will we see an executor?

By Lbcwanabe, in Star Wars: Armada

I guess in theory it's vaguely possible we might see one around the same size 9or bigger) as the Corvette in X-Wing. I'm not going to hold my breath though.

Problem with ships like that (or any mega unit in most games) is that they either overshadow everything else if made vaguely accurate in regards to power level, or are huge let downs if they are made usable (CR-90 in X-wing again....).

They are overwhelmingly powerful that other capitals would basically be of almost no use. You'd have to bring a super-capital to fight it, and then it comes down to "whose supercap dies first".

I know people will bring up examples from novels etc, but lets be honest: virtually no Executor class (there are 1-2 exceptions, but in general)from the EU or movies have died to anything that would work in a tabletop game.

Executor: Freak ram to the bridge. Not gonna happen here.

Lusankya : "Killed" (ok, it got repaired, but still) by a small fleet fighting it on it's own, backed up by an "Q-ship" swarm fgiring vollies of torpedoes numbering triple figures....repeatedly. Not gonna happpen.

Knight Hammer: Destroyed by jedi shenanigans. Nope.

Terror: Killed from the inside, not going to happen.

Vengeance : Killed by a CR-90 ramming the bridge. Highly unlikely.

Iron Fist: Plot-shotted to death by Han and the Falcon. Probably not an option, since if his ability is "Destroy any ships entire shields with 1 shot" he might be a bit OP.

Reaper : Actually did die in something approaching a fair fight....against another Executor-class. So....yeah.

There may be more, but you see what I mean. They are plot devices, designed to be killed usually by other plot devices.

If you REALLY want a SSD, buy the Lego kit of one. Its not long enough, but with a sliding scale it should be fine. And its huge.

What I find interesting is that the shield sliders on the base of the ships go up to 6, but the ISD only has a value of 4?

The most likely way to see an SSD is in some sort of charity event. FFG recreates the battle of Endor in some meeting hall sized space with a DSII, The Executor, and Endor and then gathers up some store champions, regional champions, and some sci-fi celebrities and you slug the whole thing out.

The whole point would be to raise cash for charity.

If armada sells well enough, they'll make an ssd for an epic version. It'll be scaled way down. That's my guess anyway. Doesn't look like it'll fit in a 300 point game.

Armada epics, here we come!

otherwise no, we'll just have to dream

but seriously, if you're not satisfied with the Imperial SD, then you don't deserve to serve the glorious empire :P

That comment about the shield is the one thing that makes me thing they might have bigger ships in store for us. If ISD only goes to 4..and the dial goes to 6... It's kind of like Nigel going to 11 (except it's 6 and not 11).

And Gawddamnit, you don't waste those 2 numbers!

"The numbers all go to 6..look... right across the board....6....6....6....6"

And you know what else? 666 6 ...that is the mark of the beast....what beast you ask? The executor is a beast, that is for sure.

We are getting an executor. I just used monty python logic to prove it.

I thought shield dial was for engineering redirects where you can bounce shields from one arc to another, but I don't remember if you can exceed the maximum shield value (probably not)

option #2 is that we'll see an upgrade that can increase shield values

Putting the plausibility of fun, game mechanics, balance, game play, affordability aside -

Wouldn't it be about as big as the X-Wing CR90 is?

I think It's doable. Ridiculous. But doable.

Well, on second thought, just how ridiculous would it be to put something like that into a game? ..Coming from a Franchise that has released the same re-mastered movies more times than my cumulative years on this planet?

Malev

well the base Armada table is already as long as X-wing epic...so plausible?

For casual games you can always create a bigger than ISD smaller than SSD ship (make it about a third more powerful than an ISD at double the cost...so you get 1 ship and either its fighters or 1 or 2 small ships...like Raiders or the Gladius).

For the model, the X-Wing Raider should do just fine in regards to relative size.

Beyond that the scaling for an Executor runs into the same problems as trying to fit an ISD (or even a VSD) into X-Wing.

It will be interesting to see if FFG comes out with an Epic variation of Armada...say 1000 points...but then that would be hard to balance into a game limited to a set number of turns. That would literally be an all day beer&pizza kill everything fun day.

I hope the executor is not too large. If it is included you can defiantly count me in.

 you have to buy me dinner first

The table would be a section of the executor. It's HUGE!!

i appreciate the flattery. i can only thank my parents for the genetics!

it may not be too large for arena football....but will be too large for my wallet

i'm not as expensive as you think!

I hope we don't see one. This has been debated endlessly elsewhere, though, so I won't get too much more into it. Suffice it to say that it might be tough to balance.

i guess i can't please everyone!

Game play with the Executor will obviously be different in at least SOME respects due to the clear level of raw military horsepower a Super Star Destroyer would bring to the table. The sheer logistics of the situation will chance typical focus and concerns of players. The Executor; or any SSD is obviously huge, slow and a tremendous killer. Its presence on the game table would all but typically demand some focus on it as compared to the regular focus on a large and powerful ship in a SWA game.

Now, onto the REAL reason why I am posting this. Its an I told you so. About 2 years ago I said I was significantly certain that sooner or later we would have an SSD in the game. I said I had NO doubt it would be a very massive expensive piece that would not necessarily be of interest to all players but would obviously be coveted by enough players that FFG simply never producing it for the game would seem an almost ludicrous by-pass of a real player requested piece and a great cash grab for the company. While some players will quickly point out that even the 24" Executor that is NOW entering the game as FACT is at least 4 or 5 times too short scale wise by conservative estimates, likely more considering some speculative sizing's of a movie SSD. The point is, that those players who want a usable SSD in the game simply do not care. Cut and dried. The game is already excellent and only in relative scale and it works. The Executor is not only going to be a very intriguing game piece from the get go, it will certainly be at least somewhat of a collectors item right off the hop.

FFG in my mind has done a great thing creating the best version of a playable SSD they can in the circumstances. Nobody seriously thought that FFG was going to produce a 10 foot long SSD just so it would be pretty close to scale on an 8" Star Destroyer. 2 Feet can be made to work with just some suspension of disbelief. Its presence on the game table is going to be super impressive even at 2 feet long. Its going to liven up any game play unless FFG has totally botched the introduction of a $200.00 model. Which I doubt. They spent a long time on this it seems. I'm betting its been in the works longer than we might even think, and has probably been game tested to death. FFG I'm certain doesn't want these expensive models gathering dust on shelves because word spreads they are a game annoyance instead of an interesting new twist for players who want an interesting new twist.

At any rate, all those who just couldn't fathom a Star Wars Armada SSD, well you lose. Quite frankly, I found it hard to believe we could have such a game and simply never find a massive SSD sticking its nose in somewhere. I told you so.
