Very OT:TCW Mandalorians

By tiefanatic, in X-Wing

Like with all things, there are good and bad. Unfortunately, "Canon" seems to be the deciding factor.

Erasing the inanity of the EU is the best thing to happen to Star Wars in ages. Now there are only 3 bad movies sullying it instead of 3 bad movies and dozens of books and comics. There were a few decent books (no, I don't consider the Taviss books in the good category), but 4 to 5 pieces of garbage for every half way decent one is a bad track record.

I'm guessing you're not a fan of the EU.

Wait wait wait...

...the dogs, or the toy cars?

'cause I might be in on this depending on your answer.

The dogs, of course.

Since Cardigan Welsh Corgis are so absolutely NOT Corgis, I like to call them by derogatory nicknames, such as: brindled poseurs, calico-wearing snots, etc.

Does anyone else do the same?

You have to acknowledge the existence of something before you can care enough about it to apply epithets. Pembrokes are the true and rightful heir to the corgi name, not those tail-having imposters.

Watching people defend the EU as good story telling is endlessly amusing. Please continue

Watching people who have clearly ready/played everything in the EU so they can say the whole EU was crap is equally amusing, keep making a fool out of yourself.

Btw, nice thread hijack

I think the problem is I read a lot, so I have a lot to compare it to outside of star wars, and it compares poorly.

I'm curious which comics you read. Just like the books, there are good and bad ones.

That's probably true, it was a long time ago, I don't recall the name. There was cloned emperors, does that sound familiar?

Yup. Dark Empire, fairly popular but I'm not exactly sold on it. About the only comics I can easily recommend are those by JJM.

I'm in the same boat as Perniciousducks. I started with the Thrawn trilogy, and loved it, then went on to Jedi Academy, truce at Bakura, the Crystal Star, Courtship of Princess Leia, and the Han Solo books from the 80's, and a few others, most of which were ok at best. Shadows of the Empire and Tales of the Bounty Hunters were cool, but not amazing, same with dark horse's Dark Empire and X-Wing comics.

It seemed like the best of the EU was pretty good, and the worst was terrible. But I've read a lot of other science fiction which sets the bar pretty high for my standards. I tried reading Shadows again when S&V was announced but the writing was so bad I couldn't get past the second chapter.

I did like so of the Legacy stuff I read. I liked the idea of Imperial Knights, Luke's junkie Bounty Hunter grandson, and few other bits. I hated the idea of a Tuskan Raider that became a Jedi, thats exactly the kind of crap the kills the EU for me.

...my favoured Mandalorians are of a different cloth...

Yes! It was KotOR 2 that finally overcame my hatred of Boba Fett and made me think that Mandos are really cool!

Why would you hate Boba Fett? He is a little oversaturated in the fanbase, but there's a reason for it.

Funny enough, that reason stems back to 1980.

Ok...after reading this thread I have a question.....where are we going and why are we in this hand basket?

I don't like Boba Fett for the same reason people don't like Traviss's Mandos - he seems too much like a self-insert character for people to live out their power fantasies. Never given any character definition beyond "ridiculously badass." Canderous Ordo, on the other hand, was both badass and complicated. Because he had more than three lines.

As for the comics - I actually am not a huge fan of a large chunk of the popular ones (most of Ostrander and JJ Miller's works, for example, in addition to the dreadful Dark Empire books). I did think that most of the X-Wing Rogue Squadron comics were pretty solid, and I actually thought that Legacy: War was a really good wrap up to an otherwise mediocre series.

I completely agree that Shadows of the Empire's writing just kills any fun the concept could have for me. It infuriates me when a blogger I used to follow (and who constantly bashed the EU) claims that Shadows of the Empire (in particular Dash "Han Solo Lite" Rendar and Xixor "Vader's Best Frenemy") are actually thoughtful, well executed, and entertaining, rather than the lazy ripoffs they are.

Funny enough, that reason stems back to 1980.

I believe Dis is up next on the tour.

I alway thought that what made Fett interesting was the mystery man angle, more than just the badass part. He's the Clint Eastwood spaghetti western loner character. All five of the ESB bounty hunters give you this glimpse of something else within the star wars universe, beyond the galactic civil war, that seems just as dangerous but without any ties to either side. Fett's the only non-rebel in the OT that talks back to Vader, other than Tarkin, which puts him in an interesting place. He seems to consider himself Vader's equal, or at least isn't threatened by him. And he does in almost no time at all, what the Empire couldn't do in three years, track down the crew of the Falcon.

Is this really the best forum to discus your favorite version of Mandalorians, or what you consider to be canon? I thought this was a forum for discussing the X-wing miniatures game. I am sure there are a number of other forums somewhere on the interwebs that would be a more fitting place for this thread.

Also I understand that the OP titled this thread as OT, and I had the choice of ignoring it, but I find that there are too many threads lately that are off topic. I would like to see topics concerning X-wing miniatures, and not just Star Wars in general. I love Star Wars, and discussing Star Wars as much as the next person here. However, this is not the place for this discussion.

Apparently it's okay to congest the forums with anything we want, so long as we stamp discussions with the unofficial "OT" thread designator. I like corgis, so maybe I'll make an OT thread (or 10) about those next.

Corgis are totally OP. And the devs nerfed terriers.

My corgi will share almost any food with me, except pickles. She spits them out every time, but she loves lettuce and tomatoes.

Funny. My cat likes spaghetti sauce but wont eat tomatoes. He was a stray kitten so he probably survived eating out of trash cans, anything is food to him.

My cat seems to have an empathic feeling for when meals are and rushes to the table to beg for food.

Tusken Raider that became a Jedi? If you are referring to Tahiri Veila, she wasn't actually a Tusken, she was a human who's parents had tended the wounds of a Tusken tribe chief, and he was sparring with the husband one morning when his tribe saw him, and thought he was under attack, so they killed her parents and burned down the farm, but he found her still alive (she was a baby), and due to the mistake, he made his tribe raise her.

Or acknowledge that canon is absurd.

Well if you accept that, then there's no way to have a reasonable discussion let alone a debate. It's again like trying to discuss history with someone who refuses to accept history as being accurate.

If you have someone who says the real reason for WWII was due to the Asgard (from SG1) making Japan bomb Perl, because the US Navy was harboring Goa'uld... How do you argue with someone who takes that kind of stance?

The same goes for Canon. Canon serves two purposes, to provide some sort of guide to keep things consistent in a IP with more the one author. The second and less important purpose is to give people a framework to discuss said IP.

Without canon there's no common reference to base the discussion on, and you have something like the above WWII example. If someone won't accept established canon as being accurate then there's next to no reason to even discuss anything with them, because you aren't even talking about the same series of events.

Anyone who says that Pearl Habor REALLY happened because of something that happened in Star Gate SG-1 really needs to learn how to separate reality from fiction.

You actually made my point for me. The Bombing of Pear Harbor is a real event. It makes sense to discuss why it REALLY happened. What were it's real causes and real effects. We can discuss how things that happened in the Bombing of Pearl Harbor are related to say September 11th.

But to have he same kind of discussion about something that is fictional is just absurd.

It's not absurd if you're a nerd

Or perhaps nerds are just willing to embrace the absurd

Are you fando's still at this?
