Completely OT: Did you like Sabine or Janan more?

By tiefanatic, in X-Wing

I would argue that it IS in a good way. Nothing wrong with appreciating good music. Moulin Rouge was pretty cool.

No I meant there is a specific way I like my wife rubbing off on me. :)

K, so hitting up Star Wars .com, here is the skinny on Sabine:

"Sabine Wren was a Mandalorian warrior, explosives expert, and graffiti artist -- qualities that came in handy as one of the first rebels against the Empire. Part of the Ghost crew, Sabine used her gift for bomb-making to great effect against the Empire, and would often mark her work with spray-paint tags. Her classic Mandalorian armor was notable for incorporating her own custom stylings, reflecting her creative-meets-rebellious spirit."

So there you have it - she is a Mandalorian Warrior. No reference to Death Watch - but again, we aren't entirely sure Death Watch is still around. As a supposition, we might eventually find out that her parents (whom she said we taken from her by the Empire) might have been Death Watch, which (due to it's warrior culture would be a threat to the Emperor's rule) were wiped out by the Empire. After all, the Death Watch were in league with the Separatists (which from the perspective of the Empire would be rebels and mercenaries).

She might even turn out to be the daughter of Bo-Katan - after all, her sister's name was Satine, which is very close to Sabine, and was left at the end of the Clone Wars appearances to rebuild the warrior ways of the Mandalorians ...

OMG I LOVE THIS IDEA SO DARNED MUCH I CAN'T EVEN SQUEE.

I already noticed the nearness in name to Satine, and wondered at a connection, but I had honestly forgotten about her sister....

but currently we don't know that that's happened.

No and I hope they go into details about what did happen in the show, how did she get the armor, what happened to her people, ect...

She did say something her people but I can't remember exactly what. Something about fighting to save them from the Empire?

Well remember in TCW, the Emperor crushed Darth Maul who happened to be the head of Mandalore at the time, so presumably, the Emperor still controls Mandalore?

so presumably, the Emperor still controls Mandalore?

Per Wookiepdia, so take it for what it's worth...

Mandalore was on good terms with the Empire at the start but slowly the Empire started to take over more and more of it, even going as far as to take all their armor, and turn the people of Mandalore into slaves.

How that will line up with Rebels is of course unknown. But it seems as likely to happen as anything else and what Sabine said at least doesn't contradict it.

Now that theory deserves more looking into.....

Dont worry about the older material, we got 2 important people that works for LFL saying the older stuff is still canon till contradicted.

It has been contradicted. By The Clone Wars.

Well the other bit of good news is that one source says that the fine details of someing contradicted may not be canon, that doesnt mean the story as a whole isnt canon. My other source is the guy that created Mara Jade, he said he can easily write stoies that will fix canon issues.

All that being said we got back story showing whats left of the orignal Mandos traing arc troopers and probably regs as well, they learned Mando customs some where...

Further note, I think I remember the part in the show that everyone is thinking that is suposed to decanonise older mando material. That the current Mandos sent all there commandos to exile and death on one of its moons and they indeed died off.

The Jedi made a claim about the Sith thats sounds almost identical...

Actually, Maul's group was pretty much crushed by Grievious. I think a few survived, but his group of allies were pretty much scattered to the wind. A pity the comic didn't completely finish off Maul's arc, though it did give a lot of insight into it.

Back to the topic at hand, I certainly think that Sabine is hot and quirky. Thus far Kalan's not too interesting, I'm afraid. I like Hera and I think Zeb is hilarious.

It feels like starwarsy Firefly to me - which is a good thing.

I am a little annoyed at how too much developments are dictated by plot, rather than explained in what we see. For example, how well Hera is able to outfly four TIE-fighters while only halfway paying attention in one scene, but is threatened by three of them in the next, while not engaged in casual conversation.

But, sure,...

Anyway, right now Sabine > Kalan

I do like Kanan, I think he has a lot of potential. He will be the most difficult to set up and capitalize on of the characters, I think.

Sabine is best of all things, however.

Sabine, pink Mando and my daughter wants an action figure of her. WIN.

You Sir, won the kiddo lottery. Also, clearly are doing at least a decent job parenting, if not an awesome one. Kudos.

We're agreed on Sabine.

I agree that that is a little rocky, but not outside the possibilities of real, as the second wave could have been more skilled then their planetary counterparts, as they were drawn on for the ambush, if I remember correctly.

Regardless, pilots and first seasons tend to be rough, hopefully they'll tighten up the plot. I was just happy that the writing was good and solid snappy writing, which is one of the hallmarks (for me) of Star Wars.

I'm rather glad that the clone wars did away with the mando ****. The deathwatch are the oldschool mandos, but mandalore no longer wants war. It makes sense, they are like post imperial japan.

The funny thing is the guys we consider true mandos were working with the GAR cloners to help train ARCs. In effect the Republic is more mando than the current mando runing mandoville.

Deathwatch thinks they honor the traditions of the old ways but they are just psychopaths, looking at the new Mando chicks helmet it reminds me more of a deathwatch helmet, could be shes psychopathic because them there freaks were her family.

Me and Sabine are married already. In my mind at least. >.> <.<

I... dont think this is a good idea... When you two get a house you know what color shes gonna want it right? The color will be dead people... You know what color your neighbors hate more painted on any house than rainbows or electric pink...? Dead... People... Youll have to watch your back any time you dont fix the squash when see needs it done... When that happens you need to be unpredictable, Allways have 6 escape routs plained she wont know about, make sure she only knows to paths she thinks youd take that you wouldnt....

All you need to survive is two knives, one steel, one stone, the stone one will be sharper hence why Ewoks are so deadly. Youll need to take class in emergency preparedness, wilderness survival, and first aid, just in case you need to do cpr on yourself or try and identify anything you cough up after an explosion that could be kiwi sized and pink.

If she catches you off guard in bed remember its better you lose an arm rather than take damage to the head or chest. If your large intestine pop out dont painic, it initself will not kill you, you wont be able to scream however depending how intact your abdomen.is still in the right place... Shoot up a very high dose of adrenaline to keep you awake...

Now if shes attacking you in bed youll need to take her out quick by arming your fingers through the eyes sockets or putting the pam of your hand on top her wind pipe and your thumb deep into the spot where the meat of the jaw meets the neck...

This works well with unenvited guests too, like on people that try and sell me oven finger gloves or dehydrated water... Or little midget clowns trying to sell me blankets made with teeth...

Always be prepared

ps dont do any of that stuff I wrote you to anyone.

I'm with Damoel on Sabine, she's worth the risk.

<narrows eyes> Mine.

Joking aside, I really like both the female characters in the show so far. I don't see either of them getting damsel'd. Not that there is anything wrong with someone wanting to be rescued/swept off their feet (male or female) but it is nice to see new archtypes. You've got Sabine as the badass DGAF warrior woman, and Hera as the strong, caring protector type. Props to the writers!

I'm just going to say that Kanan and Hera are so obviously based on Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors. I'll explain further when I get back.

So, it's subtle - but I think I have enough evidence to bring it up. I believe Hera and Kanan are already established to be a couple.

In the first episode, Hera can be heard to say "what's up hon?" to Kanan when he comes in. At first, I though it was merely an affectation (I myself calls lots of people "hun"), but in the free ITunes episode "Droids in Distress" she calls Kanan "love" as well when they make the drop of crates.

Odd, my brain so just processed them as a couple, I don't think I considered the possibility that they aren't!

I even remarked to my friend that I loved that the writers just put them together. I loathe how many shows feel the need to constantly build romantic tension with "will they, wont they" crap. Sure, there is a place for that kind of story telling, but sometimes it is just nice to see some folks in love and happy. I'm happy that we're seeing less of the tension and more exploration of how to make on screen romance interesting without it.

That's the impression I got as well. They just seemed like they were together.

I totally agree! One of the things that I used to love about Firefly was the relationship between Zoe and Wash. Having Kanan and Hera together also creates the feel of family that you can see Sabine values so much in the crew. It's really a quaint way of having all the characters together and strongly bonded to a single cause.

It also heightens the tensions with Kanan being a Jedi, potentially losing a husband/father figure at any moment and explains why none of the crew would ever betray him regardless of the size of the bounty.

I hadn't really considered that. Hrm, yeh. It is a solid way to make the bounty a never ever choice.

I also like that it may lead back to one thing I liked from the EU, which was Luke revising the whole "no attachments" thing. Not really speaking any specifics, but I always liked that the NJO was an evolution of of the Jedi ways, not a strict re-implementation.

On the Firefly front, that is one of the things I adored about the storytelling. They had basically every major type of relationship dynamic going on. The comfy old shoe vibe from Wash and Zoe, the burgeoning romance between Simon and Kaylee, the will they wont they hate/love of Mal and Inara, and the fierce quiet overcomes all evil ('cept his own, obv) of Jayne's love of himself.

I love how Zeb follows the Jayne archetype ... the "you'd hate him if you didn't love him so much" vibe.

The other thing I'm happy with is (as much as they have the feel of Firefly) I never felt "oh, that's Mal" or "look it's the Kaylee clone!" You can definately tell how Filoni and crew loved and incorporated the feel of Firefly, but never attempted to be Firefly. Each of the characters has their own identity, even if the archetype they represent is firefly-esque.

Agreed. I was really worried about that going in, as at least two of the characters could have had direct corollaries in Firefly. Kanan could have been little more then Mal with the force, and Sabine could have been little more then a Mando version of Zoe. This has basically already been trashed, though. Kanan is way to hopeful, pleasant, open, and even well adjusted to be Mal, and Sabine is a walking ball of pyromaniac flavored adorable, which is really not Zoe.

Even though we watched it Friday night, I bought the DVD at my daughter's request Sunday at Walmart. She has now watched it every single day since. I don't know if she likes it more than Eps I-VI but she definitely likes it a lot. She's a big fan of Sabine.
