Walk softly and carry a big Horton Salm

By Babaganoosh, in X-Wing

I have to say that if you find ways to make ordenance work, it is quite powerful. Concussion Missiles on Darth Vader have netted me many kills. I've always tried to think of a way to work in Proton Torpedoes. I think it works with Horton. I've found 2 torps or missiles at the same target in the same turn can kill almost anything, excpet a large ship. It's such a devestating alpha strike.

How often does he get to re-roll his Ion at range 2? I could see firing for someone at Range 2 just for the bonus instead of someone closer.

It can hard to control range unless you give him an Engine Upgrade, but with that and an Ion Turret you're already at 34 points, so its debatable as to whether its worth it or not (I think so but I understand why people don't).

And yes, its generally preferable to take the range 2 shot unless the target at range 1 really needs to die.

I think I'd rather take R7-T1 than an engine upgrade. I use it on Dutch and usually find myself in someone's firing arc. Might be different if he hangs back, though.

I find R7-T1's limitations too great for Horton and he doesn't generally care about target locks except for firing ordnance.

I generally upgrade Horton very differently than I do Dutch... I'll even field Horton without a turret if he's got torps, I won't field Dutch or the generics without a turret.

PTL is a waste of points on the immortal Salm Horton

He's always a beast the way I run him:

Ion Turret, BTL, R2 Astro, and if you want or have points just add one Ion Torpedoes

Wow....good threadomancy (the dark art of bringing dead threads back to life) to pull out a discussion of Horton before BTL.

Hmm....you are right, though. His ability would work pretty well with the BTL title. If only there was a turret that let you fire at R3.

Ha! Yes this is an oldie but goodie. Something I've been playing Salm with is:

Horton Salm (25)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)
Bomb Loadout (0)
R2-D6 (1)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Proton Bombs (5)
Total: 37

PS10, so sure, crowd around Horton before he moves. Then he's going to drop a bomb on you, K-Turn, and continue to light you up if you are still alive. Killed a Starviper and Z-95 one night like this.

Give Horton and named Y wings a EPT for fsake.

Scum Y names have EPT, just not rebels.

DUMB and poor game design. No, wasting a droid slot and spending more points to get an ept is STUPID.

I wasn't around for the original Horton EPT discussion, but giving the scum an EPT and not the rebels is unfortunate. May there will be an Aces pack that helps.

It was actually good that Kavil got an elite talent... what's unfortunate is the "no take backsies" mindset that is built into the way the game is sold. Horton and Kavil both deserve that slot.

I think with an ept on a rebel y there is a possibility of abuse with some of the astromechs, draw their fire and r2d2 could cause trouble from a balance standpoint for instance. Someone more creative than me can definitely figure it out

Draw Their Fire only triggers on crits, the Y-wing has only one more shield than an X-wing and the same as an E-wing, and you're shackling whichever ship you're protecting to R1 of it. If it isn't broken on Luke I doubt it's broken on Horton.

Horton might might DESERVE an Elite Pilot upgrade option but he's TOO GOOD for it!
Salm is a by the books officer and trainer.

Stick to grinding down opponents with BTL and ION, slowly and surely is the Y-wings way,

all these fancy droids and upgrades just bog down Salm's amazing consistency for hitting people at Range 2 for an effective point cost!

Plus you can't use the same action twice in a turn with Push the Limit so you're limited to Locking and Focusing or Focusing and Locking.
You can't re-roll more than once either so you can't re-roll ANY dice after Salm get's his bonus, so as long as you have focus you're fine.
Only when you can't focus at ALL would a lock be better if you roll ALL FOCUS results but wasting a round of shooting shouldn't set you back with Salm as he's usually able to control and outlast even the best opponents.
"Colonel Salm is no fool!"
