[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?

By GM Hooly, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

<sarcasm>Right because it is utterly without historical precedent with someone to be both a skilled shipwright and a tactical genius.</sarcasm>

I don't think that was the point. Not to speak for TBS, but I got really tired of WEG relating everything back to some movie character, even the bit players. In some ways they only shrunk the universe down by doing that. Thankfully the PT expanded the universe again, and TCW pushed that expansion in every episode. There is no need to tie every aspect of the stories to some character on screen.

Perhaps but I don't see how two or three ship designers appearing on screen is tying everything back to movie characters, According to EU/Legends you see two or three characters who design ships in the movies and between them they design ten or twelve EU ship designs and only five of the ship models seen in the movies. (I know Tarkin did some ship designing in canon and I think he did some in the EU/Legends as well but I am not certain.)

Edit: According to Tarkin's Wookieepedia Legends article the Immobilizer 418 class Interdictor cruiser design, and presumably the Vindicator class heavy cruiser design were inspired by starship designs Tarkin had drafted earlier in his career.before the Clone Wars

Just finished watching the Rebels Season 1 bluray bonus features and was interested by this tidbit about The Inquisitor: Filoni referred to him as the "Grand Inquisitor".

If he was the Inquisitorious' finest, what hope is there for the two new Inquisitors for Season 2? Can't wait for October!

I noticed something in the 4 character shorts, in the one for Zeb. He's running away from the Stormtroopers and the soundtrack has a very strong resemblance to the market chase music from Raiders. Check it out:

and

So, watching the rebels blu-ray, it seems that a Mon Calamari named "Quarrie" is the designer of the B-wing.

So, watching the rebels blu-ray, it seems that a Mon Calamari named "Quarrie" is the designer of the B-wing.

As in Ralph McQuarrie...

Kind of an odd name for a Mon Calamari really given they are from the same planet as the Quarrens and I could easily see Quarrie being a derogatory term used for Quarrens.

This is somewhat my problem with the new canon.

I am not exactly happy about the reset but i got to a certain understanding that it had to be done since the old one was too clogged up and a huge mess at times.

But what bothers me more is that our new canon is more or less built for/with a tv show for 6-9 year old kids.

Sorry, but i'm over 30 years old and have been a Star Wars fan since i was 7. And while i do not complain about attracting new people to SW, i am worried about the (intellectual) niveau of our new canon. That it will be too simplified, streamlined and outright childish for the mature audience. And they are the bigger part of the audience. Most of the new books are not rating high in my opinion too since they are rather simple.

No Suncrusher? No Vong? Less Uber-Jedis? Fine with me.

But barley any enemie that can think further than their nose? Thrawn was a bit too strong but needed to keep the Alliance from wining the war in just a weekend it seemed.

Your mileage may vary but i want a bit more mature stuff, and thought-out content.

Edited for spelling mistakes.

(please excuse the trimming to streamline the response)

I hear your complaint on this: The reset has removed a large volume of material intended for [more] mature audiences and what now stands in its place has a much younger target audience.

To a degree, I agree with you on this point, I think Rebels is aimed at a relatively immature audience, and in particular I think Lothal is relatively poorly conceived and Ezra is a f***ing twit. On the other hand, some of the other characters appear to be fleshed out better than I would have expected.

Now, I avoided using the phrase "replaced with" above (and used "what now stands in it's place") for a very good reason, which the latter (new cannon) is not intended to be a replacement for the former (old EU canonical charlie-foxtrot). The latter is simply what we have right now. Really, I'm not sure this could have been avoided. Face it, Disney bought LFL, and they're gonna use the IP to do what they do best: Make a bantha-load of cash of the pre-teen demographic.

However, the current condition has a solution: patience.

Disney, obviously, had a leg up on everyone else that wants to produce SW content, so the first stuff out there is 'kiddy' stuff. However, I have faith that the current canon material will not be representative of the canon we will have in a year, or two, or five.

There's actually some precedent for this in SW's history. A lot of the EU stuff was actually pretty solidly oriented to the pre-teen demographic (Young Jedi books, and whatever that crap was with Whalodons and Tri-occulus). This was a combination of the tone of the last movie (Ewoks are for kids) and the fact that a lot of sci-fi just didn't seem that mature to society in general. As our generation got older, and demand for more mature fare grew, so did the supply (Shadows of the Empire, the Thrawn triology, etc).

No one really noticed this because it was a natural evolution of the SW product line. It's jarring now because of the big reset, but the demand for mature material and it's accompanying canon still exists.

Additionally, Disney's let Marvel make tons of material that's of interest to adults, no reason to expect SW will be different.

tl;dr - Give it time, I'm optimistic that new grown up-stuff is coming.

Edit: Removed the years, as my recollection of the time seems to be pretty borked. It looks like nothing got published between '83 and '91, when the big SW revival started in the first half of the 90s. My point remains.

Anyone wondering if we'll see Wedge in Rebels since according to his canon Wookieepedia page he was recruited for the rebellion by Fulcrum?

As for those fearing Rebels is too kiddy have you seen the cover of the Season one set? The one with Chopper holding either a stormtrooper helmet, possibly including said stormtrooper's severed head inside, as a trophey?

Seems like a reasonable expectation.

You'd think Agent Kallus would put a tracker on one of those and trace them back to where Ezra stores them wouldn't you?

More likely he stole it from Ezra who was adding it to his collection...

You'd think Agent Kallus would put a tracker on one of those and trace them back to where Ezra stores them wouldn't you?

Which the writers can easily explain as Ezra finding and disabling the tracker until the writers decide its hidden carefully in the plot device. :)

Wedge.. Fulcrum.. Where are Pully and Lever?

Perhaps the fulcrum appelation is an iside joke between Ashoka and Wedge?

Now, do I want to go back and read through 47 pages worth of comments?

I think not.

Me neither. I did get my season 1 disc in the mail (thanks, Amazon pre-order!), have devoured and really enjoyed it.

Just sad I have to wait another year for season 2...

Another year? The show starts up in a couple of months! Middle of October, if memory serves.

I think the new season started a few weeks ago, but I think he was talking about having to wait to get the show on discs (mentioned in his post)

Wait - already started? That cant be right!

*scurries off to open another tab*

Ah, I was right. It premieres on October 14th. As for the not on DVD thing - what, you can't keep them on the DVR until you buy the set? That's what I did (well, kinda).

Siege of Lothal (S2E1) premiered June 20. So, it kinda started, but the premiere was more of a teaser.

You really can't DVR them if...

  • You don't live in the US*
  • Don't have cable
  • Don't have a DVR
  • Don't get Disney XD

(*I could be wrong on this one, they may play elsewhere)

Point being, this the show can be kind of a PITA to get access to for a lot of people. It's not like its on broadcast prime time, or available for free online (without piracy, at least AFAIK).

iTunes Canada didn't have season 1 until a couple weeks after the episode aired, so I won't be seeing anything until November :(

I have Disney XD so I will wait for it to appear there.

I came across my first Star Wars Aftermath/Rebels spoiler last night.

I came across my first Star Wars Aftermath/Rebels spoiler last night.

Hmmm not sure I've found a spoiler yet, but Aftermath certainly has a few references to stuff seen in Rebels.

So Season 2 is well underway, and I gotta say I'm really happy with the way things are going. I know a lot of people were worried that after Vader in the premiere that we were going to have a tough time finding a good villain, but The Seventh Sister is pretty great, plus she's voiced by Sarah Michelle Gellar, which is awesome. I think good things are in the future for season 2.

Yeah, the Seventh Sister definitely stands out in terms of the other villains. Vader is obviously Vader, and the Grand Inquisitor was smooth (false) charm, where the 7th Sister (thus far) seems to have an "Yeah, I'm evil but I have fun while doing it!" type of vibe. SMG's voice work certainly helped in that respect, with her semi-flirting with Ezra adding a layer of creepiness.

Curious to see how next episode shakes out, since it's going to be a lighter "breather episode" due to Hondo being more of a comedic character and Azrimorgan not as intimidating a villain as either of the Inquisitors.
