Basis of measurement for X-wing movement templates.

By giannileuani, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Does anyone know if there is a directly measureable relationship between ALL of the movement templates? For example: if you'll lay out all 5 of the straight templates and the weapon range next to each other you'd notice that the "2" and "3", "1" and "4", and "5" are the same as weapon range 2. So that's a relationship between the straight guides. But I'm not seeing anything between the 45 degree banks and 90 degree turns.

If there was direct relationship between all the guides, it would mean that X-wing miniatures could be played on a rectangular grid instead of using template guides. But if the guides are deliberately "off" from each other as I'm seeing, this means a continuous grid would have to be used and the movement templates would still be required.

A grid would only work until the first overlap any way...

Or if you xould only deploy at angles divisible by 45.

Of cause there are relations between rhe bank and turn templates. Question is what are tge relations?

I did notice. Mainly because Applied Perspective templates are marked that way. A grid wouldn't work because of banks, mainly. You'd have to have a grid on top of a grid that's 45 degrees offset. Then there's collisions. The whole game would have to be re-worked.

Since we're on the topic of alternate boards, I really want a Clone-wars-era, ground-based game on a hex board. It just works.
(Please, do not go into the whole "prequel sucks" debate, nor derail this into a ground based game thread. I only mentioned it because we're talking about different boards for the game)

The prequels DO suck but the Clone Wars series was outstanding and really got into the tactical grit.

Only issue I see with a CW board game would be...who the hell would want to play as the droids?

I'd play the droids! However, through the whole game I would be issuing orders out loud and replying "Roger, roger."
