XXYY...Z?

By darkflop, in X-Wing

Hey guys!

After experimenting with many fun lists, I think I'll go back to my beloved XXYY build for whatever tournament comes up next.

So far I've been playing the following (100pts):

Luke + R2-F2

Tarn Mison

Gold Squad Pilot + ICT x2

I'm thinking about making it a bit more aggressive by swapping Luke for Wedge or Wes and maybe replacing Tarn with Biggs so that the other X-Wing wouldn't be focus-fired straight away. I guess I need to play with the various options to see how it works and if I like them.

But then a crazy idea popped in my head. What if I went full PS2 and added on a Z-95?

I would get this for 100pts:

Bandit Squad Pilot

Rookie Pilot x2

Gold Squad Pilot + ICT x2

I would be losing the special abilities and shooting last against most builds, but I get an extra ship in exchange, is it worth it?

I haven't tried it on the table yet, obviously I need to, but out of curiosity what do you guys think of such a squad?

That's a lot of ships. I might want to fly a list similar to this one. I have been using too many 3 ship builds.

XYZZY is the magic word :-)

I like to think that any list used well can win in this game.

Your force may have low PS, but it has a lot of shields and hull points and a decent amount of red dice. The ICTs give you some all round shooting as well.

My eldest son uses 3x Blue Sqn, Gold Sqn BT, and a Bandit Sqn. Slow moving but packs a wallop.

Alternativly you could drop the Y-Wings and add in 2 B-Wings.

XXBBZ clocks in at 98pts

I agree that player skill is essential, as is the ability to predict opponent moves, in order to win games. One may have a killer list, but if you don't know how to use it you'll never win. Plus now that I come to think of it, I noticed the winner of France Nationals played a TIE swarm, 4 Obsidians and 4 Academies, can't get more basic and low PS than that!!!

That is an interesting and powerful option, if I had B-Wings in my collection ^_^. I love Y-Wings too much to let them go, plus I've seen so many people thinking they are rubbish that I want to prove them wrong :P Y-Wings FTW!!!

Last night I tried to make a BBYYZ list but failed. Dropping the Z left me with 10 points to spend, so I put it on a blue, upgrading her to istbalm for that dice reroll and gave her push the limit to trigger her ability. With 1 point left I put the R4 droid on one of the ywings to increase the number of attacks required to kill it.

Fail at Rebel swarm. You want one of these 5-6 ship rebel swarms:

XXBBZ

XXXZZZ

BBBBZ

Ps2 means to predator could tear you apart.

My favorite Rebel list will always be

Gold Squadron Pilot w/ ion turret

Gold Squadron Pilot w/ ion turret

Gold Squadron Pilot

Gold Squadron Pilot

Gold Squadron Pilot

I just won my 4th tournament with it on Saturday. Beat a Phantom/mini swarm, a TIE swarm, and a Rebel Swarm. Certainly this build will struggle against certain lists, but overall I love it. Lots of attacks, tons of health, turrets, and board control. If you love Y-wings, I can't recommend it enough!

Take out R2-F2 in the original list and put R7 on Tarn. R2-F2 isn't really that great a droid. The XXYYZ is good list though.

I dunno, the BBYY squad has merits. Lots of health to chew through, and a good amount of board control with the two ion turrets.

I also like the idea of that r4 droid on a y-wing. With only one defense dice, it won't be cancelling a lot of attacks, so the droid will trigger more often, expecially against 3-4 attack ships.

R7 on Tarn is great fun indeed! That would leave me with 1 point available for options (unless I go for initiative at 99pts). In that case what could be best:

- R4-D6 on Luke to keep him alive longer (reduce damage in exchange for stress), although considering Luke's ability I'm not sure if that droid would be activated a lot, but it might just make the difference between Luke surviving that extra round or not...

- Veteran Instincts on Luke to get to PS10

- Swapping Luke for Wedge or Wes (making him the even more obvious #1 target!)

- R4-D6 or R5 on one of the Y-Wings

I've play-tested the XXYYZ list on my own (for now) against a couple of different builds, the results are obviously a bit skewed as I know what my opponent is doing but it seems to be quite strong and allows me to get a feel for it. I'm looking forward to testing against a real opponent :)

R4D6 on a ywing is probably the best use of the droid. 8 health, and they can only chew through a maximum of 2 per shot, and with only 1 agility your not going to be naturally canceling much.

This droid doesnt work well against tie swarms, ion cannons, or z/a wings.

However it is a godsend against han/phantoms/hlc/b-wing super lasers.
