I need your EU knowledge...

By Maelora, in General Discussion

On a more serious note, I need your collective wisdom as to who would make good NPCs for our alt campaign. I'm familiar with the movies (despite all the therapy I've had to make me forget the prequels), and many of the players are familiar with parts of the EU (and no, I'm not calling it 'Legends' any more than I call the original 'Star Wars' film 'A New Hope'...).

I'm honestly no great fan of the later EU stuff, though I really enjoyed the early WEG version. I particularly hated FU and Clone Wars, but I'm willing to consider characters from these sources if they can be transplanted to somewhere else.

I'm particularly looking for force-user characters, Jedi or Sith. In terms of timelines, anywhere about 20 years before or after the original movies would feel appropriate. Those with a more shades-of-grey morality would fit better, but I guess I could change that if needs be.

Assuming that Order 66 didn't happen, who would be head of the Order if Ben defected and Yoda retired? I'd assume Mace Windu, but would anyone else make sense? That's what the players are already expecting.

Light or dark side candidates are both fine; we treat the Force like a religion with different divisions anyway - not so much 'Christians vs Satanists' as 'Protestants vs Catholics' or 'Shia vs Sunni'. Sometimes fighting one another, other times allied against a common foe.

More relatively obscure EU characters might give me more to work with - they are expecting me to use Darth Talon, Mace, Dooku, Aayla Secura etc and I wanted to have a few surprises in there.

Let me know your favourite characters who would fit as NPCs, either as unlikely allies or antagonists. I appreciate your help, and who knows, you might encourage me to like the EU a bit more!

Hiyas:

Maybe consider Quinlan Vos? Kyle Katran? A'Sharrad Hett? Mara Jade (Lucas hates her)?

Ki Adi Mundi would try to have a competition w/Plo Koon to see who's boss. Yarel Poof ends up making pizza for the Emperor in the Death Star.

Thanks for that! Palpatine and Anakin are dead by this point, but the Death Star is still around. I'd considered Mara Jade (who would still be Empire rather than Jedi) and Quinlan Vos. I enjoyed Dark Forces and felt that Kyle Katarn would probably be independent (or Alliance, even) rather than Jedi. Arguably so would Vos and Aayla - I know the players won't want to fight them.

Not quite sure who Hett is, I'll have to look that up. But thanks, that's just the kind of thing I'm looking for.

Maybe Syfo Dias, purchaser of the clone army on behalf of Tyranus/Dooku, avoided being shot down by the Pykes or survived in some other way. He was fairly radical, and the hints are he was a complex character, might be worth exploring.

I'll start with the source you hate the most. Rahm Kota . Based on the few bits of info you have given us regarding your alt-u game, he would be a good fit. Old, grouchy, and kind of a drunk after he lost his sight. There's a lot of potential in that, depending on how you use him.

Going down the list of sources, one of my favorite "villains" from TCW was Master Pong Krell . No one can sling a pair of saberstaffs like him .

If you're pretty loosey-goosey with your timelines, I always had strong love/hate relationship with Kreia .

Jedi Master K'Kruhk has shown up in several stories. He is everything a samurai Jedi would be. Depending on how huge of a fan your players are, they may not recognize him.

DOUBLE POST DISREGARD

Edited by LETE

Hi our lovely DoctorWhovish lady Maelora ;)

One doubt, there is any special reason because you dislike SW "new contents"? Try to don't use Jar Jar on your sentence only please XD It's because the simplist point of view of "black & white" or there is something else?

What things do you consider "proper" to give you suggestions? Everything from episodes 4, 5 and 6 or something else?

A hug to you :)

PS: What do you think about the new big-eyebrowsed Doctor?

Thanks guys, this is perfect. They seem to have quite a bit of info and are obscure enough to give me room to play around with them. Thanks to whafrog and kaesoe.

Kaesoe, I may hate the source, but I don't necessarily hate the characters. I've been GMing for 30+ years, and I'm used to clipping and cutting from all kinds of sources and making them my own. Some of my favourite NPCs came from sources I disliked. Some of my players have told me they disliked a given character until they saw my portrayal of them.

I know some people here have an encyclopaedia-like knowledge of the EU, and could point me in some interesting directions. Personally I think the EU is a useful resource - you'd go crazy if you tried to incorporate everything, but cherry-picking the most helpful bits is ideal. So you guys help me cherry-pick! :)

Hi Josep!

Actually I kinda liked JarJar, kinda liked Phantom Menace. Nowhere near as good as the originals, but I liked it well enough. It was the next two I considered an atrocity. Although some ways I guess it's a good thing - without them I'd never, ever have worked so hard to make an alternate campaign to play in. But that's another story.

I welcome any suggestions from any source - anything I can use at all. The players are expecting to see Kit Fisto, Shaak-Ti, Asokha, all those characters are fairly well-known. But I want to throw some other ones, keep them on their toes.

Yes, I like Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. I liked Matt Smith too. In fact, I've loved all the Dr Who actors, I'm not hard to please there!

Hiyas:

Another woman popped into mind: Lumiya, from the original Marvel comics. Obscure enough?

L

Bariss Offee might fit a fanatical Jedi...she bombed the Temple in TCW, but was also a Healer in the Medstar duology.

If you're pretty loosey-goosey with your timelines, I always had strong love/hate relationship with Kreia .

Kreia is a big favourite - I loved Old Republic until they retconned it.

But the leader of our PCs is based on her - even called her 'Kaiya'. She's basically an amalgam of KotOR's Kreia and Wynne from Dragon Age.

Thanks - Bariss and Lumiya came to mind, but I wondered if they might be too well-known?

They certainly fit the concept of 'jerkass Jedi', though!

I have been very vague about who survived the Jedi war with the Vong, but I'm coming to the point I have to let the cat out of the bag. I worry that some might be too 'nice' - I have no problems thinking Mace might believe the 'means justify the end', but that seems out of character for many. On the other hand, I can see the nice ones staying to help guide the Order rather than just abandoning it. The Jedi/Sith/Seperatist faction works as allies or antagonists depending on the story and current perspective.

Want to focus on Jedi, Clones, both or anything else?

If focus on Jedi, why don't try to create a excision from the Jedi Order (probably guided by Palpatine) and create a counterforce giving more protagonism to Jedi and that Dark Order.

If want to focus on Clones, due to war Jedi Order remain "pure" and didn't participated the war, they remain fighting against Dark Siders and meditating while there is war.

A mix between both them. Jedi that didn't joined the war where marginated and even hunted. The other ones left or joined other factions and continued as Protectors or Mentors.

Another possible option apart from that is that the Empire already was created by "political consense" and began as a soft-totalitarian that fight Republic corruption and Confederation Rebels.

Just remebered: Vergere.

Want to focus on Jedi, Clones, both or anything else?

I have the set-up I want already - in brief, a unified Jedi/Sith faction with the Seperatist remnants, with both droid and clone armies (the latter stolen off the Empire), trying to restore the Old Republic. Our Alliance faction is trying to set up a new one, not restore the old one.

What I'm looking for is NPCs from the EU, who might fit into that concept. Either fairly well-known ones, who may have appeared in Clone Wars or the prequels, or more obscure ones that my players might not know about. The players are a mix of casual fans, who don't know much beyond the movies, and those like me who know a bit about the EU but are not experts. They all know who Yoda and Boba Fett are, but not everyone will know about Savage Opress or Cad Bane, say.

TCW has a wealth of bit characters, any of which could have as rich a story as you want. That's mainly what I like the show :)

If you want a Clone who might have come out of hiding, there's Cut Lawquane:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cut_Lawquane

From the TCW episode The Deserter, he decided the war made no sense to him, so he left, married a Twi-lek and took up farming. Those probably aren't his kids though, but there might be future ones... :) Anyway, maybe some events have given him a reason to launch himself back into the galactic struggle.

There's also the TCW episode Lightsaber Lost:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lightsaber_Lost

Jedi Master Tera Sinube is pretty obscure. Gramps with a lightsaber can be pretty amusing, easily underestimated.

There's also the weird aliens Ione Marcy with her sideways eyelids; and Cassie Cryar with her crazy jumping abilities that could put anybody trying to catch her to the test...

There's also the episode Bounty (season 4) with Ventress and a set of bounty hunters (led by Boba Fett). The prince who tries to rescue his sister could easily become a formidable opponent or a power player in your future universe.

I've got some EU oldies for you:

Empatojayos Brand and Joruus C'baoth

Hiyas:

Step on some toes & use Halagad Ventor... As far as I can tell from your posts, he (his tragic story*) encompases all the turbulent uchrony/alt. galaxy you're running.

Throwing a hat in the ring...

Asokha Tano might not be a a bad fit. Sure she is annoying in the movie and early episodes of Clone wars, but she grows up, and has left the jedi order, with all her jedi training. She could be a nice dark horse to surprise players with, especially 10-30 years after the clone wars.

I have no idea why people think she's annoying.

I think it was that first season and the "movie." She's snotty, and a pretty uppity 13 year old style teenager. Which is perfectly in character, but there's a reason I don't have a teenage daughter. :) At least not yet.

That being said, I really like how her character arc'd and matured across the series, culminating in her final story. those are some of the most interesting episodes to watch for me.
