Dual Lightsaber and Ataru

By Stranix, in General Discussion

A dual lightsaber has the linked 1 quality and we can see that the saber sawrn can also add the quality linked X (x=equal to force rating).

From your opinion, should we count this combinaison as linked 1+X ?

It seems to me too much powerful no ?

I don't know about whether or not it's X or X+1 (I'd have to read the talent) but it's not really too powerful, no. Plenty of guns have autofire, which does much the same thing without the restrictions. In addition it takes 2 Advantages per extra strike and you can't convert successes to advantage. On average, you difficulty dice (2) will cancel out an equal number of ability dice. In addition you actually need to hit to make use of the ability. That means that in order to make use of the Linked quality, on average you need an extra die for each rank of Linked. Since we're talking about 4 ability dice to have a reliable chance of using Linked 1, I don't see Linked 2 being significantly more powerful.

Saber Swarm states that when you activate it the next Lightsaber (Agility) check "gains the Linked item quality, with ranks equal to Force rating." In every other instance where an ability states "gain X <quality>" and an item or character already has that quality, you use the better of the two. You don't combine them.

Thanks it's much clearer for me.

A good rule of thumb with this system (or any game system really) is that if it sounds too good to be true, than it probably is.

In such case combining Ataru's Saber Swarm with the Double-Bladed Lightsaber's inherent Link quality would be far too good to be true.

There's also precedence for the "not stacking" in the Defensive Training, which says the character gains Defensive X, where X = ranks in the talent. This would supersede any innate ranks of Defensive that the weapon might have, such as the Defensive 1 found in a vibro-sword or the Defensive traits gained from using a Lorrdian Gemstone as the focusing crystal in a lightsaber.
