Back from the Dead - I - Any chance for the overlord to win?

By Funkfried, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Good evening,

in our current campaign (Labyrinth of Ruin) I'm the playing the overlord using the Basic 2 deck. Is there any reliable way to win the first scene of this mission (Back form the dead)?

Short recap of the mission:

  • Small map
  • 3 Areas (Graveyard, Hut, Bridge)
  • Doors separating each area
  • Doors can be reinforced using a brown defense dice
  • Goblin Shamans (on the bridge) and Zombies (on the graveyard) with full reinforcements on the start of each turn
  • Heros start on the graveyard
  • Victory heroes: Kill as many shamans as heroes, in my case 4
  • Victory overlord: At the begin of your turn have more monster on the hut than heroes

I really don't get how there is a real chance for the overlord to win. Zombies and Shamans only have three HP and to win the need to survive a turn on the hut and still be in the majority on the next turn.

Help appreciated.

Encounter 1 really doesn't matter. Encounter 2 is slanted toward the OL pretty well. We recently destroyed our OL on encounter 1, toward the end he just hid Ariad behind some overgrowth with an arachyura blocking the way. We could just sit and watch as Hulldyr moved off- our attacks didn't get to her nearly fast enough. Use encounter 1 to hoard cards, and try to keep the heroes from searching.

First of thanks for your reply. I know that the resulting bonus for winning is marginal at best, but still I don't want to lose ;-) and at least give my heroes a sturdy challenge.

Which marker is the way to go in scene 2?

Take the short route. Give him 2 MP a turn as often as you can. You can keep Ariad near the exit so she doesn't take damage. If the heroes charge at her, just take her down the side Overgrowth path near the search token- use the overgrowth (and other monsters) to keep the heroes from getting too close. She can basically run circles around the heroes if you do this correctly- but don't make the move until they press you- until then, harass, and keep moving Hulldyr.

I will try that, thank you.

I agree with Zaltyre on all points. One other thing I would state (and I only mention this because I don't know your overall experience with the game), but get used to the fact that there are going to be encounters and possibly entire quests where your chances (as OL) of winning are small.

When I face those instances, I simply try to make it as painful as possible for the heroes to search, and get gold. Limiting their gold as much as possible is always a winning tactic in the long run.

In addition, as there are quests/encounters where your chances of winning as OL are small, there are also cases where it is the same for the heroes.

I know that, nether less I'm still motivated to give my heroes a run for their money ;-)

Absolutely. Don't concede anything to those miserable heroes. :P

They act as if it is their gold ... their relics ...

Bah humbug I say !!! :D

As expected I lost the first scene but only allowed for two search cards to be taken by the heroes. 2nd scene was literally a walk in the park. This mission isn't' one of the balanced ones. No chance for the heroes. Constantly under the influence of curse. Any suggestions which intermezzo I should take?

Overlord won Fortune and Glory against us, though he got VERY lucky. I can't speak to the other.

I am going to dissect the mission description and build my own solution, like I always do :)
