

I like that this setup gives both engine, lets one go Phantom Hunting at PS10, and Corran's dial is always wide open. Dash doesn't get the three actions, but Nien Nunb opens up his options a bit more as well. Of course, I've been stuck on this same Corran build for almost 4 months now, so it is hard to break away to PtL. I want Kyle, but there is not a single thing in this list I'd give up.

I've been stuck on ptl Corran for months. I have tried out VI quite a few times it just hasn't ever paid off.

Considering I had 3 hp left after our game I think it's fair to say that the game could have swung either way. You had an excellent early block on dash.

I definitely don't disagree, but I think that was my only block in what I thought would be a key strategy that would have seen more consistent use (huge credit to your flying, of course though). Though, it might be me needing to get used to facing Dash more often and playing the list I ran better.

EDIT: And great podcast by the way! Great to hear people coming up with creative solutions to the Wave 4 meta!

Sable and Theorist are excellent outside the box value seekers in lists.

I thought of an informal title for this episode:

"Herd Mentality"

It has a double meaning. ;)

Should I bee looking at a walking Mustache as my Buddy Cop for Horton?

Alternatives could include PTL over Predator and dropping Gunner to Kyle Katarn, switching to PTL and switchign flechette to Proton again.

I'm one of those people who doesn't know what he wants to run not because he has no ideas, but because he has too many. I can figure out a list on the fly, and usually do, but I have so many ideas that it can be tough to settle on one. Much to the annoyance of my opponents. :)

I ran chewie horton today. It performed well in a loss v dom. Considering we attempted to power test it vs echo and 5 ties I'm quite pleased. Not every loss means you should give up a list. I will say that pre planning appropriate flight lines is huge. Especially vs a swarm.

I ran the following list tonight 4 times:

Tarn Mison + R7

Ibtisam + Elusiveness + Sensor Jammer + E2 + C3P0

Horton Salm + R2D6 + VI + Ion Turret + Proton Torpedoes + Munitions Failsafe

I went 3-1.

First match was against Whisper + VI + ACD + FCS and 5 Academy TIEs. Horton crushed Whisper. His mini-swarm killed the blue fish lady, but Tarn hunted them all down.

Second match was against Fett + VI + Proton Bomb + Recon, Howlrunner, Backstabber, and an Academy. I was able to dispatch the TIEs, but at the cost of Horton, whose mustache shall forever be remembered. Tarn and Ibti then hunted down the elusive Fett, enticing him to drop his proton bomb harmlessly (though it was **** close to hitting Tarn).

Third match was against Han + Luke crew + Recon + Expert Handling + Falcon and Corran Horn + Marksmanship + FCS. This one Ibti went down quickly to excellent rolls. I got into a bad maneuvering situation and my opponent exploited it. I was able to force Han to fly off the board, but not before he took out Horton. With Tarn against Horn, both with 1 HP left, I was unable to withstand Horn to get a clean shot and Tarn went down.

Fourth match was against 2x Blue Squad + Advanced Sensors and Chewy + Gunner + Saboteur + VI. Chewy started on the wrong side of a line of asteroids, allowing me to engage the Blues with only distant shots from the magic carpet ride. Able to Ion the Blues and maul them before Chewy was able to get into the fight proper, I gained a large advantage. Tarn Mison went down under concentrated fire and Horton ended the game with 1 hull left (and 2 crits), though Ibti was largely untouched, before Chewy finally perished.

Horton was a blast, but I'm not happy with him in this list. He's too vulnerable, unable to boost. Honestly, I wish I had the points for Engine Upgrade, but dropping the Proton Torpedoes for that is probably the wrong call. Maybe dropping 3P0. I'll ponder it more. A fun list overall, but not one I would take to a tournament.

I'm gonna post my thoughts after I wake up tomorrow. But this list is on to something.

I will say engine and ion are cards I would never drop on Horton.

I lied...

I will say that you need to be much more careful with your flight lines to make sure Swarms do not get in front of you. I'm used to flying something close to this list with Dash and he escapes ties by flying through rocks.

Blast. It was pointed out my proposed list isn't Worlds legal. I forgot Lando came with the YT-2400 and not Rebel Aces. Back to the drawing board. :)

It's a shame that you can't make a viable Lando, Horton, Biggs list. Think of all the mustache power in that list.

I can't for worlds. Lando crew tho...

I like the part that they talk about it not just being Fat Han as the problem but also the fact that ships like Whisper/Echo sort of being the Fat Han bodyguard in tournament play because you can only build 1 (maybe 2) squadrons. If you build only for encountering the Fat Han, then Whisper will rip you a new one. If you build to counter Elite Tie-Phantom Chieftain, then when you finally meet Fat Han he will tear you to shreds. It is hard to build a squadron that can counter both the Superfalcon and unique Phantoms.

As many people said before there is no unbeatable squadrons (contrary to the strong beliefs of some OPs), it is just that the meta is dominated by 2 drastically different squadron anchors (aka power ship builds). One being the big tough ship that can take allot of damage negating 2 hits a turn and can shoot all directions, the other is a nimble slippery ship that can dance around your squadrons firing lanes and easily pick off ships one by one while agility dodging multiple hits with 4 or more defense dice.

I was interested to see some counter options using Bobba Fett. This might be one way to beat both fat han and phantom lists although u would likely have a harder matchup versus one of them depending what upgrades u went with... eg. gunner on BF is better vs Han but Rebel Captive is better vs phantom.

I expect to see more falcon than phantom. Boba has plenty of tools to keep phantom in arc

Exactly. The ships that counter one of the 2 anchors tend to do very poorly vs the other power ship.

Would you want any lists to counter them both? That would be awful. What you want is a list that has a shot at both. And I think we have quite a few of those.

I actually agree with you totally. That's the hope with the lists we created, to have a shot against both and be strong in general.

Finally finished podcast. On the subject of 3-greens being too fast. Depends on the new turret options. If there's a beefy turret that has an r3a2-style impact then 3-green becomes incredibly useful.
