[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?

At Celebration Orlando, I believe Filoni said that it’s Rex as far as he’s concerned, but you’re also right that it hasn’t been “officially” (whatever that means) been adopted into canon.

I think officially, in this case, means that it actually is shown on screen that the two characters are the same. Creators talk about things that don't pan out all the time, after all, and Filoni is surely aware of that.

Oh, sure. I just meant in the larger sense. My lack of clarity while trying to post at work when my trainees weren’t watching.

Please tell me you're a doctor doing one of those public viewing surgeries with the gallery of spectators?

That would be epic!

Clearly someone on the production staff is a Patton fan:

Thrawn: more badass by the moment.

I find it less badass and more stupid. We're always shown grunts shooting at ships with handheld weaponry but unless they are the "not actually force sensitive" blind monk Chirrut or someone with a missile tube, their shots do absolutely nothing to a vehicle. Probably the first instance I've seen Thrawn do something that is usually reserved for stormtroopers.

Wrong, Thrawn hit what he shot at.

Plus what else are you going to do? Run around in a panic?

Take a look again at that shot posted. You see that Thrawn is literally at a complete SAFE space. Right between the 6 laser cannons which can not align their focus point so close to the ship. Meaning he is in the safest point he could be and each of his shots hits the cockpit transparisteel. Based on what we have seen in the show, multiple hits on the same spot might actually DO something. Not a big chance, sure, but what else should he do?

Run around in panic and INTO the enemy fire?

And there's the appearance of Strong, Calm Leadership, defiant in the face of the enemy. It may not actually do anything, but it does send a message - and that's a strong thing to keep in your back pocket in The Empire.

Seems like he might have learned from the last debacle where he couldn't control his people.

He has the Flaw "difficult underlings" for sure.

I think it's more that he's bad at inspiring loyalty and trust. he looks at people as pawns, and they're well aware of that.

Nah. He has the flaw "Outsider". It not that his underlings are always difficult, it is that he is so outstanding that he ends up always as an outsider within any organisation. He has the same issue in the Chiss Ascendancy iirc, and he is the odd alien in the empire who made it to Grand Admiral despite being an alien, all envy, prejudice and hate included that comes with that package. He is arrogant on top, meaning he has a hard time to overcome those problems, though admittedly those under his command who he actually leads directly seem usually to get quite inspired by his actions, because he indeed is that good and does treats them fairly ...

And yet even a pistol , however unlikely, has shot down aircraft in REAL life. So I don't fault someone in a CARTOON making the attempt.

When I was a soldier once (and young) we were actually taught techniques for attempting to bring down enemy aircraft with only firearms however unlikely it was.

Well it's never been done in Star Wars as far as I recall, which applies a very loose level of realism and physics.

Mmmmm, @Nytwyng has my deepest respect for going old school!

(also, pretty good issue, too)

Because in the real world there is no such thing as scaled damage. There is always the possibility of getting some lucky shot through to something vital, like the pilot.

During Vietnam, farmers would take potshots at passing jets. They had little chance of actually hitting, and even less of a chance of doing critical damage, but that didn't stop them. Why, because there was always a chance that the pilot might get hit, or some critical electronics punctured.

RPGs have the problem of translating real world physics to something abstract and the writers understand the frustration of dealing with larger amounts of dice or larger numbers, so they "fix" the game by doing scaling for various sized things. This leads to some minor breaks between the game and the "real world" from the simulation.

Other problems that tend to come from trying to create an RPG from a source material like movies is the problem of translating "plot armor" to the game. Watching the Filoni shows, you can see that the NPC vehicles are easily killed/damaged, but the PCs, even when flying the same type of craft, take far more hits and not go down.

Spinning things back to current stuff, how bout them 2 new episodes, eh?

Rukh felt incredibly under-used in the first episode, hoping to see more of him before the series concludes. Loth-wolves are strange and wonderful (also look out for easter eggs on them cave walls). Filoni finally stopped teasing fans about a certain relationship with a certain two characters. Seems that Lothal is being just absolutely destroyed by the Empire bit-by-bit. Hope there's at least some sort of positive outcome for the Rebels crew... Next week's episode should certainly be explosive.

I'd love if the show ends in tragedy or defeat, but I don't feel that's the kind of story they're telling.

It's worth pausing the show during the scene where Ezra describes the cave paintings. There's a little Yoda there!

Hera's goodbye to Kanan mirrors Obi-Wan's to Anakin in Episode 3. I wonder what that means for them.

My foreshadowing, this last episode, will be the last episode that those two are physically together. Kaynan will perish, which will drive Hera to be 100% committed to the cause (as she will have nothing left to look forward to after the war).

I am also getting a sense that the writers are creating something between Ezra and Sebine. They seem to be spending a lot of screen time together. More so than in previous seasons/episodes. I would not be surprised if there turns out to be a second romance.

Well, Ezra had a crush on her from day one. But I’m not sure they haven’t developed past the potential romance stage. I think it was the Celebration panel in which Filoni said that their relationship has increasingly been modeled after the sibling-like back and forth of Tiya Sircar and Taylor Gray.

Not that I’d mind if they ended up together. I’m just not sure the writers see that option on the table anymore.
