How do you think this compares to Falcon builds?

By Duty Remains, in X-Wing

I'm not a fan of the "Fat Falcon" concept... too many eggs in one basket and even though I've run plenty of 3 ship lists in the past (but never a Falcon) I'm really starting to appreciate having at least 4 ships with 3 or more attack dice. So while fiddling with a joke build (don't ask) I happened to click past Eaden Vrill and apparently the fact that he's only 32 points and can potentially have a 3 dice turreted attack got stuck in the back of my skull. Yesterday it occurred to me that if you paired him with a PS3 or higher fighter with R3A2, he's almost assured to trigger his ability and so I wondered what else I could fit into a list. The following is the result.

Eaden Vrill -32pts

Tarn Mison (or a Red) w/ R3A2 -25pts

Rookie Pilot -21 pts

Blue Squadron Pilot -22pts

Total: 100pts

So what do you guys think? Does the fourth "3 attack ship" balance out the loss of all the bells and whistles in a conventional "big turret +2 more ships list"?

Looks fun, I'd say it's worth a shot. Just make sure you get really good at flying Tarn as it seems like he'll be stressed quite often.

I feel like Hobbie fits better with R3A2, but that doesn't fit well in the list does it.

You're right to get Hobbie, I'd have to downgrade one of the others to something with less bite, which undermines the point of the list.

Interestingly however if you don't mind losing out on actions you can use R3A2 while stressed, an act of desperation for sure. Last night I double-stressed Wes Janson to stress my opponents last ship (Tie Bomber) so that he couldn't K-turn and get a shot. It can pay off if you need it too and thankfully there's a lot of white on the X-wings dial, so while they won't get any tokens they will at least be reasonably mobile.

It is an intriguing list but it lacks in PS. One fix for that would be to change the Rookie to Airen Cracken with swarm tactics.

Switch Tarn for Hobbie.

I see what you are doing with the cheap ships. And I think the list will be okay, but you aren't really maximizing Eaden's ability. You only have one way to generate stress in your opponent. And it isn't that great.

I would just drop Eeden down to a Wild Spacer and give him Anti-Pursuit-Lasers. 1 dice vs a ship that doesn't get any agility is pretty good.

This is not really about build advice... but I guess you're answering my question indirectly.

...and I already explained why Hobbie is not in the list.

To be more specific this time, the point of the list is that in addition to the turreted primary, there are three fighters with three attack dice. Without three other ships in addition to YT, I think I'd be better off dropping Vrill and building it with a Falcon or Outrider.

TLDR: the real question is how this compares to popular Falcon/Outrider lists, not how to improve the list because I'll probably never use it.

While he only has 1 way to force the generation of stress, he really makes the opponent second guess Push The Limit, K-Turns, and other stressful stuff. I'm excited to try him out more. I'd like to put something on him to make him more of a utility ship. I can say that leaving him without upgrades may make people avoid him till late game then you could pull some interesting maneuvers forcing them to K-Turn and give you the extra die. I see that having some power late game.

Here's a related build I came up with a while back.

Biggs

Hobbie + R3-A2

Eaden Vrill + Tactical Jammer

Prototype Pilot + Refit

Biggs gets 3 agility when he is behind Eaden.

Stressbot gives you 3 ships with 3 attack.

Prototype pilot to round it out to 100 points.

Played this one last night...

Hobbie + R3-A2

Jake Farrel + Lone Wolf + Veteran Instincts + Chaardan Refit + A-Wing Test Pilot

Eaden Vrill + Nien Nunb

Prototype Pilot + Chaardan Refit

Played against a decked out Soontir, Howlrunner, Carnor Jax, and two academy TIEs. Little mini swarm

I got initiative so I forced Soontir to move before Jake. He gets to fire first, but it was worth it in maneuverability. After a couple pot shots, I ended up with Hobbie at range 1 on Jax. He got him down to 1 hit ramaining and Eaden easily finished him off. My prototype went down quick and my opponent concentrated on Hobbie who didn't get another shot this game.

It was down to Jake and Eaden VS Howlrunner, Soontir, and 1 academy. I managed to land shots on soontir. Jake stripped his tokens and Eaden was able to crush him with a range 1 shot because you know he was stressed. The rest of the game was pretty simple. Stay out of arc and keep shooting at the TIEs. They got Eaden down to 1 hit remaining, but Jake never got a shot on him. He's a nimble bastard.

Note: Lone Wolf never came into play, but I imagine had he taken down Eaden and we had to go a few more rounds, Jake would have been just that much more powerful. It's like a late game insurance card.
