Han's Ability

By Nuke0504, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Can anyone direct me to the source of the clarification of how Han's ability is used? I am having a disagreement on this and I know that you reroll all dice and he thinks that you use the ability as a target lock as in you get to pick and choose what dice to reroll. Thank you.

The card itself says this. Please note the part I bolded.

When attacking, you may reroll all of your dice. If you choose to do so, you must reroll as many of your dice as possible.

There's nothing in the FAQ about this, because Han works just like the card says. Not sure how anyone could read "as many dice as possible" as allowing you to pick and chose.

You must reroll as many dice as is possible. The reason for this is, is if you reroll some dice with a TL, you can't reroll those dice again.

Soooooo... is your question about Han(pilot card), or about your friend and his inability to read?

Han's ability can get somewhat tricky when it's used with a target lock, but the fundamental remains the same. If you choose to use his ability, you reroll as many dice as you can. But remember, you can't reroll any die more than once. So if some have already been rerolled (either from using a target lock or a defender forced reroll) they can't be included. If you've used a target lock and rerolled a single die, you can still use Han's ability and reroll the rest.

Example: Han with gunner and has a target lock. Makes his first attack and rolls {blank} {blank} {focus}, defender rolls his {evades}. Gunner attack and Han rolls again as separate attack. Rolls {blank} {hit} {critical} and chooses to use his target lock to reroll the {blank}. Gets another {blank}. He decides to use Han's ability to reroll, but as one die has been rerolled, the only valid dice left are the {hit} and the {crit} which now must be rerolled. He rolls {blank} {blank} and his opponent laughs smugly.

It can be a double edged sword in some cases, but it's a very handy ability. Unlike a target lock, that you can only use once, Han can choose to reroll his normal attack and a Gunner attack.

Thank you for your responses. The guy is misinterpreting the card. I told him that and he tells me I'm wrong so that is why I was asking for another source so I can point it out to him. Thank you again

You need to explain to him that it's a special ability, not a target lock, and the two are distinctly different.

Snide comments about someone's ability, or lack thereof, to read is entirely inappropriate. There are a multitude of reasons why someone may have a challenge at comprehending the meaning of a rule.

You must be new to the internet. Snide comments are like the internet's bread and butter.

While true, that doesn't mean they're appropriate here. We for the most part avoid belittling people asking questions here, and if OuterRimJob wants to post nothing but snide comments here, then we'll have to start reporting him for it until he either gets the hint, or is removed from the forms.

The rules section is a place for us to debate rules questions or people to ask questions. Regardless of how clear the rules may seem to some, there is no call for snide comments here.

Jeez, what's with all the insults on this forum lately?

Han says to reroll all dice, so he's not really a target lock.

To be fair, when I first got my Falcon (which was about my fourth or fifth ship), I read Han's ability to be more of a "all or nothing" sort of target lock as well. Because it's using a reroll, most newer players seem to equate it with the target lock rules. It was only when I played someone else and they used it twice in a turn (with Gunner), that it fell into place. I said "you can only use a target lock once", and he said "it's not a target lock". About then, I thought "he's right, it's not a target lock, duh!"

So I can see how the confusion slips in.
