Jake Farrell - Maybe covered in a FAQ, but I'm confused here....

By ptzd444, in X-Wing Rules Questions

The Rules Of Play specifically prohibit a ship from taking two actions of the same type in one turn, or taking an action not listed in a ship's action bar.

Then we have Jake Farrell.

It says on his text that after he receives, or takes, a focus he can perform a free boost or barrel roll action. Except Barrel Roll isn't in his action bar. And if he already boosted (as his action) he can't boost again.

So, to double-check this rule, he can only boost once PER TURN and cannot barrel roll until a card allows him to add barrel roll to his action bar. Is this correct?

You're right about not boosting if you already have - can only take a given action once per turn.

But there's no requirement that an action be on your action bar in order to take that action. Our golden example of this is Expert Handling - it allows a ship to barrel roll, and then gives specific effects for what happens if that ship doesn't have barrel roll on their bar.

You can still only barrel roll once per turn, whether it's on the bar or not, but no problem with Jake taking the roll.

Generally speaking when an ability or upgrade says you can preform X, you can preform X even if you don't have that ability normally.

Expert Handling for example as Buhallin points out.

To be mire precise you can only perforn the actions listed in your action bar, or an action fron an upgrade card with thw title Action: when you execute the Perform action step of the Activation phase.

Abikitues that grant free actions can allow you to perform actions bot listed on your action bar.

But you are still subject to only executing an action obce per turn.

Another thing: on page 20 under "Breaking the Rules" - Some abilities on cards conflict with the general rules. In case of a conflict, card text overrides the general rules.

So most cards, pilot or upgrade, can be exceptions to the normal rules. This is what makes some of those pilots "exceptional" and is also what allows Jake to be able to barrel roll when a regular A-Wing can't. But the one type of action per turn rule is still in effect, as his card says nothing about being able to do it more than once per turn (actually no one's does at this stage). You can use his ability more than once, just not the same action. He can perform a focus action and then free barrel roll, and if Garven gives him a focus, he can then do a free boost. Or vice versa.

If Jake ptl's after an evade and takes focus does the ptl stress block the free action or does it apply after?

It applies after the free action. So he performs the evade action, PtL, performs the free focus action, then gains the stress from PtL.

However, he could use ptl off of the free boost/roll, so he can focus, free boost/roll, then PTL to evade.

It applies after the free action. So he performs the evade action, PtL, performs the free focus action, then gains the stress from PtL.

Going by the ruling Frank gave last time this came up, you actually can do it. The trigger point for Jake's ability is the free focus action, so he can actually jump in at that point before the stress is applied.

I was thinking more of the PtL than Jake's ability, but Dr4co is quite correct. It's all part of nesting the actions and applying the stress at the end. So he performs the evade action, PtL, performs a free focus action, uses his ability to boost/barrel roll, then gains the stress from PtL last.

PERform...not PREform.....

/me goes to cry quietly in the corner of the forum.
