Well if memory serves Lieutenant Commander evolved from Lieutenant in command so maybe something similar happened in the Star Wars setting and most of the people talking to him view him as more a Lieutenant then a commander. And the ranking system Phoenix cell uses is odd IMO. Sato is filling the role of a Commodore but referred to as Commander by everyone for example.
Edited by RogueCorona[SPOILERS]: Star Wars: Rebels - Thoughts?
Yeah, generally speaking the Star Wars ranking system doesn't really mesh up with the real-world versions used in most military organizations but most especially that of the US Armed Forces.
Simplest in-setting explanation is that Ezra was "Lieutenant in Command" as others have noted, with the usage of "Commander" towards him being not so much a rank but that he's the one in charge, while any time he's called "Lieutenant" is a reference to his actual rank within the Rebel military hierarchy. So he was considered to be "in command" of the Specters while Kanan was meditating/moping and Hera was attending to Phoenix Squadron matters for that particular mission.
This is like how the captain of a small ship might have a rank below that of Captain.
You might be a LtCmdr in rank, but your position is captain of the ship.
It helps if you just go with it and don’t think about it too much. Otherwise, you might hurt your brain.
Sigh...
Dammit. Can't the good guys ever have a meaningful loss? Ezra has a new lightsaber quick as anything, and even Kanan's blindness isn't much of a 'loss' as it took him all of one (double length) episode to get a workaround.

"Quick as anything" if you go immediately from watching the season 2 finale to the season 3 premiere.
But, for us viewers, it's been 3 months, while it's been 6 for the characters; 6 months in which Kanan has been withdrawn from the group indulging in a pity party, and Ezra's been playing around with the Sith holocron. Ezra's built a saber before, and is flush with self-confidence. So, yeah, he's got a new saber.

The issue is the new crystal, this isn't the prequel era where the jedi takes a trip to Illum, passes some tests and gets a new crystal, nowadays the crystals are very difficult to obtain even for (somewhat) trained jedi.
PS. I guess the rebellion might have a few kyber crystal and they gave Ezra one but i still think that it should be mentioned where he got his new one.
Sigh...

And it may yet be. The premiere's story didn't lend itself to such a moment. Now, tomorrow night, with Maul back? That seems like an opportune place to do so.

By the same token, Luke built a lightsaber between episodes V and VI. No mention of how. But in some of the Legends material, he manufactured his own crystal with tools and instructions he found in Obi-Wan's hut on Tattooine.
"He lives" - I wonder who the He is? Palpatine, Anakin or Kenobi would be the popular choices.
Me, my money is on Kenobi. We're going to see an epic duel showdown on Tatooine here real soon.

Considering the "cryptic" ramblings of Ezra - Twin Suns, way to destroy the Sith, I suspect that Kanan and Ezra will have to stay behind the scenes and help protect Luke and Kenobi.
Also, GM question of the night: how much conflict (if any) for Mind Whammying the Scout Walker pilot to blow his friends away and then kill himself?
For turning the Scout Walker pilot against his friends? Nothing as I dont see a difference between that and slicing them with a lightsaber or shooting them down with blasters.
For forcing the guy to kill himself? probably the 10 points for murder as it seem unnecessary move motivate only by the will of abusing powerful power.
Some powers are dark in nature and automatically gain conflict. Mind control would be one of those in the star wars universe. The jedi themselves said so, the technique is as well a sith technique and something tame as terrify grants automatically conflict already iirc. This one is worse on multiple levels.
Besides, I would hand out for each and every kill conflict. The troopers would have surrendered if the forced the pilot to ask them to but down their weapons and give them a warning shot. Killing them was indeed unnecessary.

There are tens of thousands of crystals floating around from all the dead jedi, not all of them got collected by the empire. Your assumption of how rare those crystals is not shared by FFG either as CotG for example is throwing them around by the dozen. We joke already that we upgrade to composition super-lasers soon as we have enough crystals lying around for a dorsal and ventral turret.
Speaking of kyber-crystals just laying around. Malachor V was full of old crystals.
For better or worse, "the Empire controls the HoloNet" might be an EU/RPG element not fully brought into mouse-canon.
We have pirate holonet options in eote too. The holonet pirate array does fit even something as simple as a Aethersprite. Cost you two hardpoints.
Now the ghost can actually fit it with its 5 hardpoints. Depending if you go with the hangar for the phantom or not … 2 points for a holonet pirate relay, 2 points for the hangar, 1 point for the secondary transponder code which it has. And you are good to go. Those mods fit just fine, there is even upgrade potential on the hangar, they are running the bare bone version of it … if they run one at all, docking clamps might still count for all what we have seen them do with it.

It does serve as a easy way to remove Maul from the Equation.. I feel it is very obvious who Maul saw and I am looking forward what they do with that. I also like the jab Maul had at Sabine about ruling her people. Maybe its just me, but I feel like we will learn more about that in the future. Not necessarily in Rebels, but maybe in a Sabine lead Canon novel or comic.

I don't see Maul removed from the equation fast, but it certainly would be boring to have him study the combined knowledge of the holocrons for days or months and do a second time skip right after they had a 6 month leap already.
We still had not the combined holocrons doing their magic on kanans eyes too … I see Maul getting removed of the equation at the end of this season, while the balance between dark and light becoming the main theme of this season. That and Sabine with her Mandalorian friends, the darksaber, jetpacks and all.

I agree that he won't just be gone immediately, but that they already setup his exit from the show. I have the feeling we will see him in the Episode dealing with the Dark Saber. Also at least one more time of him making an attempt at luring Ezra away from Kanan.
Kanan being able to see in the light of the holocrons maybe the trigger to him getting a version of force sight.

What, for the whole five and one half minutes he ran the place before civil war broke out and everybody got rolled by the Republic/Empire? The body of the previous ruler had barely cooled before Palpatine showed up, beat nines shades of crap out of him and then dragged him off to be his own personal torture toy.

Palpatine had not much time to play with his toy up close and personal, because death watch rescued Maul quickly, lead than Palpatine to Mother Talzin, etc
The whole Maul Arc was never finished in Clone Wars, but it certainly was not over by any means after his capture by Palpatine.

Adding on to that there is the Star Wars: Darth Maul— Son of Dathomir which is Canon and shows that Maul still had control over at the very least some of the Mandalorians. At this point we don't know how much longer after that he still was leading them.

See, I took it to mean that the Sith ruled the Manos from back in the KotOR days. I thought it was a sly continuity nod.

Savage was killed by Palps on Mandalore. If I am remembering correctly. Also Savage would not get maul all Excited and Angry at the same time.

In addition to the Son of Dathomir arc you missed, there's a whole arc (the Siege of Mandalore) that is considered canon but was never completed. Ahsoka finds out Maul is running Mandalore, and despite no longer being a Jedi, she feels it's important enough to contact Obiwan and Anakin, and they send the 501st to help her ally with Bo Katan to drive Maul out.

Huh. The more you know. I don't read comics, so that's interesting information.
