Music while playing.

By Invader, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Just wondering if anyone incorporates music and sound effects into your game and what have you found that works the best? Ideally im only looking to use an iPad and/or android phone but if there's a particularly good system someone uses with a laptop I could go that route.

Music I keep on my phone (complete songs).

If someone has found a good sound board I'd like to know about it.

Best idea ever is to have music going. When we begin everyone will be talking, but when the Star Wars Crawl I always create and the Main Intro song comes on, it always sets the mood. Encourage strongly using music(although it sounds super strange to others) and starting every session with a crawl.

Spotify has great music to use.

What's the best way to organize and implement it though? There's a lot of music on spotify but it can't reeally handle any sound effects I'd want to use, blaster fire and the like.

I use Spotify playlists which I trigger from my phone, which is playing through my sound system using AirPlay.

I have a variety of playlists of Star Wars music themed along the lines of "Romance", "Mystery", "Combat", etc.

For each scene I just shuffle play on the right playlist.

Did a quick Google search, and it looks like that the Syrinscape Sci-Fi player has FINALLY released (I've been waiting for what seems like forever!).

With the download there's two free sound sets, not entirely thematically suitable for Star Wars IMO, but there some really cool semi-randomized sound board options and it looks like a pretty cool product.

If anyone remembers Syrinscape from the free days, this is a much more robust program, but with that comes the lack of flexibility...far as I can tell, all the sounds are locked into an "ASSETS" file instead of being separate .wav files like back in the day.

Good news is he's beta-testing a SoundSet editor, so that might become a reality in the near future.

Anyway. Nifty little product for the right application. At this point, I'd probably have some background music playing (I really like the Republic Commando soundtrack as of late) and bring in some extra sounds from SyrinScape when appropriate to "set the mood."

I have been using the current Syrinscape at the table for ambient noise for a while now and it works pretty well. I also usually have ITunes up for Star Wars Theme music. If you haven't listened I recommend finding episode 103 of the Order 66 Saga Podcast....Play that funky music Proxy. It is a pretty good discussion about music at the gaming table.

I have the soundtracks for the original trilogy on my iPhone and I just play them continuously throughout the session. The 20th Century Fox fanfare from Episode IV let's everyone know we're starting :)

For the first session I use the star wars intro and a crawl to set the story, on the sequential sessions I use clone wars intro and do a recap of what happened previously and while they where away.

Also, as people have said, I have play lists using only the songs from the original trilogy. They are named space combat, action, moody (force theme) and dark (for the sad or bad moments) and play them on random order.

For the sound effects I found too cumbersome to try to match every single one, so I usually just let they play with random intervals on the background. Only in specific moments (like when the hyper drive of krayt fang failed) I match it with something specific.

On occasion I use the sounds of tabletopaudio.com to set the stage without music.

All this I do using the songs & dragons free app for Android because I'm a mobile GM

Man, this topics comes up at least once a month. Here is a link to another thread about music, I posted some links to some good Star Wars songs in it.

Hope this helps.

For my last session, I didn't play music, but I played two separate YouTube videos at the same time. One was jungle sounds, and the other was a creepy ambience thing. It played while they were trekking through Cholganna, and it really helped set the creepy mood.

If you use Android, and you don't mind dropping a few dollars on a program, I'd recommend " Player Pro " with the DSP Pack . It's a music player that allows you to use crossfading between songs. For my games, I set it up with a bunch of Star Wars music either in a playlist or at random and the crossfading allows for smooth, almost imperceptible transitions between songs.

If you're looking for good music to play during games, I'd suggest checking out the soundtracks to Knights of the Old Republic I and II, The Old Republic, Republic Commando, the Shadows of the Empire Soundtrack, and of course, the soundtracks to the movies themselves.

I try to mantain the SW feel. Continous background music (generally from KOTOR), and at key moments I look for intense music that have the proper emotion (love, hate, fear, tension).

I cannot play without music :)

Be welcome Invader. And don't forget to use Search option next time. There are plenty posts with awesome aportations from people here ;)

I was asked about my "Cholganna" playlist by another member, so I thought I would share this with everyone. And for those that do not use music, I highly, highly suggest that you do if you are able to. Normally I play my Star Wars music in the background, but for Cholganna I really wanted a different ambiance. These two really worked well together to give the jungle sounds, and just enough of a dark feel to everything. I use Google Chrome, and have two tabs open so I can play each video in the tabs at the same time. Enjoy!

I haven't had the chance to use music in a game, yet (mainly due to lack of players), but I have used it in other games that I have run. The right tune at the right time can get your players really excited, or freak them right the poodoo out.
For example, in a 3.5 Eberron D&D game, the party came upon a section of ruins beneath a city. Already having the tune set up on youtube, I played the first 30 seconds or so of the Map Room theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark (look it up) on a semi-low volume as I revealed the map. One of my players instantly recognized the tune and, her eyes going wide, said "Guys, I think we're in deep trouble."

As a few others mentioned, I have a playlist downloaded to my iPhone so I can trigger the appropriate music at key moments. I also start every campaign with the main Star Wars theme and message crawl.

I used to use music throughout the entire game but anymore I just play it at moments of importance in the plot or character's lives.

I have a 20th century fox moving spotlight video on my galaxy note 3 (technically it's a phablet not a phone)... I start with that video (which includes the music) and then go to the main title from I think the Phantom menace (I have music sorted into folders by theme which makes it easier to find something appropriate)

I find Stravinski's Rites of Spring to provide the suitable atmosphere. I use a lot of Bartok and Shostakovich as well

I actually found the full soundtracks to the movies as a playlist on youtube and have been playing that for my group (the GM needs his computer for other things, so the outlaw tech gets to DJ). Here is the one for Episode IV , Episode V , and Episode VI (that last one seems to also have Episode I snuck on there too...)

You'd be surprised how many times the music has been in synch with the action in the game.
