[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?

By GM Hooly, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Imagine begging to watch the Star Wars Christmas Special when it first came out. But dad wanted to watch something else in the era of no recording devices and one house TV. Something that would have been awesome to my young self was complete crap when I finally got a chance to see it decades later.

Oh, it was complete crap then too.

Trust me.

You shut your filthy mouth! That thing was the BEST variety show of the 70's.

. . . . actually, second best of the 70's. It didn't have KISS, Paul Lynde and Florence Henderson on the same stage:

and Night Flight

Your (sainted and above reproach) Momma drop you on your head (repeatedly and on purpose) as a child?

EDITTED: Night Flight didn't start until '81.

My baby sitter let me watch the first 10 minutes of the Christmas Special then changed the channel to watch M*A*S*H*

I was so gutted, I took my Kenner action figures, went to bed and cried. She was never allowed to baby sit my sister and I again.

Decades later I watched it, I was so gutted, I took my Kenner action figures, went to bed and cried.

I'll go with refit. Look at some of the WW1 era battleships after they got refitted after Pearl. Drastic change in look.

There is a pic of Kessel in the EotE Core Rulebook, also. Page 359. It looks like a giant asteroid, very different than shown in the show.

That picture is from before Story group and legends rejiggered a lot. This is the new canon.

Kessel has atmosphere generators. Once you have an atmosphere, there's light dispersion and therefore, sky. Daytime Kessel might have looked like this all the time is what I'm saying, despite being a giant space potato.

The Core Rulebook also shows Bespin as orange, so I wouldn't put too much stock in it.

Depends on the time of year and season. I'm sure Kessel has its tourist season too.

It's a Jovian planet. How is this a problem? Also, The Essential Atlas and virtually every other Star Wars reference displays Bespin as an orange or a burn orange.

Kessel was portrayed as a potato shaped planetoid in all other Star Wars media prior to Filoni's childrens' show. The in-universe explanation for its atmosphere was that it lacked the gravity (and probably magnetic field) necessary to maintain it, so atmosphere generators were installed. This made the planetoid habitable below the surface, but long periods of time on the surface were not possible without breathing equipment.

It is grey/white in Empire Strikes Back (seen when Luke is flying there).

Were it orange, then the midday shots would be under an orange sky rather than a blue sky with white clouds.

I think the artist for the original rendition remembered all the memorable stuff – which occurs at sundown/sunrise – and used that memory rather than the actual shot of the planet. Everyone following probably used that as a reference.

My point is that there are other examples of secondary references contradicting what we see onscreen.

Finally got to watch 45 min starting episode, Spark of Rebellion. It was fun. Definite feel for the OT even though it is a cartoon. Some nice nods to A New Hope. I like the brighter animation of the series, though, in comparison to the Clone Wars series. Looking forward to further episodes.

Speaking of the second episode, it's up at the WatchDisneyXD site. I just watched it.....interesting to say the least. We get some backstory on Zeb and Agent Kallus that will make for quite the encounter when they meet again. We also learn the name of Zeb's weapon. It's called a Bowrifle.

I didn't like the brightness, especially when all of the characters appeared to have eyes that glowed.

My stepson also commented that the ISB agent apparently must shave with his helmet on.

Can't watch it there as I am Canadian and that feature is not available to us. I'll wait for the series to kick off on Disney XD station proper. I'm not in a rush.

And the rifles carried by Zeb and Kallus are similar, if not the same. They carry them for different reasons, though. The Bo-Rifle is interesting. And leads to something that I think needs to be addressed officially in the game. Weapons like the bo-rifle , siang lance and Ezra's lightsaber which combine both range and melee elements need some official rules. Not that they need to be complex.

Looks like I need to hit Barnes & Nobel for that book.

Just watched that second episode, felt a lot tighter than the pilot hour. Very excited now to see more. Btw, how do you think those Disruptors they were stealing would be stated up in FFG Star Wars?

i am guessing they are disruptors we have in the game already.

I dont think our current disruptors could do ion damage on a vehicle.

Crit 2 vicious 5 on the roll... Spend multiple advantage on a crit and the minimum level on the crit chart does cover it pretty well.

Well if you were up against an AT-ST you'd still have to roll 21 uncancelled sucesses to get the crit.

Only thing I didnt like were how they drew the Wookies...Other than that, it was nice!

They already have with the Stokhli Spray Stick. It has its normal ranged profile, and then in the weapon description says it can also be used as a melee weapon with given stats.

Right, the show is for kinds, so that part is does good enough. Wookies look really bad in this art style, but so be it.

It´s the F. you EU, that really bothers me. Kessel as a normal planet, tie fighters that are able to stand on their wingpanels, instead of being suspended in normal " docking racks" . Kessel bugs me most, there was no reason to change it. the look it has in the Edge book is great, It screams: this is the place you go to die, it´s dark and evil. Now it was just, some planet.

Then again, even if it is a kidsshow, i want to believe, so to speak. It just pulls too many stupid things to be creditable. And there is no excuse for that, clone wars proved it can be done, the Tron cartoon also proved it ( a show cancelled way to early, it had such potential)

There is one feeling that i have from this, and it´s not a good one. It is making me fear the movies that are coming out, guess i love my EU to much.

Adventure Time Forever!

Were it orange, then the midday shots would be under an orange sky rather than a blue sky with white clouds.

Forgive my possible ignorance of the subject, but isn't the color of a given planet's sky based on the way light refracts in the atmosphere? The color of Bespin itself shouldn't have anything to do with the color of the sky in the Habitable Zone if the gasses in the Habitable Zone are Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, and Nitrogen.

The color of the sky in the middle of an Iraqi desert is no different than the color of the sky in the middle of the Atlantic, given the same time of day, despite the fact that the surface of the planet is of vastly different colors in those two locations.

Also, I went back and re-watched that portion of The Empire Strikes Back. Here's a screenshot of what I believe you're talking about:

BespinESB.jpg

Now, assuming that this planet is Bespin, the planet in the image looks more like white clouds over a brown/tan surface than blue to me. Perhaps that's just how my monitor is displaying it, though.

I think that's what bugs me the most too. I'm not married to the idea of the EU- it certainly has its warts- but the way that Filoni's been treating it has almost been spiteful. It reminds me of the petty arguments between Karen Traviss and other Star Wars authors that they decided to write into the novels, only instead of Karen Traviss' Mandalorian Mary-Sues, we've got Dave Filoni's fan-fic style Mary-Sues. (And now Marty Stus.)

The violent revisionism wouldn't be bad if they either had respect for the old material or the stories were better than what came before, but right now they seem to be failing on both counts.
