Indy Gencon

By Dobbler, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Has anyone heard anything about Gencon? Kennon called me the other day and I hadn't realized we are just over two months away.

I realize we don't have much of an OP program, so does that mean World Championships have disappeared? One of the main things that drew me to Gencon was the fact that I could play in tournaments nonstop for four days.

Well, the following events are listed in the GenCon Events book:

*8/13, 4pm: Legacy Joust Championship
*8/14, 11am: LCG Melee Championship
*8/14, 6pm: Core Set Showdown (presumably Joust, primarily for new players - build a deck from just the cards in 1 Core Set)
*8/14, 7pm: Legacy Draft
*8/15, 1pm: LCG Joust Championship

So yeah, there are events over 3 days, 3 of them are "Championship" level, and presumably, the "World Champion" to take Tzumainn's crown will be named from the combination of the two LCG events.

The bigger question is probably whether or not this is on people's radar. As you yourself said, you hadn't realized it was about 2 months away. Without a "Regionals" season or a particularly active OP, there hasn't been much talk about GenCon or the championships. The game has become amazingly grass roots and locally based.

Who's making the trip? How many people are looking forward to playing for the championship?

Well I'm in. Probably my best chance ever to win the thing, since no one else is going to be around....

I thought I was going to be able to go but I'll be in Arizona for work and right in the middle of my move from CA to TX.

**** I can't tell you how upset I am. This would have been my first year.

From the sounds of things, our whole playgroup is planning on making the trip (or the five regulars, at any rate). A couple more are possibles. We will be coming with orclrob and ayeblackbart.

No one from NY will be going.

see i thought this was going to be melee...maybe becuase i think making 1 1v1 deck out of 1 core set is yucky yucky yucky...

2 from our group are going, as opposed to 3. Though we are trying to talk one fo the newer guys into it too. We are playing in everything but CS only and legacy draft.

myself and another from DC will be playing

*sigh* And here I was hoping to avoid another 2.5 hour game this year....

Well, it looks like I will be making the trip with Kennon and Jeppedo. I've also talked to my friend Kevin McClure who won the Missouri Regional Joust event last year (not to be confused with Kevin Sechrest, aka Balon) and Kevin might be able to make it.

And Ktom, thank you for listing the events. Do happen to know if the Legacy Championship is considered the Highlander variety?

I'm pretty sure Legacy is ONLY Highlander. There is no other sanctioned way to play with 5K and older cards.

One last thing, this is the first year there isn't a Thursday morning event scheduled, nor a Sunday morning event. I don't play any games other than Thrones, I'd love to see something scheduled for these times.

Stag, I was thinking the same way you are. But Kennon was telling me Saturday night that there is Legacy that allows for up to three copies of a card. So I figured I would try and get a clarification.

All sanctioned Legacy is Highlander, all sets. I'm not sure what Kennon is thinking.

Ok, thanks Ktom, I'm all straightened out now.

Sadly no one from either of our metas is going. We just weren't that excited with the events, plus couldn't really afford it. Looks like there's gonna be plenty of competition this year though. Will Dobbler be the first repeat champ?!

Well, there are still two months until Gencon...That gives you 2 months to change your mind!

haha. True, but if/when Katie gets another job, our first priority is moving into a house for rent, because A. Our apartment is small for having people over all the time B. Our landlord is a huge ass and C. We live in a ghetto.

Yes, but recent history (the past several years), tells us that there is a very good chance you make it at least one day, if not several, even if it is a last minute decision, and even if you said you weren't going to make it. So I guess I should be saying, "See ya there!"

haha. touche! You have me there. And truth be told, I do really want to go, but there's just no way I could talk katie into letting me go. Although, maybe if I could get FFG to let me volunteer and pay for my badge.....

You know.... I bet they would......

And that's odd. I could have sworn I'd seen somewhere that plain old Legacy was an option, but that FFG's events would be Highlander.

You know you loved it... :)

I was already to correct Ktom... I shoulda known better. From the Tourney Rules (available under Support):

Legacy Format
These are the rules that apply specifically to a “Classic” Tournament during the 2008-2009 organized play season.

“Highlander” Deckbuilding
For the 2008-2009 Tournament Season, Legacy format will be sanctioned with “Highlander” deckbuilding rules. This means that no more than 1 copy of
any card, by title, is allowed in a deck constructed for Legacy format play.

The 2009 Legacy GenCon Championships and all other sanctioned Legacy format events will be held in this “Highlander” format.

Authorized Cards
For purposes of the Legacy format, cards from the following sets are allowed, with the exception of the cards on the banned list, below.:

• All AGoT sets are allowed in the Legacy format.

• All promotional cards are allowed in the Legacy format.

Banned Cards
The following cards, even though found in the legal sets, are banned from Legacy format tournament play. All reprinted versions of any banned card are also banned from Legacy format decks.

Westeros Edition
• (R 226) KING’S PEACE
• (U 114) HEADS ON PIKES
• (R 105) COUNTERPLOT
• (U 151) THE THINGS I DO FOR LOVE
A Flight of Dragons
• (R143) OUTMANEUVER
Winter Edition
• (R233) THE GATHERING STORM
A Song of Twilight
• (U71) THE PRINCE’S LOYALIST
A Clash of Arms
• (F43) JAQEN H’GHAR

Anyway, I recommended to someone at the FFG offices that they publish the event schedules for all the CCG/LCGs somewhere on the relevant sites, so hopefully we'll see that up soon. I have no idea who the TO is or who's running the show this year. Ktom? Have you been approached? ARe you allowed to say if you have?

I don't know (in what capacity/for how long) I will be at GenCon this year. I do hope to have a chance to defend my joust title, even on a slightly different tilting field... but that's what's supposed to Prove One's Worth, right? I'll also bring packs for impromptu drafts on my own, should FFG not be doing so.

Off to work, more to converse about later.

LUke

Ugh, yeah, and about 2 hour games... they really test one's mettle. But they're certainly memorable. I"m betting longclaw wished he'd had an assassination event to off Mance when it woulda doomed me out. :)

what would you guys say to an unofficial "standard" tourney at 10:00a on thursday, 8/13? we could even make the entry fee $10-$20 and split the pool between the first two places to make it interesting :-D
