Dice Frustrations

This thread has helped answer alot of my questions.. I think it's a must read for new players. I had a hard time understanding the dice system.

Again I say, destiny points are the cure for cold dice

The Group bounty hunter just got munched for 18 damage, and after he reduced the damage with his soak he was at his threashold. The bad guy a Cyber Nexu (tweaked to account for a party with some XP) was also at its threshold and it was going after the PC initiative that came up.

The bounty hunters pool was YYYGG and I offered a chance to upgrade. Cocky old sod offered up some smart comment about not needing it and then fired his gun. 5 Advantage and not one Success, with 5 advantage I offered that the Nexu had slipped on the slime in the Sa Nalaor decks and would forego its inititive slot to allow the players one more chance.

The only player that hadn't acted that turn however was the party face who had been seperated from our bounty hunter and had only found him by tracking the players screams. He was in a corridor on the deck below and only visible through a hole where the deck had collapsed.

Our face then pools up and quite rightly upgrades YYG, I then rule that firing as he was I would also spend a destiny and upgrade the purple dice to red. A Triumph, Success, 2 Failures and 4 Disadvantage. The poor guy falls over the hole and lands near the Nexu, the floor around both the nexu and our hero collapses and they both fall to the deck under that. Dazed the Nexu misses her turn again I allowed the Triump to kick in and allow the players another "hail mary".

At this point the party mechanic who usually just hides during combat and pings away with a hold out blaster picks up a bit of debris and clocks the nexu in the jaw.

Err... Make an Average Resilience check. DP to upgrade ability, but I'll flip a DP to upgrade the difficulty. Despair... well, we'll get to that... ;)

Use the OT and SW:R trope... (flip a light side pint) Blast the control panel... it either lets them 'Close the blast doors' or 'Open the blast doors'... I believe the Destiny Points can be used TO ADVANCE THE STORY???

They tried Mechanics, Skuldugery, Computers, and even ripping the door off its hinges. Every check was either average or hard and the players were rolling 3-5 dice each. The successes just wernt coming last night.

My favorite roll of the night was PPPYYYG. The three purples all came up blank. Great, right? Nope. The net result was 0 successes/failure and 5 advantages.

At least the problem was eventually solved by waiting for the person who lived there to come back so they could knock on the door and use social skills to gain entrance. And now we have a joke about how well secured doors on Rebel outposts are constructed.

Anyone else have stories for when the dice just wern't cooperating?

Dont put behind dice anything you need your PCs to get. Use the dice to get them extra stuff like trouble...

What a fascinating thread. Simultaneously filled with great advice for GMs and deep-in-the-weeds arguments over statistical probability.
