I'm not really experienced in epic play, so I'm asking: What do you chaps think the largest possible fleet size is before the game stops being fun due to downtime/collisions? Does board size matter? Is it more about number of ships, or overall points?
Largest game size before it stops being fun?
I've played 250 points a side epics and it just felt... heavily flawed Rebels had Tantive IV then all the rest of their points on a second player. The Two imperial players had 126 and 124 respectively.
I've had the most fun with the "mini epic" of 150 a side. that was 2v2 75 points a player. (Rebel Transport was featured)
Both games featured 2 side by side boards, and double astroids. So 12 of them total.
Edited by Acheron143The largest games i've played were 300 points (epic) and 200 points( not-as-epic(before the epic ships were relaesed)). Both of those games were very fun, and the size of the fleets didn't hamper the fun-ness. Both were played on three foot by four foot boards. The extra board space helped i think. as the fleets naturaly broke into smaller elements. It is also probably worth noting, that neither of them were played with asteroids, so there was a little bit more freedom ov movement.
edited for spelling and grammar.
100
my group has a blast playing epic at 300, or team epic at 400 (200 per player). The 3X6 does help in that regard.

So do you think the Huge Ships are the problem? If you'd played a 250 point game without the Tantive IV, do you think it it would have been better?
Personally, I just don't like flying Huge ships. They just don't seem to fit well in the game, and if fielding Rebels in a game that size, I'd much rather just fly 150 points of ships.

I played a 150 tantive game today - biggest I'd ever played. It was pretty fun, took about 3 hours. I don't think it's points that slows the game down, but ships. I can see a fleet over 8 ships in size getting pretty slogging.
We've played a 3,000 point game with six people at 500 points each.
It was painfully fun.

How long did it take?
We have been playing "Epic" casual play with 600 pts. per side with 4 players. It is very fun. But the games are much longer. You run out of parameter space on the table for the cards and you get more traffic jams on the board as you increase the number of ships.

Something tells me beers had a lot to do with it.
Lots of beer^^^^ im sure
Played a 2000 point game a side with 4 people (2 to a side), 2 tantives, and 2 transports. It was a larger headache than anything fun

Setup alone took about an hour and a half, then another six hours to get three turns in before calling it quits. We had 3 Tantives and 2 Transports on the table, along with dozens and dozens of ships.

I can't imagine playing that game all the way through. That's just too many ships to deal with at once. That many moves every round, that many shots...it's ridiculous. Not to mention, maneuvering that many in 2D space.
- We did a team epic tournament a while back. 200per player, 400 per side, three hour matches. It was intense. Got really rough in the final round, my partner had to bail as did one of my opponents and we both were making a lot of mistakes. 200-300 sounds like it would be ideal.
200 is the max I would go, any higher and the game simply becomes a drag. I've tried 500 vs 500, and even with some simplifications (eg. group all same type ships together, 1 dial for all of them, all crits are minor explosions), the game was too draggy to be enjoyable.
I just got home from watching Maze Runner. A solidly mediocre movie.
In response to your question I feel like the Tantive IV is a boring ship it manuevers like a pig and once its low on energy and used the tibana gas its all over. I find the game scales poorly past 150 points... The average human being seems to have issues with more than 6 or 7 dials. Most of us play markedly better at 3-4 is most peoples sweet spots. Also at that point range barring terrible dice either way its going to be a 3-5 hour slog.
I think that the Rebel Transport is a ship I can believe in and does make a useful difference in the game if you want to play it. It doesn't chew up the points and at 150 points a side and 4 players everyone has things going back and forth and the turns stay snappy. This size seems to play out in 2 hours. Probably closer to 3. I can't say I was keeping a sharp eye on the time.
I think with Armada on the horizon it'd take a miracle for anyone in my play group to consider playing Epic most days. Some things aren't handled by xwing all that well and Epic play feels not all that epic.
I still feel that 2x75 points a side is fun either in Dogfight or Epic play.
The biggest mistake we made was playing on a 4x6 instead of a 4x8. An ideal game space for 3,000 would probably be 4.5x12 (all measured in feet for European players). Personally, I had fun. It was a headache but the visual aspect of seeing all of your pieces on the board was awesome. You really need to play this as a weekend-long thing with people you're really friendly with, any other situation or circumstance would be unfun and excruciatingly tedious to play.

Just played a 400 vs 400 epic game last night. Four players and each of us had 200 points at our disposal. The Tantive was there as well as a transport.
Game lasted about 3 hours (most time consuming part was list building and setup). The game was played on a 6'x3' area. It actually ended in a rebel victory as the rebels' escorts started a flanking assault on the poorly deployed imperial forces. The imperial forces were picked off one by one and the tantive actually performed very well. However there was a ray of hope as the main imperial force started to pound on the non-reinforced fore section and chewed through the shields and started landing crits.
It was fun! But I do see this as a "casual" evening event with friends and beer/food. Too much sweet stuff will make your tummy ache ![]()
played a 4 player 200 points each once, and a few 2 player 300 points each. From my experience with those I'd say games with more than 600 per side (no matter amount of players) will stop to be fun - I'd rather run 2 or 3 smaller games in the same time then.
Four of us played an 1800 point per side game on Labor Day and had a total blast! We played on a 6'x 6' surface (four mats). Turns averaged about 45 minutes and we played from 2-9. Going to try it again on a Saturday so we can start earlier and actually finish.

Please take pictures. This sounds insane.
Why have so many people on this thread done over 100pt games but so few have done the FFG recommended 300pts?
