Jake Farrell and asteroids/Focus

By halfyank, in X-Wing Rules Questions

SO, today we had a brain scratcher

Through some misjudgment, Jake finishes his move on an asteroid.

No action, ok, we get that.

A friendly HAWK nearby is thinking of assigning Jake a Focus...

We ended up deciding that whilst he could receive the Focus, he couldn't Barrel roll or boost off.

Supporting this theory: no actions whilst on an asteroid

Also Boost Action Reference Card FAQ: - Last sentence should read:

"A ship cannot boost if this would cause its base to overlap with another ship's base or an obstacle token, or if the maneuver template overlaps an obstacle token"

Against: His wording says " After performing a focus action or assigned a focus token, you may perform a *FREE* boost or barrel roll action" - emphasis mine

FAQ: Q "If a ships is required to skips it's "Perform action step (for example, if it overlapped an obstacle), is it still allowed to perform free actions outside of the "Perform Action" step?

A: Yes

So... thoughts?

Yes, he can take the focus and then try to barrel roll or boost off. It's only the Perform Action step that he loses out on. The only restriction is if the maneuver template for the boost/barrel roll overlaps the obstacle, he still can't do it. If he's entirely on the asteroid, he's going to be stuck until next turn. He needs to be able to place the template so it doesn't overlap the obstacle, in order to make it off.

It depends on his position on the asteroid.

Overlapping an obstacle does not prevent ACTIONS, you skip your perform action STEP. You are still allowed to perform actions given to you by other sources, such as a special ability, squad leader, what have you. However, with the movement based actions there are additional conditions on whether the action can be performed. Specifically what you quoted, if the maneuver template or the ships final position overlap an obstacle the boost/roll can't happen. So if jake is positioned on the asteroid such that his left side is hanging off it and the template can be placed so that it doesn't touch the asteroid he can roll in that direction, but if he is placed so that the template has to overlap the asteroid on that side he can't, and the same for the other direction or boosting.

^^ both of these

Thanks!

Jake lands on the asteroid (grey shape indicated with red line) and skips his perform action step. Kyle comes along and gives him a focus. Jake skipped his perform action step but still can do free actions, like his boost or barrel roll pilot ability. The maneuver template that passes over the asteroid Jake would NOT be able to do (marked with the stress token) so a barrel roll left or right is his only options. The boost would be an overlap of the asteroid and thereby an illegal boost.

Jake lands on the asteroid and wants to know if he can boost or barrel roll after Kyle gives him a focus. In this version, the right side barrel roll would cause the template to overlap so a barrel roll on this side would be an illegal barrel roll. The forward boost and left side barrel roll would not have the template overlap so Jake could either boost forward or barrel roll left.

I keep seeing this kind of question popping up on this forum so I thought I would take the time to do more than the regular verbal representation.

^^ Sergovan nails it again!

Ok. Let's say that G. Dreis or A.Craken (or any skilled pilot with squad leader) give to Jake the focus and he do the barrel roll or the boost and get rid of the Asteroid. He could that way still attack in this round?
