Artwork Mismatched

By lahomen, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

So I opened the City of Secrets Chapter Pack, and was intrigued to notice that, while the cover art of the chapter pack depicts a man sitting on the Iron Throne, there were no cards in the pack that referenced the Iron Throne, or used that art. Interestingly, however, the chapter pack contained a card, Bound by Honor, that used the cover art from the Core set of Robert and Eddard. The Core set itself, however, did not use this art.

Also contained in City of Secrets was Ser Barristan Selmy, with artwork that matches the cover art for a later chapter pack in this series. That chapter pack, presumably, will not contain Ser Barristan Selmy.

The artwork is great, the cards are great... but what's the deal? Why not just put SBS on the cover of this pack?

~Bah, that's nothing. If you want a real art snafu, check out Winter Storm from the Thorns set. The entire card's art and layout is 180 degrees out of whack!

That is true, btw. the card face's orientation relative to the card back is flipped compared to other plots; I noticed it a while ago one time while sleeving the cards in my plot deck. I'm just anal enough for it to bother me a little bit. :-P

I think all the plots from Thorns were set reversed in respect to the card back relative to the plots from other sets. I don't think it's just Winter Storm.

Cover art not matching card art seems like a marketing choice, not an actual mistake? And FFG recycles art all the time, so it doesn't surprise me that the cover art from the Core Set became a card at a later time. Heck, the board game actually had the first ever Queen of Thorns "portrait art," which was used after the board game was published for CCG card art.

back of the box art also dosen't appear to be in the set.

I was underwhelemd by the art in general in this pack. I liked a couple of the shadow cards.....but not a lot caught my eye.

I thought it was about on par with the usual assortment. Some outstanding, most good, and few pretty generic. Tyrion is awesome, although seemingly existing in some sort of storyline time paradox. (No nose while Hand never happens.) Arya is very cool, and Selmy is good art... but in order to make it appear "shadowy" it really just looks like they put some sort of lame red/grey filter over the artwork on the card.

I'm looking forward to the whole King's Landing setting more than anything for LCG for a while now though. Lots of cool stuff coming up.

I feel that the artwork for Meryn Trant is actually a different Kingsguard character, who shall remain nameless to avoid spoilers.

Hm, hadn't really looked at Trant closely.... Now you've made me curious, I'll have to go check now.
