Woodland expansion box size

By Nioreh, in Talisman

The Woodland expansion finally made it to over here (Sweden) and upon first contact the only thing I can think of is.. why on earth have they changed the box size?! :D

Is it just me?

Five Big big boxes and now they change the size to a medium big size box, the straight stacks in my bookshelf are not going to like this..

I never had the energy to enter that super-long thread but okay.

I don't have my small boxes around; is this new size an even multiple of the small ones now or something?

No big discussion there, only mentioned, but I guess here we can discuss it! :)

My friends & I don't mind the box size but are disappointed in the extra fold of the board which allows for a smaller box. The more folds, the more likely it will fall apart sooner.

Yeah.. tell me about it, no big shock that the main board is starting to look a bit worn by now but in a very recent game my city board was the first to be torn. One of the other players obviously didn't really understand how to fold it :(

That, sadly, is the problem with all / most paper products. I was not prepared for the extra fold of the board either. And btw, my main board ended up with a tiny ear, on the back side, actually.

don't know if you guys have access to this, but there is a strong vinyl tape, we call 'book tape' - we use it in libraries, to seal spine labels or some repairs. I used a little bit and it worked great, kept it from tearing more.

Might be good as a pre-emptive way of protecting the board, like the way some folks use the sleeves on their cards.

It's usually made by 3M, or similar. In library land we order it through library product catalogs; Demco, Gaylord are the two I know carry it. Possibly Office Max, or similar carry it. These are all on-line, of course. "Book Tape" comes in 3 inch and 1 inch widths. Probably better to work with the smaller width, because it is semi-exacting to lay it on right, watch for ripples and bubbles as you lay it on.

~ sorry, off topic, sort of.

If I have to address the small box issue, I'd say it has more to do with saving costs/increasing profits. Bigger box means more paper/board and also more shipping costs.

The extra fold on the Woodland board is obviously not very nice, as it requires the corner board to be pressed down before each game, because it tends to bend upwards a bit after being folded for some time. However, if you store it in a bigger box folded like other Regions, it won't show this problem.

I'm glad they've reduced the box size for Talisman expansions. I remember well the first reactions to the Dungeon Expansion in 2009: the box looked big and empty when opened, especially if you were used to the rich FFG expansions of games like Descent 1st Edition or Arkham Horror. The current box has a good size for the components, even though it's still a bit empty if compared to Descent 2nd edition small expansions that use the same box.

However, I'm also happy that we received 5 REAL big boxes so far, 3 of which I used to store the game and all of its expansions, and still have room for more. If we had this kind of box from the beginning, I would have stored the game into all 5 boxes, thus making it annoying to bring around.

I've thought about using some kind of tape too.. maybe one day when there's really no other option but until then I'm rather unwilling to put tape on the board, even on the backside.

A wee bit cheaper or not, I still would've preferred the change to have come after the 4/4 corners.

I completely agree Nioreh with every point you just stated. In the end I may use tape as well, but not now.

I must admit that I was a tad annoyed with the new box size.I'd prefer it is all the board expansions were uniform, it looks better on my shelves.

I'm not as bothered about the additonal fold, luckily my Talisman boards are all in very good condition as I keep them in all the plastic bags the boards and cards are packaged in. I'm sure at some point they will start showing signs of wear though.

the OCD freak in me wants to throw my hands in the air and cry! "why FF have you forsaken me!!!"

I too would have much preferred FF keeping to the same size design, or perhaps if all expansion boxes were this size I would in fact prefer the newer size. That being said I was also upset to see the Board having yet another fold in it. I am going to purchase myself a big carrying case for all of my Talisman set to keep them safe and all together. Is there anywhere online that as paying customers we could get access to PDF documents of the board in case we tear any part of it and would like to print a replacement section? :)

...

Exactly! :D

(I seriously doubt you will ever get a pdf, releasing a pdf would enable people to just print the game on their own..)

I was surprised by the box size but muh, given that i really don't use all the boxes and the shelf is looking tight anyways :) . Im just happy its out and we can add it to all the other expansions.

I'm not bothered either. All my Talisman copies are stored in purpose designed storage boxes.

We're going to try Woodland tonight. I didn't think I would be able to get my hands on a copy before the weekend but then my local store told me they had two copies with damaged boxes in store for me 25% off. I store my game together in a special case so it was quite a jackpot. Bought one for me and one for a friend.

Nice, smaller box or not I think it's a great expansion!

If all the corner expansions had been in a Woodland-sized box, I wouldn't have minded a bit. As it is, my OCD is freaking out a bit, also.
