WHY?

By Rebel23, in X-Wing

I assume you would want something along the lines of what Blood Bowl (PC) did to Blood Bowl (the miniature gameversion)?

-animation

-"plot"

-single player option against computer

-3d models

-online mode

-new ships as DLC

All of this would be nice but the question remains how appealing it would be as a computer game? Also it is easy to say this is what you want, but to make it work and look great, does require a gaming studio to produce that game.

Vassal is pretty much your best bet if you absolutely have no other options of finding opponents. Personally I find Vassal as appealing as X-Wing the MINIATURES (capitalized for a reason) game would be with everything being printed on cardboard. The 3D ship models just hit a right spot and make the game more fun for me. But I truly understand why people want to play it with Vassal (timing, practicing mechanics, space, storage etc.).

I hope things work out for you and you get to play some awesome X-wing games one way or the other (or both!!) :)

I was talking about playing on vassal AND using skype to talk about what's going on. Skype alone is another beast altogether (using proper cameras, supported in a fixed position) - I've never attempted that.

Oh.. Yeah I suppose that could work.

I know that it would take a studio. But me making one is not what I meant! I was talking about(as I said in that other post)I want an official game ran by FFG. They clearly know how to make software(X-Wing Mission Control) so I don't see why they shouldn't.

It's definitely a LOT easier to use than it was a year or so ago (thanks Mu0n), especially once you've got a game up and running, but setting it all up, starting a game, is still awful. It's not the XWing modules that are the problem, it's the interface design of Vassal. The very fact that it needs tutorials and video guides is testament to that fact.

The blatant truth is that if it was as easy as a modern Wii U game in terms of accessibility, it would crumble unto its own visibility, popularity and success and be shut down with a cease and desist letter. I think it's obvious we want to avoid making vassal a complete replacement of the tabletop experience, which FFG have worked hard to design and maintain.

Yeah I agree. But How much is Vassal? Does it really well well enough for you to enjoy a game without giving in to frustration?

Yes, I enjoy playing on vassal and have done so hundreds of times.

How much money though?

How much money though?

And you are not going to see an official FFG produced computer version of X-Wing for two primary reasons:

1. It would cost them sales of the miniatures.

2. They do not have the license to produce Star Wars computer games. That's a totally separate license and a far more expensive one.

So you're never going to see it.

As for Vassal, I recommend you just try it and judge for yourself. I've only played about five or so games there, but folks were really patient and helpful. Once you get past the first couple of games it starts to make make a little more sense. Play 10-20 games and I'm sure it becomes second nature.

The biggest benefit of Vassal X-Wing: You can play some really good players who come up with really good lists and learn from them. And you can make/play lists with cards you may not own just yet.

Under 13 but both grammatically competent and fairly eloquent on the internet?

There is hope for mankind.

Thanks! I'm flattered!

Vassal is free.

Not with that attitude!

Just so we're clear: I do think the TC should try Vassal. I also think the TC should go in with not so high of expectations.

Self righteous? Maybe. The fact of the matter is that my game time is limited, and I can't afford to spend that time fiddling around with a software program that, because its free, just doesn't have the support to make it properly functional. If that decision makes me self righteous, so be it. As a working professional I don't have time to jack around with things just to try to get them to work.

And yes, people DO misrepresent Vassal as the bees knees. That may not happen here, on this specific board, but there are plenty of Vassal aficionados that couldn't see its flaws if they hit them in the face. So, I guess it isn't really Vassal that bothers me. It is people who mis-represent Vassal and act like it is user friendly.

Sorry but who is TC?

1) I'm not so sure about that. I think if they gave away digital versions then people would be more likely to buy the physical game. That's just my 2 cents. Ultimately it is a business decision.

2) Agreed.

To add a third:

3) They would need to hire programmers just for digital content. Everything costs money.

At the GenCon In-Flight report they said that they are looking into digital content. But I think it is mostly still in the planning phases. We'll find out one way or the other, eventually.

I've not played vassel but i do thing its wrong to crap on people doing their best to let people play x-wing against a wider audience, people doing this are not getting paid its a work of love, even if you don't like the system try not to be quite so dismissive of people trying to do something selfless for their fellow gamers.

I'm not saying that the official online version would be completely free. You would need to make purchases of actual ships and log them in with the proof of purchase tokens

My advice was helpful. Not positive towards that specific suggestion, but helpful. Imagine for a second that the TC (Topic Creator to just answer that one right here) doesn't want to spend hours struggling with a software program, even if it means that they could play? Would you rather me keep my mouth shut and have them find out on their own, and be really disappointed, when they could have avoided that with a dissenting opinion?

The difference between me and you is that you make comments just to jack around with people. My comments are intended to inform the user on, oh, I don't know, actual negative consequences of buggy software. I've TWICE now, told the TC that they should check it out, but be prepared to not like it. Some people like to hear both sides of an issue and some people demand full honesty before they go into an experience. And that's my honest assessment of Vassal. I've been around computers since DOS, and there are other computing struggles that I've had that are far easier than Vassal. I want the TC to be prepared.

I was thinking a computer/mobile game for X-wing based exactly on the tabletop game. Have micro transactions for each expansion or like the op said use proof of purchase code from the actual expansions to unlock them in game. I want to play often but I only know one person who will play, we can't get together more then once a week and vassal turns my bowels to liquid

You're all thinking too small - what we need are android companions to play against!

Look! I'm just saying, we need to have an official online version

I don't think they own electronic rights which means EA would be the ones making it Urgh.

Also, if you ever need help getting on Vassal and figuring things out, I'm more than willing to help out (since I'm sure mu0n is always busy). I've taught a few players and it's always good to get more players on the module (more opponents, more friends!).

I may have to call on you for the same favor one day. I uploaded all the stuff for playing on Vassel, but I am probably the least competent on a computer out of anyone on this forum. Loggers are not very computer savvy. I would love to play online, but after about 30 minutes of frustration with my own ignorance, I gave up having got absolutely no where with it. That was about 2 months ago and I haven't tried again since.
