FINALLY getting to play an Epic game this thursday!

By Audio Weasel, in X-Wing

Any tips on Epic for me? The only one I can remember off the top of my head is "don't go overboard on huge ship upgrades"

Build a bunch of combo lists and mash them together. Also, higher pilot skill tends to be important. Take plenty of screens though. Generally more ships = better chance of wining.

Don't smash your little ships with your huge ships. They move weird.

Roark + CR-90 = ouch

Plenty generics. With more ships on the board pilot abilities yield less except AoE like Howlrunner.

And the corollary - smash the other guys little ships with your hugs ships when possible.

The first and only epic game I've played was very fun and very long and in it, I managed to smash 2 of my own and 4 of the opponents' small ships with the transport.

Also - buffs that apply to multiple of your other ships - like howlrunner's and etahns scale with number of ships, so keep that in mind. Etahn in particular is very effective since his ability can buff your own ships that are very far from him, as long as their target is in his firing arc.

Anti-swarm weapons like assault missiles generally work well, as you can expect your opponent to field a lot of ships - it's likely many of these ships will be close together. I had Blount with an assault missiles that did 7 total damage and then Blount was vaporized right after. Totally worth the points.

Don't go crazy on upgrades. The game will be long, you don't want to have to keep fifty different cards straight in your head each turn.

Stay the hell away from tantives!!!! Rrruuunnnnn...... Aawwwwwwaaaaayyyyyy...!!!

Ok, so I messed around on Voidstate's masterpiece, and here's what I've come up with so far. I feel like I may have over-upgraded the Corvette:

CR90 Fore + Dodonna's Pride + Torynn Farr + Single Turbolaser + Quad Laser Cannon + Slicer Tools

CR90 Aft + WED-15 Repair Droid + Engineering Team + Quad Laser Cannons + Tibanna Gas Supplies

2x Dagger Squadron + HLC

Etahn A'Baht + R2 + Adv Sens + PTL

Airen Cracken + Cluster Missiles

3x Tala

Looks okay to me, but i doubt you need Airen or the cluster missiles.

Put Roark in.

You are probably okay to drop an upgrade on the CR too. Slicer tools or a Team. Remember, you only get one action per side. Try and be action economical with your upgrades.

Swapped out Cracken for Roark + ICT (and bumped a Tala down to a Bandit for the needed point), but instead of taking out the Slicer Tools, I moved Toryn to the rear, and moved the WED to the fore, so that both actions could happen.

I like the fact that Roark has a much longer range for his ability than Cracken. I will probably try this setup with Roark, and with Cracken to see which I like better.

This may help:

And you can check out my CR-90 runs in the Battle Reports section.

(and 1000 posts. Woot!)

That's a lot of reading, thanks hothie. I'll definitely dig through that post.

Congrats on the 1000!

Pack that Corvette with stuff, 150pts + if you can.. you aren't going to get a chance to do that outside of an Epic game, so go big or go home! :)

On the huge ships: Stick to one schtick.

I like Sensor Team + Weapons Engineer + Han Solo, for maximum damage, but am also considering Double Tactician and the Engine upgrade equivalent, for ramming speed!

Try to figure out how to spend only the energy you acquire as you move per turn: A huge ship that runs out of reserves dies fairly quickly.

One excellent tactic for huge ships: Use them as a divider. Force half of their fleet into the full teeth of yours, and keep the other half at bay with your huge ship and a few flankers.

Assault Missiles are invaluable with the number of points your opponent is sure to be wielding. Try out the 19 point Z-95 to have them (5 points) at level 4 (13 points) with munitions failsafe (1 point) en masse! Simply by fielding 4-6 of these will force your opponent into a catch-22: adopt a non-formation and play into the teeth of your divide-and-conquer strat, or mass to concentrate fire, and get torn to shreds by missile-fire.

dont put anything on the aft that would need a action it will become a waist once you start taking hits. Recover and reinforce is all it will be doing

dont waist time with single tubro lasers unless you know you will be faceing a Decimator or shuttle's

ABOUT AIREN: HUGE SHIPS CANNOT TAKE FREE ACTIONS.

okay. I'm done.

Now, if you had Blount with Assault missile, I could see that serving a role, but with the set up you had, I didn't see a need for another action anywhere.

This actually gave me a couple of ideas. I've revamped to possibly running:

CR90 Fore + Quad Lasers + Comms Booster + Toryn Farr + Dodonna's Pride

CR90 Aft + WED-15 + Quad Lasers + Engineering Team + Tibanna Gas

Roark + ICT

Etahn + R2 + PTL + Adv Sens

2x Tala

2x Green Squadron + Chardraan + A-Wing Test Pilot + Opportunist + Predator + Stealth

Jake Farrell + Chardraan + A-Wing Test Pilot + PTL + Outmaneuver + Stealth

So Toryn peels tokens off of ships, which lets the GSP's trigger opportunist. Jake flanks and harass the rear of the opposing force. Etahn does his Etahning. Talas for extra guns on targets. CR90 shoots targets of opportunity. Considering taking the Stealth off of the A-Wings.

weasel, my advice is take a transport, throw some comm boosters on it, avoid slicer tools and the tantive. The tantive can suceed, but the transport way more than pulls it weight. best support ship in the game.

You know, I've heard that more than once. Here's the thing.... I still to this day get a chill down my spine when you first see the Tantive running like hell away from the ISD at the beginning of ANH. For me, it's a moral imperative to fly that ship in my first epic game.

Don't overload the corvette. If your going gunboat, then take weapons engineer and han. 3 quads are good. Slicer tools... they are better suited on the transport. I found that out the hard way.

If your going gunboat style corvette, make it selfish. All the upgrades should help it, not anyone else. Making a fleet command corvette is a different story. But there is not enough energy to do both.

Wait...

You want Higher PS and lots of ships.

That isn't really all that useful.

That's a really good tip there on the amount of energy available. i think what I have up there in the latest revision is pretty much a fleet command ship. I do want to keep at least one quad for extra shooting when possible, but I might take one of them off.

Weasel,

I wouldn't put Toryn Farr on the CR90, especially not if you're gonna give it the Dodonna's Pride tittle, as those both use up your ACTION.

If you want the Corvette to blast thing's reliably it'll need target lock's, so you're front section's action will almost always be locking,

now Iam sure the Sensor Cres + Weapon's Engineer + Han Solo has been mentioned before, it works really wel...

But if you want a little bit more action sharing/support shennennigans put Dodona's Pride on it and fly Dutch Vander next to it, that way you can Coordinate 2 ships, one of wich is Dutch who Lock's and allows the CR90 to also aqcuire a target lock (2 with WE and upto range 5 with the SC) but Dutch will have to be able to lock onto something himself so usually till turn 2 till that combo starts ;)

Hope this helps! ;)

I figured I would put Dodonna's Pride on the section it has to be on, then Toryn on the other section. Doesn't each section get its own action?

That is correct

Thought hard about your statement about a gunboat style corvette, and after comparing the 2 huge ships it looks to me like the Transport has the upgrade slots to be more of a C&C ship. Came up with this variation:

CR90 Fore+ Tantive IV + Han Solo + Quad Lasers + Quad Lasers + Backup Shield + Weapons Engineer

CR90 Aft + Jan Dodonna + Quad Lasers + Engineering Team + Tibanna Gas

Etahn A'baht + Adv Sens + PTL + R2

Roark + ICT + Recon Spec

Jake Farrell + A-Wing Test + Chardraan + PTL + Outmaneuver

Ten Numb + Sensor Jammer + HLC + Predator

2x Tala

Kind of a variation on the last list, but included Ten becaise between Dodonna and Etahn, he should have some crits. Jake still Flanking, Etahn still Etahning. I'm concerned about having the energy to power all 3 Quad Lasers, but I have no experience with an Epic ship so I'm not sure. Also might take Dodonna off, since he's only there to help the other ships. Dodonna coming off + Quad lasers coming off + the point I have left over would equal another Tala in the squad.

I can't justify the Tantive title card myself, I was going to say, because your spending 4 points and yet the extra team upgrade slot goes to waste.
But it just occurred to me as I typed this, if you absolutely have to go for the extra crew, then use the title card to put the second team on the fore section because your opponent is more likely to try to disable the aft first.

Also, I believe you are over by two points: http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel%20Alliance&d=v3!e!80:86,65,65,-1,-1,83:9:-1:U.29,U.-1;81:81,65,92,66:-1:-1:;74:18,43,-1,3:-1:-1:;46:0,38:-1:-1:;86:18,72:7:-1:U.56;41:57,44,23,-1,-1:-1:-1:;65:-1:-1:-1:;65:-1:-1:-1:
