OT: Did you enjoy Star Wars Rebels Episode 1?

By any2cards, in X-Wing

They seemed SOMEWHAT competent in the first two,

No, even in a new hope they were worthless. The scene that really drove it home to me was when Ben was killed. A group of Stormtroopers can't even come within 10' of hitting the main characters but Luke, an inexperienced farmboy who has never been in a battle before that day, using the exact same weapon, bullseyes the door control with a single shot.

You mean the moment where the Stormtroopers were "shooting at" the ship containing a homing beacon or the moment they were "shooting at" the group of crew about to board said ship that knew the location of the secret Rebel base and would never intentionally reveal it?

Yeah, strange - can't think of any reason they didn't manage to kill them all on the spot.

I think someone once told me that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on the planet earth.

That may be, but I bet storm trooper incompetence has been mentioned more than both numbers combined...

The first episode wasn't amazing, but it was still decent. I shall be watching them.

It's more galaxies than every grain of sand on every beach on this planet, it's just most have travelled beyond the range of regular telescopes as the universe continues to expand.

In fact if we'd of gotten to this stage 100,000 years later we'd not be able to see any of our neighbouring galaxies because they are still gaining speed.

Recent discovery that some galaxies are exceeding the speed of light has opened whole new areas of science now we know it's not a hard barrier.

So...my statement was correct. :D

Which is the whole point, the crew of the Ghost all have plot armor.

I liked the 1st episode but I just watch the 2nd episode of Rebels and I thought it was better than the premier. The characters are starting to grow on me:)

Hense why only four TIEs attacked the Falcon ;)

Yeah because Dr Who and his companions don't have plot armor at all...

I thought the first episode was fantastic.

I'm 40 years old, my parents took me to see the first film...I don't know how many times in its initial and rereleases, starting when I was three years old. My dad took me out of school to see Return of the Jedi on opening day. I grew up with Star Wars. I read the comics, played with the toys, pumped quarters into the video games, devoured the novels.

Star Wars: Rebels feels more like Star Wars than anything since RotJ. The characters feel like they belong in the universe. They're not just rehashes of other characters -- Hera isn't just a female Han Solo, Ezra isn't just a young Luke -- but they feel right.

They got the humor right ("Haven't you ever seen a hairless Wookiee?" is a million times funnier than stepping in bantha droppings, or C-3PO's stupid puns "Oh, I'm beside myself!"), the action is appropriately heroic-cinematic, and the shock of Agent Kallus and the Stormtroopers seeing a Jedi for the first time in 14 years is wholly appropriate.

I'm extremely happy with it, and can't wait for more.

Clearly you didn't spend any time in 1980's Portugal...

Yeah because Dr Who and his companions don't have plot armor at all...

Dr. Who under Moffat has plot armor; under Davies on the other hand . . . Things were a bit more real. That's why I don't really care for the most recent seasons of Dr. Who; especially the 50th anniversary reveal that pretty much destroyed an entire dimension of the Doctor's character with the reveal that Gallifrey isn't really destroyed.

That being said; have you ever watched the show Primeval? The main character (the one who practically starts the team) gets killed 3 seasons in, after his assistant dies the previous season. Or a Kurosawa film like Seven Samurai or Kagemusha.

I started with the 4th Dr, and they've all had plot armor.

Yes I have. But there's as many characters killed off on American TV as any other. Watch Fallen Skies for example and you'll see a character killed or worse about every other episode.

Or Walking Dead. (look, that person is getting development. They're dead)

Still, Weisman is part of season 1. So while I'm sure no one is going to die in the first season, unscathed is another matter...

This. This is the type of post I love seeing.

Where did you get a hold of this information? I've never seen anything on such a proclamation!

I don't think this is all that peculiar to American entertainment.

I generally don't like shows in which bad guy minions die by the dozens at the flick of a hero's wrist. That does seem to be the case with this show so far, and it's unfortunate. In this day and age, I don't think it is necessary to make for good entertainment, even (or especially) entertainment properly aimed at kids.

I don't have a problem with good vs. evil, just at the notion that people can/should die all that easily as a result of someone else's superior skill. Skills can certainly be superior, but to let it get out of hand creates a bizarre inflation of the idea.

(I hope that made sense.)

I saw a similar headline today. I think it was on Facebook, but I didn't click on it.

It was big news months back, as a result of the discovery nasa has decided to put funds into the long term development of a warp drive.

That's been around forever - the NASA Warp Drive program has been around since 2002 at least, but it's more of a proof of concept program. JSC funds it, but it's only got about 50K - nothing serious.

Back on topic - I totally didn't expect the the ISB agent to boot that stormtrooper off of the Kessel platform in a Disney show ... well played, mouse house, well played.
