[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?

By GM Hooly, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Huh! I genuinely hadn't noticed that. Is it something added in one of the re-releases?

I do believe it was always that way. Definitely was in the 1995 VHS tapes (last version before Special Editions started popping up).

Interesting. I had no idea so much had been worked out so long ago. I thought it was a later expand the setting sort of thing.

yup always that way.

The Skywalker family tree may have undergone many 11th hour changes, but the stun blast was worked out right away. :)

Ezra's hybrid blaster/lightsaber reminds me of this:

Although this is the SPOILER THREAD and massively indicated as such, I've so far assumed this means things that have already aired, not leaked information and upcoming things from the future future. It's great to have a free space where people who've viewed the episodes can talk about it without having to put everything in spoiler blocks. But some people are starting to post things about who will appear what will happen in episodes that aren't even out yet. That's a level beyond again. There are three levels of spoiler as far as I can see:

Level 1: Spoiler free. No talk about the episode details or anything that isn't common knowledge / would spoil things for those who haven't seen the episodes.

Level 2: Episode Spoilers. Discussion about the episodes we've just watched. E.g. "I loved it when Hera showed up with all the giant mantas to rescue them."

Level 3: Season Spoilers. Things that could spoil episodes not yet aired. E.g. "I've got hold of casting information and Vader is going to make a surprise appearance in the finalé." or "When Hera dies later in the season..." (N.b. I MADE THOSE UP. THEY ARE BOTHS EXAMPLES ONLY.)

I have been assuming we're at Level 2. That this is an ongoing post-episode discussion thread. It's good to have such a thread, imo - the alternative is to have separate threads for each episode and that limits ongoing side-discussions like the ones we have been having. And it clutters the forum. But I'm spoiler-phobic about things I haven't seen, yet. What I've been doing is reading through this thread but if there's a new episode airing I stop looking at this thread until I have watched it. If I'm behind on episodes I stay out until I have caught up. I imagine others have been doing the same.

So I'm posting all this to try and see what works for everyone. We could do per-Episode threads so no-one is at risk of having their fun spoiled: you read it after you've seen the episode. Or we could just make this thread a free for all - but then I'll be nervous of reading through it even though I've seen all aired episodes, as will those like me. Or we could spoiler block the really future stuff - Hera dies / Ezra turns out to be Leia's son / Etc. I like this one - just for the big stuff. We could avoid Season Spoilers altogether but that's not fair on those who don't care about them and this IS the spoiler thread. :)

I hope that makes sense to people. If it's just me, then I'll just stay out of this thread. I'm hoping it works for other people too. One last thing I'll do (or whoever happens to do it), is post a big marker when an episode is starting to be discussed. The episodes air on different dates in different places so this will help people who think they've seen all the episodes so far from blundering into a discussion of ones they haven't. So...

We have started discussing Episode 4 - "Breaking Ranks".

Given that the whole thread had the warning about spoilers and was started before any episodes aired (disney released the pilot to XD online a week or more before the air date in the US), then I don't see a reason to break this into more threads. Everyone was warned prior to opening the thread that there would be spoilers.

I was pretty pleased with this episode - non-stop action through out. This thing hit the ground at a sprint and didn't let up. Also, sweet merciful crap - the Kaiburr crystal is ridiculously explosive!

(Also, I can only assume that's not the same one from Splinter of the Minds Eye. . ..)

The thing is we don't know how big that crystal was to get that large of an explosion. It might have been bigger than the one in the Clone Wars season 6, 4 episode story arc they released a while back. As for where it was going? I think it was headed for a certain moon sized space station currently under construction.

Okay then. I'm out of here. I considered this a kind of post-viewing thread and spoiler warnings because people may not have seen the latest episode. If I'm going to see stuff from episodes that haven't even aired, yet, then I'm gone.

Bye!

Well, another monday, another new episode up on the WatchXD site. My just-after-watching opinion was...pretty good! While there were times where the dialogue seemed too packed with exposition (Sabine just LOVED to mention her fun background with the Empire a bit too much here), she did have a good overall development with Hera. Not to mention I detect continuity seed-planting going on here, hopefully things this episode mentions will come back and fill in the bigger picture.

Overall, while on the surface it kind of felt like filler along the lines of Fighter Flight, with a pair of the Ghost crew breaking off to do their own thing, I think it was composed of better, quality material.

I like the attention given to Sabine and Hera this episode. They've felt a little under utilized so far, it's nice to see them get a chance to shine. I like that Hera makes sure to point out it's *her* ship, and it was interesting to find out about Sabine's former Imperial life. I suppose that explains where she got the training in demolitions and weapons.

I feel like the episode should have been longer, though. I wanted to see more of the abandoned base, and it would have been nice to get a name for those beasts.

Taking the basic concepts of the episode and expanding it into an EotE adventure would be really easy, too. Throwing the players in with some questionably functioning Clone Wars era equipment and a mysterious swarm of monsters sure sounds like a fun time to me!

My my, how time flies. Now we have "Empire Day" up online and....I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this one. Interesting things were introduced and it ended with a chase scene that is just begging to be put in an EotE campaign. However, some of the character bits just didn't hit me right, though it is nice to see Ezra getting some solid background that goes beyond "street-rat/riff raff".

Doesn't help my ambivalence that it was half of a two-parter, hopefully my opinion will solidify after the next episode comes out.

Any other thoughts? Or should we reconsider changing the discussion to pertain only to episodes that have aired? Hard not to notice the downturn in interest here.

Personally I don't really care about spoilers. I only saw Breaking Ranks today, but knowing about things ahead of time didn't spoil anything. It's all in the presentation anyway.

Apparently, those little beasts were called Fyrnock

One screenshot and for some reason they don't seem to use what was shown in the episode. They aren't afraid of the light. It does hurt them. I wonder what they feed on in the months between visitors to the abandoned base.

Some light hurts them so they are at least hesitant to enter most light.

I do like the base as a setting... may have to go there...

I would guess that UV light hurts them, but the artificial lights don't. Sort of an extreme UV allergy.

They seemed to be a non-flying version of the creatures from Pitch Black.

Another strange thing... given how often asteroids pass between the sun and that base, why were they still using that as a drop site for the equipment? You'd think their contact wouldn't want to go there and endanger himself with those creatures there.

I don't think it was a regular drop site. It seemed like a first time use thing, and judging by how their encounter went, it'll be an only time use thing.

The part that bothers me, is how was there air for them to breath?

Don't remember an overall establishing shot showing the actual planet.

I'm going with some kind of local terraforming, or at least gravity gen and mag field. The base had at least two of those big old generators like the one that powered the shield on Hoth, and there was standard gravity at the base even though the gravity of the planetoid itself wasn't strong enough to pull those other rocks to it, suggesting it wasn't that big.

If those gens are able to run by themselves without much maintenance till the fuel runs out that would provide power for a mag shield and gravity generator.

Kinda a weird excuse that leaves a few questions... (why did they leave them there and running? Where did the critters come from? What Spec is Riddick?) If you've got better I'm all ears...

Nice that you put the time in it, I read it.

I was wondering if I am the only one a bit tired of seeing the Empire troops being so useless. It got me to the point of not enjoying the action scenes, because you know that the imperial troops will just fail. Not enjoying in the sense that the action scenes don't rise my adrenaline anymore.

In this particular episode I am referring to the scene where the heroes drive through a blockade with an Imperial troop transporter. The road is blocked by two AT-ST like vehicle, some troopers and a troop transporter vehicle. What the heroes do? They just drive through everything in straight line while all the Imperial forces shoot at them failing to do anything (god is a slow bulky troop transporter vehicle!)... It was the acme of imperial pathetic. I think I have seen the heroes more challenged in movies like Cars or the Little Mermaid.

Latter on, the heroes have an encounter with the Inquisitor, who from his TIE is able to hinder / stop the heroes.

The repetition of this pattern means to me that the directors of the serie are using the formula: heroes vs nemesis plus the Imperial clown. I understand that this series are aimed for kids and things have to be clear for them, the good, the bad and the clown, I just would like to see more mature content developed for Star Wars... wait! I am not talking about star wars porn ;)

The series is written for 8-10 years olds...what exactly were you expecting from a show whose target audience likes this kind of thing?

Go back and watch silverhawks, or thundercats or he-man, or Volron some time. Our old cartoons made far more heinous storytelling crap.

I know. It is precisely what I am saying. It is just that as we grew up with Star Wars (the first movie was released in 1977), I guess it means that there is a public for more mature and elavorate Star Wars plots and contents, this public is the ones that were kids in 1977.

I expected something on par with more modern youth programming than the cheap budget stuff from the 1980s . Batman the Animated Series, Avatar, even something at or above the grade of Transformers: Beast Wars or Clone Wars, really. There have been intelligent shows for 8-10 year-olds that depict physical conflict against challenging odds (without resorting to excessive violence).

It's baffling that a franchise whose core audience has been the preteen/young adult group would now have to be dumbed-down to appeal to the exact same group. I get the impression the production Team for Rebels is shooting for the 7 and under demographic and only that demographic.

My 10 year old son and I just started watching and are all caught up. I wanted for us to have both finished A New Dawn before diving in.

I very much enjoy watching Rebels with my son. Good times.

While I wish that certain things were different, watching through the eyes of a 10 year old is awesome. :)
