STAR WARS REBELS ship screen captures

Chances are the TIE pilot does have oxygen tanks at least. It's just not... Well, totally pressurized and whatnot, or something.

A suit like that can't carry enough oxygen for an operation. At all.

That's why Obi-Wan calls them short range fighters in ANH. Basically every source of canon (I know it's "legends" now) states that they have no oxygen inside, until the appearances in Rebels.

It might be noteworthy that we saw the TIEs in atmospheric operation and the rebels, but not the rebels in space with them.

All this talk of recoiling green/purple/red lasers is utter rubbish.... all I need to know is do they still go PEW PEW in space!

Guys it looks cool for the love of god that is the ONLY reason.

Shush, people are being crazy on the internet and I'm entertained. Don't point out the crazy to the crazy people

No.. PEW PEW.. is not a thing.. it's ... ghastly.. I hate that with all my being, nothing goes pew and as adults, shame for even uttering the words.

Now, on to the Oxygen stuff. Possibly they hook up to a system in the TIE, but I don't see them hooking to anything. While in the military I used an item called an OBA, Oxygen Breathing Apparatus. It was a chemical system that generated O2. It was bigger than the unit used by the TIE pilot, but what says they don't have a similar, more efficient system. that box on the chest might be a similar item. (and my OBA was situated on my chest, so there is a chance this is the item) it would make the need for O2 systems on the ship unnecessary.

This is what I think is going on, and the whole green fuel, might be for the guns .. i.e. Tibana gas.. for the weapons, and not be a solid or liquid fuel for the engines.. just the wings providing the energy for those.

my thoughts..

Atmo?! Seriously? Sorry guys, lift isn't created by sideways wings like TIEs have, nor with neutral cambered wings like X Wings have.... Let's see, A wings, very little discernible wings at all... b wings, how do those stubby things help in 'atmo'.. Not to be crass, but that was kind of a square peg in a round hole. It's fiction, embrace it, don't try to explain it away.

but that's what everyone wants to do.. make it 'Real' so that's what you have to go with.. and, Wings is all we have.

I think everyone forgets these ships have Repulsors in them, they all have them and they.. repulse. Keeping everyone in the air. Wings works because that's how we do it here. As for A, B and even E wings. We have had experimental ships that had little or minute wings. Sure nothing really like a B wing, but I havent seen one fly in atmo yet so.... there's that.

Everyone likes to debate reality with Star Wars, and they really shouldn't. It is "Future Tech" and sci Fi.. that's how it works, because the writer, or director said so. Nothing else needs to be said really.

I'm confused. You said they had wings for atmosphere flying, now you're talking about repulsors... My point being, people pull answers out of the air that make no sense. And it doesn't have though. I don't think twice when TIE fighters scream in the vacuum of space, or that all the ships seem to all be oriented in the same direction (with the planet being 'down') in battles. I don't care because it's a fun pretend story just as fantastical as dragons and fairies. Just like people pick apart shortened TIE wings or that they can't hit the good guys... I think if stormtroopers and Academy Pilots were crack shots, it would make for a very short and boring story :) .

No I get it.. yes I said wings first, because they are obvious, but most Star Wars ships have a repulsor unit to help in landing and take off, and probably atmo flying close to the ground. People need to rationalize things, like you I could care less. I am entertained by the show and let it tell the story. I don't really care how the ships fly, but playing a mechanic in RPGs has given me some reason to look into how the ships work and do their thing.

Honestly, I don't care how the writer figured it out, I just enjoy the way it turns out.

No matter how much any of us rage about this, it's still a kids' show.

This is the one I saw that I objected to.

Note the recoil before the shot?

If it is before the shot, it cannot be recoil. The gunner must have flinched.

Pretty sure I read in one of my books that the real blast is not visible to the eye, and travels a bit ahead of the visible "tail". The tail is the burning gas while the majority of the energy travels at a higher velocity. I'm not sure, was a while since I read it, but I'll check when I get home.

Still doesn't explain why the recoil comes before the shot though, as they both ought to leave the barrel simultaneously. :s

Well as its a plasma weapon not a laser perhaps the recoil has to do with the formation of the magnetic field you'd need to prevent the plasma dissipating before it reaches the target.

I can handle all the details not being prefect in a scifi show, but those Wookies...

Lol... Prefect.

Maybe it's recoil from the previous shot. And again... Who cares, it's a space cartoon where there is a mystical energy, light up swords and an evil galactic empire. We have to pick and choose where we suspend out belief at some point and time :) . I thought the first episode was great!

Ya those Wookies... its like the Empire hijacked the short bus on Kashyyyk.

Anybody recognize those two freighters off hand?

looks like one of these but not sure what that one is either.

Actually I don't have a problem with the ISD look. The one shown in Rebels is at least 5 years older than the ones we're familiar with from the movies. The way I look at it is the newer models have either 1: had a refit or 2: a redesign to the newer look. As an example, let's take a look at a US battleship before and after a refit:

Same ship, different look.

I was *just* about to post the same thing.

The 'command tower' for ships gets updated regularly - the thing is DESIGNED to be easily replace and upgraded over time.

CVN-65 from 1960s:

...same ship, after refit:

Now if only we could make them fly....

C'MON, SCIENCE!

As for laser recoil, they did it b/c it looks cool. If you need to get deeper than that... maybe they fire solid bolts of light or something? Who the hell knows.

That long neck just doesn't look right from the front does it.

Don't get me wrong, I like the show.

But I'm still not happy about the Giraffe -class ISD.

Another thing I'm noticing is the ISD's broadsides. The're also very different from the Devastator/Avenger models in the OT.

Okay, I'll learn to live with it, I guess.... sigh.gif

(Excellent job clipping the .gifs, by the way.)

Honestly, I don't mind the long neck look. It's different, and I think that makes it interesting.

I'm no ISD expert, but it does look like it should have a class name of it's own.

Wow I just noticed it doesn't have the trenches down the sides either, it must be its own class.
