US Nats - Teams, Accommodation, and more!!!

By dutpotd, in UFS General Discussion

So... Time flys and, although there isn't a huge amount of buzz about this event on the forums yet, I can't help but realize it is only 3 short weeks away from the US Nationals (that's singles and teams) and the Origins Game Fair happy.gif

As some of you may know, I am from Western Canada (Stampede City - Calgary, Alberta) and I greatly look forward to my summer trips south of the border. I have attended Origins before, and it is one of my favorite cons (second only to gencon, and it is never long enough), but I have not played UFS at Origins before. In fact, last year's Origins was where I got pulled into the game of UFS by the friendly folks and the Realm of Midnight/Deadly Ground sets. I have a few questions:

Teams:

I have played the team format before of course, and I have met enough friendly Americans who are all great players. I was lucky enough to bump into one that I had a special amount of respect for (played him in my first round of Worlds last year and my first big tournament entry) at Can Nats a few weeks back. We exchanged info and considered going together for teams, the bad thing is that I seem to have misplaced his contact info (business card) - yipes! So, if Nick A is reading this and still wants to team up with me come the end of June, please get in touch with me ASAP [email protected] (or preferred, if you haven't lost my card... sorry bout that... at my work email on said card)

That said, I'm not sure if we have a 3rd in mind to round out our numbers, and not having heard from Nick yet I'm not sure what we want to do about it. With that in mind, if you are in the 'going to US Nats and don't have a team sorted out' boat please feel free to contact me at the same email stated above.

Accomodation:

I usually stay at the Marriot a few blocks away from the centre... but I don't have anything arranged yet. Is there a favorite/common hotel that many UFS players rent out/party at during the con days (and nights of course)? And, with that in mind, if you are in the 'going to US Nats and don't have accommodation sorted out' boat and want to mitigate your cost of travel, please get in touch with me again per the contact info above and we can sort something out.

More:

I plan on arriving in the pleasant city of Columbus on the first day of the con, i.e. Wednesday mid morning (10am or so I will have touched down and sorted myself out). What do all of the other UFS players get involved in at Origins? And where should I be partying in downtown Columbus on a Wednesday night?

Qualify?

aparently steven thinks you have to qualify. nats is an open event at origins in columbus ohio.

Worlds is also an open event as well. (it was not last year)

Hi! I'm from Columbus OHIO and live within 2 blocks of the convention center (no you may not stay at my apartment).

To the OP: I have little idea what you're going to do Wednesday of Origins... AFAIK Origin's is BARELY a convention on that day... but call me and let me know when you're arriving, I may be able to give you a lift to somewhere... but I have to work that day. Perhaps go north on High Street 7-9 blocks to OSU Campus and slum around there... though it'll be summer then, and lacking in activity for the most part I would guess...

Starting Friday Columbus has The Community Festival, where in people partake in drunken frivorly in the park next to the conventon center, listening to music, drinking alcohol, paying to much for food. Then there's the gay parade that happens on saturday! Always fun!

So definitely give me a call (you should stll have my number right?).

I have one local guy that's going to be at Origins on Friday (Fire Guy) and needs a team mate.

Game on.

Well this is retarded... obviously no one will be coming to our Texas regional if NAtionals is the same weekend... epic fail... =(

Oh Steven, thank you for derailing my thread ^^ (just kidding, I know you are new and I hope to see you at a major event sometime soon, if not at a regional closer to your home on a date that doesn't conflict with an event I am already attending).

I am sure, however, that your torunament organizer is well aware of the conflict and still expects/understands a certain turnout of players that aren't going to the Nationals. People have to pick and choose events (for financial reasons of course) so I'm quite positve you will have a fun weekend the end of the month anyways!

To OtakuV - it's all good, sorry about bringing it up here, thought I would mention it on top of discussing accomodation with others which I do want to get under my belt sooner or later.

To Vermillion - I know it is barely a convention on that day, but I will still use it to get my badge all sorted out, have a nice lunch at one of the many wonderful restaurants in the area and generally enjoy any day I have off work ^^ Thank you for all of the information though! Uh, err, I should have your number somewhere, I think I recall storing it in a place I wouldn't lose it... Umm yeah, I will let you know if I can't find it and you can pm/email me it again in a worst case scenario. I am very much looking forward to seeing you again, and this time I won't play the part of your Canadian wine-o the night before the big event (I guess I can't promise that though...)

I will wait to talk with Otaku about the third, but will get back to you ASAP if we desire to join up with the (Fire Guy).

I have to run and build some sort of deck for our local that starts in a few hours here (I have been staring at cards for the last 4 days and haven't decided on anything worthy of putting together - I hate being last minute)... And with the news that Omar is wrecking face slowly with a Gief mill deck (indirect grats to him out of thread btw) I will have to rack my brain even harder to determine my desired course of action for the end of the month.

What the heck is this geif mill doing? (link?)

email: alexandernjames AT gmail.com if you need my number.

I don't know what the Gief mill is doing, but whatever it is he did it well this past weekend. What are the odds on Omar defending his US Nats title? Some people might want in on that action ^^

Vermillion: Email sent, sorry for losing your phone number.

Everyone else: Shameless bump, I need some advice on the accomodation thing!

Is this directed at me? We talked briefly at PotM, you generously provided me and my group with patches we didn't have :) Sadly, we have yet to play a game...

Not to mention, my group took a gander at your awesome character card. On that note when will it be out? Are you going to play as yourself to defend your title at US nats this year?

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW!!!

here's the thing, i didn't know which of you was "dut"

so.. yeah... :P

Oh, sorry. I also met you at Origins last year when I was introduced to the game. On Sunday you were hanging around the area playing with your vandalized Voldo (it had writing over it's ability, I guess you broke him too ^^) and with some card boxes I believe.

I ended up trading you some of the rares/uncommons I pulled in my first few boxes of Deadly Ground for some Vega character cards from the same set (I quickly learned that, although playable, he isn't my competitive choice come the day of the big event).

In fact, you were my very first trade in the game of UFS happy.gif

I think worlds last year was the only event I didn't speak with you on some level, and that was probably becuase I was mostly afraid of the liquid form nearby and the relative proximity of something called Chubbs!

I will make a point of playing you sometime this year at Origins.

I said Mill because i don't know what it is, SINCE I (am pretending to) HAVE NEVER PLAYED MTG AND AM UNFAMILIAR WITH ANOTHER GAMES SLANG BASED OFF OF ONE SINGLE OUTDATED CARD WHEN A PERFECTLY REASONABLE TERM ALREADY EXISTS FOR IT IN THIS GAME, AS DEFINED BY THE RULE BOOKS! (caps makes it more true)

Printed and posted on my wall here at the office for hilarity purposes only. I'd say that this is getting 'exhausting' (all puns intended), but then I would just be lieing, Vermillion's hate for the use of the word Mill has no borders and it always brings a smile to my face gran_risa.gif

*snirks* Mill's here to stay (as a term). Someone needs to face facts on this one. :)

Since Team NJ is apparently going to be a no show, I'm looking for crash space at National's.

Send me an email at [email protected] if you got room available.
