Double Talents?

By Sonofscathach, in Game Mechanics

I can see how some lightsaber dueling forms seem to run out of talents.

Soresu for example cannot make up its mind whether it wants to parry or reflect.

What do you think of the idea of double Talents such as Parry/Reflect which can be bought again at the same price to get the other version. This could work on the versions that allow a retaliation of the strike or shot. This does not have to be on every talent as that would be insane.

It could be a good way to emulate Djem So and other sub-lightsaber forms?

It is just a thought.

What do other people think?

Bad idea, and goes against the core tenet of the system that you can only purchase a talent once.

As for Soresu Defender, it's deliberately mixing Parry and Reflect, as does Niman Disciple, Ataru Striker, and Shien Expert, with only Makashi Duelist and Shii-Cho Knight focusing exclusively on Parry.

I've got to agree with Donovan, bad idea.

While I understand your sentiment that the form trees are littered with Reflect and Parries, I think trying to condense them all in this way does go against previous design principles.

That said the idea is novel, I think having just a single reflect or parry talent that you could buy multiples ranks of would greatly reduce the padding of parry and reflect across the specializations, but it would also kill the need to cross specialize. That's sorta a big deal.

And part of the balance, too.

And it would mean more coding changes in my character generator. I vote nay :)

Why not have an icon that consists of a circle with a number and a circular arrow to represent that it can be taken multiple times, and each subsequent time will cost an extra (as per the circled number) each time. So a 5 point talent with a cycle cost of +10 will cost 5,15,25,35,45,55,65 and so on.

These talents can then be hard capped within the talent description, maybe between 5 and 7 say, which is comparable to what can be made by getting the individual talent boxes off 2-3 specialisations.

because the talent trees are built the way they are on purpose. they are journeys in a lot of ways.
