Proton Rockets vs. Refit and PTL

By bubblepopmei, in X-Wing

I'll be bringing a Rebel Aces list to a tourney on Saturday with only a little party testing. I'm in it for fun though, so no biggy.

I really have fun with Jake and I'm wrestling with how to fit him and Kyle together along with two angry Bs for insurance.

Do you like Proton Rockets more or feel Jake needs Ptl more, if there could be only one?

Lists below are 100 points.

Push the limit + refit.

You pay 5 points for advanced rockets on A-wings.

Use the extra points for VI or outmaneuver aswell.

While I really like the Rocket on Jake, I feel it really is helped a lot by Push the Limit when you have the insurance of Target Lock. If you can't have PtL and the rocket, don't take the rocket. In this case, I think the second list is better, since you can also throw more Focus tokens around.

Haven't tried the rockets being in England but i'm leaning more towards refit and PTL.

I would say Jake with out maneuver instead of ptl, his focus boost combo is all three limit pushing you really need, without stress even! the out maneuver with focus is real going to help those flanker shots get through.

Not fitting the moldy crow title on Kyle so he can keep focuses from turn to turn?

Yes, agree with Forgottenlore also.

Kyle withouth moldy crowd is ussually a bad idea.

Think of it this way.

Turret blaster consumes 1 focus.

Kyle can pass 1 focus

You can use 1 focus to improve your shooting

That's 3 focus per turn. Recon only provides 2.

Either you shoot unmodified (at your own risk and peril, ussually, with really subpar results), or you don't use Kyle's ability, which well, then why are you getting Kyle in the first place.

Second list. The synergy between Kyle and jake is great. I'd go for outmanoeuvre ahead of VI and use the barrel roll or boost at the beginning of combat to reposition yourself out of the enemies arc. I'd also be tempted to fit Biggs in somehow to keep Kyle alive longer.

Outmaneuver is great, especially vs. Fat falcons. I agree about crow and recon but that means no ptl.

that looks like a good list

I just tested it and found it fun. I was up against 3 interceptors and a Phantom and didn't lose a ship. Jake did very well without ptl. I didn't always need Kyle to lend focus, either.

We shall see how it fares on Saturday.

I'll be honest, I was using Jake with Outmaneuver this weekend and I wasn't all that impressed, at least when he's going against another high agility ship. 1 and 2 agility ships are A-OK but 3 or more and it can be such a pain to get in damage.

Neither, honestly. Proton rockets without PTL means you're flying an a-wing without PTL, and a-wings depend on having access to multiple actions per turn to survive. And PTL without proton rockets means spending ~30 points on a 2-dice ship that can fly around and be elusive but is unlikely to do much damage. You really want both of them, PTL to meet the prerequisites to fly an a-wing at all, proton rockets to make it a viable threat that your opponent can't just ignore.
