Getting in cover

By Tauntaun, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Hi,

Getting in cover costs one maneuver. But must the cover be engaged? Suppose my character is a few meters from a door (i.e. short but not engaged), and he's currently in open ground. Do you require it to spend 2 maneuvers (1 for approaching the cover, a second one to crouch behind it) or you allow a single maneuver for getting near to the cover and position behind?

Thx!

We didn't.

Unless the cover was "far" away, in other words would we have cared if the PC's token was nudged a bit that way? If no then no, if yes, then he had to move and then take cover.

I let my players (and npcs) take cover as one maneuver if it's within short range.

Note that "Cover" is listed under "Environmental Effects" and not under "Maneuvers". If you end your move behind something that grants Cover, then you have a 1 ranged defense. You don't need to spend another maneuver to "gain" Cover once your movement is over.

That's pretty much how every GM I've played under has run it, typically as they set up their encounters so that folks that want or can benefit from cover can easily do so as a single maneuver. Whether or not the person taking cover is deemed to be "engaged" with said object tends to vary, but personally I don't as the PC is free to simply move away from that cover, either to someplace else within Short Range or further out if they want, where being "engaged" would often mean having to spend a maneuver to disengage from the cover, which is frankly quite silly.

No. If you're running away from someone and you dodge behind a truck and keep running, you'll have cover (and then some) until the person chasing you clears the truck. You could get to Long range or further from the truck and still have cover...

We saw it as "since combat is fluid with movement and time scaling" if you weren't deliberately Maneuvering to be In Cover it's because something else was more important to you.

Of course it tended to work in the Players favor as Minions couldn't Aim and Fire get to stay In Cover.
