Kyle Katarn (crew) and Wingman

By cody campbell, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Had an interesting interaction come up today. Kyle Katarn reads:

"When you remove a stress token from your ship, you may assign a focus token to your ship."

Wingman reads:

"At the start of the combat phase, remove 1 stress token from another friendly ship at Range 1"

Now, FFG usually defines "You" as the pilot/crew member on the card. Technically, if Kyle was on a ship that was stressed, and a friendly ship with Wingman removed the stress, it was not Kyle that removed it. So then Kyle's ability wouldn't take effect, right?

Or am I reading into this too heavily?

Or am I reading into this too heavily?

Yes :)

Now, FFG usually defines "You" as the pilot/crew member on the card.

In this case You means you the player. As I understand it, Kyle will work anytime a stress is removed from a ship, regardless of who removed it.

Rulebook page 19:

Many card abilities use the word “you” to specifically reference that Ship card.

According to the above Kyle (crew) means:

When you (the ship card) remove a stress token from your (the ship card's) ship, you (the ship card) may assign a focus token to your (the ship card's) ship.

Of course the ship card never removes a stress token. It's always the player who does that. Therefore RAW Kyle (crew) does not work at all. OTOH Kyle (crew) is supposed to work. Which means the second word from his ability (you) is not to be interpreted in the above way. It does not reference the ship card. Which is in direct contradiction of the rulebook.

Long story short: I think the combination of wingman and Kyle (crew) works.

As you say, you are overreading it.

'Wingman' only states which ships can remove stress, then, [you = the chosen ship] removes the stress token.

In other words... The 'wingman' ship is not the one that removes the stress per se. You are reading it as if the 'wingman ship' physically fled by the target, and removed the stress token with the tip of its wing.

'Wingman' works more as a granted ability, which would grant to other ships at range 1 the ability to remove a stress token [by themselves]. Note how the 'Wingman' card doesn't use the word 'You'.

:) And it doesn't have the word may either, so it is mandatory. Sorry Keyan!

Sorry Keyan!

Good point, it doesn't say may so you have to remove a stress, and if Keyan is the only ship in range with stress it would have to be from him.

Of course the ship card never removes a stress token. It's always the player who does that. Therefore RAW Kyle (crew) does not work at all.

Gorram it, FFG, hire a rules expert already!

Jan Ors - Push the Limit - Ion Cannon Turret - Kyle Katarn - Engine Upgrade

Han Solo - Wingman - Assault Missiles - Gunner - Mercenary Copilot

Jan moves and boosts/TL, gets stress. Han Solo moves, takes TL, removes stress from Jan who gets a focus.

Jan can shoot with TL and focus.

Han shoots, Jan stresses to give Han another die. Han uses special to reroll if needed, also has TL.

Next round Jan moves green, removes the stress and gets a focus. Then takes a boost and TL/focus, gets stress. Han moves and takes action, removes stress from Jan who gets a second focus. Han can shoot with an extra die each round, Jan can focus shoot and focus evade every round, in addition to both boost and TL.

I need to try this.
