Lord Merrick Farrow ignite question

By NuSair, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

  • Ignite: Lord Merick Farrow suffers 1 Heart.png to perform an attack that targets all adjacent figures. Each figure rolls defense dice separately. Merick may not perform this action if suffering the Heart.png would defeat him.
  • Dirty Fighting: Play this card when a monster attacks a hero, after rolling dice. Add 1 Surge.png to the results.

I am a descent noob and still figuring out the interactions between cards and when semantics matter or not.

1- Can you play Dirty Fighting when LMF uses ignite?

2- If so, does it affect all the heroes next to LMF or just one?

My initial reaction was to say no, you cannot play Dirty Fighting on Ignite.

You absolutely can play "Dirty Fighting."

"Ignite" directs you to "perform an attack."

"Dirty Fighting" triggers "when a monster attacks a hero." Even though the attack is targeting multiple heroes, the triggering condition is definitely satisfied. Also, since you're making 1 attack and all figures have to defend against it, if one of the figures targeted is a healer, the entire attack gains pierce 1 (all figure's would face the pierce 1, not just the healer.)

Do keep in mind, however, that "Ignite" says, "figures," not "heroes." If there are monsters adjacent to Merrick, they'll get hit, too.

Zaltyre - this is a good example of exactly what I'm talking about in your glossary thread. While I agree with you 100% - your interpretation is clearly how Descent works, and the right way to play - I can certainly make an argument for the opposite. The card says "When a monster attacks a hero." But that's not what Merick is doing - he's attacking "all adjacent figures". So, the card's conditions haven't been met and it can't be played.

Again, I don't think that's how descent works - but part of the problem with this game's wording - part of what makes a glossary such a hard thing to pin down - is rules problems like this. (And as always if there's something in the rules that makes this clear instead of ambiguous, if I'm wrong, I'm happy to hear it!)

It is definitely true that if there aren't any heroes adjacent to Merrick when he performs "Ignite," he won't be attacking a hero, and "Dirty Fighting" couldn't be played.
