New cards against old scenarios

By sunnymcduff, in Strategy and deck-building

I am really new to the game and just got the Hunt for Gollum expansion. My question is: can I use the new cards that came with Hunt for Gollum against the core set scenarios? I was never able to defeat the 3rd scenario solo and thought some new cards would help. Any rules against doing this? Any insight would be appreciated, thanks.

Yeah, feel free. Cards like Asfaloth and Gondorian Shield make some of the older scenarios much easier.

Thanks, I also just discovered easy mode. I think I will have to try that. I only play this game solo and it has been a challenge.. A very fun challenge though.

Ok if you play only solo you check my youtube channel where is a lot of solo session include Dol-Guldor as well. Cheers!

I'm a relatively new player as well, and managed to beat Escape from Dol Guldur straight solo a handful of times using only Core set cards (actual ratio of wins vs. games played was very low, though). I won't lie, it was extremely difficult, and the luck factor on my few victories was high… but victory was very thrilling/rewarding when it finally happened! I'll post the winning decks in a separate thread when I have a moment (maybe later this week)...

But as others have said, you're not obligated to limit yourself to Core set cards… I'm just a masochist who absolutely wanted to beat the game using Core cards only!

Interestingly, my win ratio on "easy mode" was probably worse than in standard mode (I have actually won more solo games in standard than easy mode, ironically)… Among other things, King Spiders and their "When Revealed" and Shadow powers (exhaust a character) showed up more frequently in easy mode, which was a real hassle.

Thanks for the advice and your insights on this. I am interested to see the decks you play.

Hi, and welcome to this magnificent addiction game :)

Relatively new here as well: I got the core set when it was released, but at that time the game didn't click on me. Returned to the game this year due to a challenge accepted on BGG and had a blast. Literally.

I started with building decks from the core set, and I managed to beat all the Scenarios up to Into the Pit. Now I returned to the old scenarios adding cards from the Shadows of Mirkwood adventure packs and give everything another run (ideally, playing each scenario 10 times, and then move to the next one).

As soon as I'm done with this, I'll build decks with Khazad-dum and the related APs. And so on.

And every time I attempt an old adventure with a new deck, it's just like a new game. So, returning to old it's not actually returning to old: it's a new way to taste a timeless classic :)

I'm doing the old tried and true, you can only use the card pool available at that stage of the game. Tough, but it has shown me the true progression of the game from beginning to where I'm stuck now. Enjoyably stuck. And even though I have EVERYTHING sitting in my storage - - - I'll get to them all eventually.

Cheers
