Interesting x-wing league idea

By Bikeanimal, in X-Wing

Our local club's started a new xwing league - and it sounds like it'll be great fun, in a nutshell;

100pts squad, must consist of only base level generic pilots (your choice-but small ships only). One ship represents you and has to be a next level up generic pilot. No mods/upgrades allowed initially (you earn these with experience points gained from dogfights). Unfortunately I don't know what the experience-gaining table looks like yet as work got in the way of me attending the intro night (boo hiss), if people are interested I'll post it when I go next week...

Any others got something similar going on or got any suggestions themselves...?

I like it!

Hardcore mode: start in a Y or Z...save those points for upgrades or a better ship

Sounds fun! I'd play.

In a couple of weeks my store league will be starting a campaign. At the start of the campaign, each player chooses the faction they'll fight for. There's a map showing several sectors and their points value (1, 2 or 3). On our weekly game nights, you can play one match as part of the campaign. A Rebel player and Imperial player choose one sector to fight over, and then build squads, and play. The winner scores one victory in the contested sector. When a faction has a number of victories in a sector equal to it's point value, that sector is conquered, its point value is added to the faction's campaign score, and the faction may gain some special advantage, such as a cloning facility (which lets you clone unique pilots), shipyard (adds points to your squad total), etc.

The objective is to be the first faction to score a certain number of faction points.

Unique pilots may be permanently killed during play, although there is a chance they can be recovered or captured. Captured pilots can be ransomed or traded (totally at the players' discretion). As the campaign runner and creator, I'm still working out the details but I like the idea of starting out with generic pilots only, and having to conquer sectors containing an academy in order to introduce unique pilots.

Yeah I like it-Xwing really does have so much scope for campaigns. Your idea of differing sectors being worth differing points values and rewarding the owner with differing rewards reminds me of risk (that's no bad thing at all...)

Yeah I reckon you should start in a poorer ship (z/y or tie fighter) and upgrade to a different ship (my suspicion is imp players'll take phantoms & defenders and rebels'll take anything but z/y's...)

Ooh and we get cool call signs? Does your ship have to survive the game to get experience, directly make kills, or just participate?

I haven't seen the experience table yet so I'm not entirely sure but I'd bet you'll get minor points for participating, more for kills (don't know if it'll go into fewer points for damage made) and more for outright victories. I would've thought survival is guaranteed (rescued by friendly forces after the battle?) but would expect either loss of (some) points gained if you are killed or loss of some kind of bonus "survival" experience points...

It'll be intriguing to see how accurate/not my "mystic meg" predictions turn out to be...

Ooh definitely need a call sign! Ummm something cool...? I'll probably need help for that:-/

A friend of mine is trying to do something similar, but his health isnt all that good so it keeps getting postponed as he goes into the hospital every week or so. :( From what he told me you start with a Z, an X, or a Y, and you split the point difference in starting exp for the ship and/or pilot. You can buy things like Ejector Seats to guarantee your pilots survival, and supposedly he has it worked out where you can pretty much buy any EPT, or even any unique pilot ability. And supposedly you can get multiple, which sounds like it can snowball pretty fast. For the Imp drivers you're supposed to be able to take a Former Imperial Pilot talent that lets you pilot Imperial ships in certain missions, as the scenario allows each week.

Sounds interesting! Sorry to hear your mate's health ain't great-it's only when you experience health issues that the importance of good health comes home...

Be interesting to see the details on his experience gaining table when he's back on his feet...

Only rule is you can't choose your callsign, it must be chosen for you... And it's usually better if you hate it. Not everybody can be Maverick or Iceman. Sunshine and Mongo are acceptable though.

Bike...animal?

Bike...animal?

Lol! Yeah! Didn't even think of that....:-/

Not sure how good 2-wheels'd be in space mind... Might lead to "brings knife to a gunfight" type nicknames...

Yeah, from what he told me the scenarios would have a sliding difficulty scale, based on how many players showed up for the mission. I'm super stoked for it!
